0 Subject: Playlist for a Wedding Reception

Posted by: chode
- [130342413] Tue, Feb 01, 2005, 10:32

In the spirit of the "Best Song Ever" thread, I have been asked to help with the following:

A friend of mine has recently been put in charge of coordinating with a DJ the song playlist at her friend's upcoming wedding reception. My friend isn't sure she wants to give the DJ much (any?) creative license as to the songs he plays, but she herself isn't especially good with song titles/artists, and has subsequently solicited input for the playlist.

I have no other information about the Bride, Groom, what "their song" is, or demographics of the attendees, so it's really a clean palate. Just keep in mind that there's a good chance it will be your typical reception, with all ages present (no explicit lyrics) and the people who funded this shindig will want to participate (some classics, slow dancing, not just a bunch of youthful jams). Here's what I offered up so far:

Slow/Romantic Songs:

More - Bobby Darin
The Way You Look Tonight - Frank Sinatra
At Last - Etta James
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World
When a Man Loves a Woman - Percy Sledge
Could I Have This Dance? - Anne Murray
All My Life - K.C. & JoJo
I'll Be - Edwin McCain

Fun/Dance Songs:

December, 1963 (Oh What a Night) - The Four Seasons
Hold On, I'm Coming - Sam & Dave
Shout - Isley Brothers
Mustang Sally - Wilson Pickett
Let's Get It On - Marvin Gaye
Don't Stop Till You Get Enough - Michael Jackson
Son of a Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield
Laid - James
Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes
September - Earth, Wind & Fire
Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe - Barry White
Superstition - Stevie Wonder
Let Me Clear My Throat - DJ Kool
Hey Ya - Outkast
Can I Get A ... - Jay Z
It Takes Two - Rob Base
You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC
Cecilia - Simon & Garfunkel

Any further input you can provide is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Can I Get A.... - Jay Z? You realize what the 2 words that come after that are right? If you want that song you'll have to find the radio version.

Electric Slide
Macarena (old people still love that tune)

Electric Slide... Nicely done.

But I know at the last two weddings the Macarena was on the banned list, so you might want to check with that one.

Just got married last year, and we banned a lot of the "fun" songs like:

Macarena
Hokey Pokey
Electric Slide

So, you may want to check if they have any "Do Not Play" songs.

My wife couldn't part with the Chicken Dance , so, that was in.

We went with primarily an 80's theme, and here are some of the songs we requested:

Come on Eileen
Take on Me
Take Me Home Tonight
The Safety Dance
Jenny (867-5309)
Centerfold
Beat It

Then we had all the romantic songs:

Eternal Flame
Wind Beneath My Wings
My Girl
Unforgettable
The Titanic Song be Celine Dion
What a Wonderful World

The Bunny Hop.

This reminds me of some of those ole Polish wedding's I've attended over the years. They last for four days, more than one fist fight between famlies, Plenty of Kesslers & Coke, Pabst on Tap and don't forget the the classic three meat buffet with green bean cassarole.

Ah yes. Paradise by the Dashboard Light. Great great song.

So now I'm waiting for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive.
'Cause if I gotta spend another minute with you,
I don't know if I can even survive.
I'll never break my promise or forget my vow
But God only knows what I could do right now.
So now I'm waiting for the end of time
So I can end my time with you.

Perfect for a wedding, I'd say. (I typed that from memory, so there may be some mistakes.)

Okay, so I flubbed it pretty bad, but the gist is there.

So now I'm praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive
Cause if I gotta spend another minute with you
I don't think that I can really survive
I'll never break my promise or forget my vow
But God only knows what I can do right now
I'm praying for the end of time
It's all that I can do
Praying for the end of time, so I can end my time with you

I heard of a wedding once where "Baby Got Back" was played not once, but twice.

I'll leave the relative whose wedding it was

*cough*

sister-in-law on my wife's side

*cough*

out of this.

True story, the bride *cough* sister-in-law *cough* went to the bathroom, the DJ played the song, she was upset that she missed it so she had the DJ play it again.

For the reception line-up and general milling about I'd suggest a killer Jazz mix disc. Theme music from Classic Westerns is also an interesting approach early on, and maybe between speeches.

Also, I believe that you can never go wrong with Van Morrison slow songs (my wife and I danced to Into the Mystic, for example).

I know at my wedding we played Burning Down the House (talking heads) as one of the last songs and the place went nuts. Even my new father in law got down with us on that one.

For weddings I like...
It's Tricky by RunDMC
Twist and Shout by The Beatles
Let's go Crazy, Prince
Always Something there to Remind me-naked eyes?
New Orleans is Sinking-Tragically hip
Some Elvis (jailhouse rock, for eg.)
The Love Cats-Cure
(btw, a really beaufiful Cure slow song is Pictures of You)
Fine Young Cannibals
Shout by Tears for Fears
Shout by Otis Day and the Nights (YO, OTIS)
At least one Ramones song
Song 2, Blur
Bill (I love ya so, I always will) by, ????
Pump it up- Elvis Costello
Vindicated-Dashoard Confessional (from the spidey soundtrack, just cuz i love that tune).
Jumbalaya-Hank Williams
Do The Bearcat, that's the name of this song,
God Only Knows-beach boys
And a couple of Shania tunes.
A couple of cool Reggae tune as well, of course.
Touch of Grey- Grateful Dead

I dunno if you wanna go with Dido's "Thank You," because that might conjure up images of Eminem's "Stan," and I don't know if you want to put the image of a deranged fan drunkenly murdering his pregnant girlfriend and then killing himself into those who attend your wedding... might not be the best mental image...

Danny, Actually anyone who know that Eminem re did the song probably liked him. For people like grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles they hear the song and like it.

You wouldnt believe the amount of calls we got telling us that they loved the Thank You song at the end.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far ... this is great input. Keep it coming!

Farn (Post #2) - yes I know the 'explicit' version of "Can I Get A ...". It's always struck me as a song people like dancing to (if they're into dancing to hip-hop), and obviously she'd have to go with the Radio Edit.

As for this most recent exchange, if you're looking for a 'thank you' song, I'm partial to "Kind and Generous" by Natalie Merchant. Good stuff there.

Wiggs-- I see your point. And I guess those who knew Eminem and the song would just kind of smile and note the irony... or something.

I can definitely see how those of an older generation would dig the Dido, cuz taken out of the context in which Eminem put it in it is a good song.

IMHO, if your friend doesnt trust the DJ sufficiently to let them have some degree of flexibility, she needs to hire a different DJ.

I kind of agree sarge. The best results are often a combination of music provided by the wedding party and music chosen by the DJ. Certainly any songs the wedding party definitely does not want to hear should be relayed in advance to the DJ, if there are any.

For a slow dance.

THERE IS LOVE (Noel Paul Stookey)(of Peter, Paul & Mary)

- Wedding Song -

He is now to be among you at the calling of your hearts.
Rest assured this troubador is acting on His part.
The union of your spirits here has caused Him to remain,
for whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name,
There is love. There is love.

Oh, a man shall leave his mother, and a woman leave her home.
They will travel on to where the two will be as one.
As it was in the beginning, is now until the end,
woman draws her life from man
and gives it back again and there is love.
Oh, there's love.

Well then what's to be the reason for becoming man and wife?
Is it love that brings you here or love that brings you life?
For is loving is the answer then who's the giving for?
Do you believe in something that you've never seen before?
Oh, there's love. There is love.

He is now to be among you at the calling of your hearts.
Rest assured this troubador is acting on His part.
The union of your spirits here has caused Him to remain
for whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name
there is love. Oh, there is love.
