Hey...

Does anyone play Blu-Ray movies on their video game consoles?

If yes, which system do you use, and do you recommend it?

Over Christmas, I got a nice new TV, and am thinking about getting a Blu-Ray player, but thought it might be better just to upgrade my PS2 and get a nice gaming system as well.

Thoughts?

I use Blu-Ray through PS3 and its great. Wii doesn't even have DVD playback, so I assume no Blu-Ray. I don't know about XBox360.

The PS3 is an excellent Blu Ray player but not much of a gaming console. The XBox 360 is a far superior gaming system, but doesn't play Blu Ray. The PS3 should be backward compatable (mine is with everything I've tried in it) with your PS2 stuff, but the PS3 game library is inferior to the 360s.

95% of the time I use my PS3 is for Blu Ray movies. I do my gaming on the 360.

If it were me I'd still buy the PS3 because every now and then you can play a game which you obviously couldn't do with other players.

Blu Ray movies are sweet too. The Dark Knight on Blu Ray is the shiznit.

Why are you saying that the PS3 isn't a good gaming console?

Bluray is only on PS3, or stand alone players. The good thing with the PS3 is it's one of the few fully upgradeable Bluray players out there whenever they release new software versions. Since it also upconverts old DVD's it will also make them look "better" on your HDTV.

If the 360 never existed it probably would be, but with that comparative albatross around its neck the PS3 will always be inferior.

XBox Live vs. PS3 online? Please.

Take a look at some sales figures, the consumers have spoken.

Sony also lost a ton of unique content that they enjoyed in prior generations. IIRC, GTA was Sony only until I think San Andreas? Even then, Sony got San Andreas when it first came out and Microsoft had to wait for it on the old XBox. That competitive advantage is now gone.

Sony still has the Metal Gear games, but c'mon. With the way they're losing their exclusive library I wouldn't be surprised if the next Metal Gear game was on XBox too.

I am pretty sure I would only be playing sports games, and never really online, so that wouldn't be a concern.

PS3 might be my best bet then....

What extra would I need to purchase other than the actual game set itself? HDMI cables?

Also...are the upgrades for the PS3 free? Or is there a charge?

PS3 branded HDMI cables are 30 bucks at target... or you can get cheaper generic at BJ's or Sams Club (or Circuit City with liquidation).

I prefer PS3 to XBox 360 for gaming as well, though I don't play much online. Don't you have to pay for Xbox Live anyway?

Plus XBox still has the Red Ring of Death problems hanging over their head.

The Xbox 360 is subject to a number of technical problems. Since the console's release in 2005, users have reported concerns over its reliability and failure rate.[120][121][122]To aid customers with defective consoles, Microsoft has extended the Xbox 360's manufacturer's warranty to three years for hardware failure problems that generate a "General Hardware Failure" error report. A "General Hardware Failure" is recognized by three quadrants of the ring around the power button flashing red. This error is often known as the "Red Ring of Death".[123] The warranty extension is not granted for any other types of failures that do not generate this specific error code.

PS3 updates periodically, and its all free. So they are constantly improving things.

You should be golden then. PS3 gets all the sports games that I'm aware of.

You'll want an HDMI cable for sure. There should be an optical audio out port as well. I'm 99% sure that's what I use. If you use a surround sound system you'll want the optical audio cable too.

You may or may not want to buy the remote control for the PS3. I don't have it, but I know one exists. I use the regular gaming controller and it works fine once you get the hang of it when navigating a Blu Ray.

I don't know what you mean by this.

When you first set up the PS3 put aside some time for it to download some software updates when you connect it to the internet.

All you need besides what comes out of the box is an HDMI cable. The online stuff is free, if you have cable internet just run an ethernet cable to the back of the PS3 and sign on every once and a while to get the updates. Also when you get a game it's good to go online from inside the game because they usually have updates for it.

I disagree with Boxman. I play call of duty and Madden online frequently for PS3 and find the experience great. Its also a plus that its free. As soon as I opened the box my PS3 was connected to my WiFi.

I'm usually just a sports game person myself but I highly recommend call of duty world at war. The game is awesome and really fun to play online.

Thanks guys....all great info!

I had originally thought about picking up a Blu-Ray, but considering the price, I got to thinking why not a whole new gaming system that would look good on the new TV as well.

I would lean towards PS3...as I have some PS2 games that I could use as well.

Thanks all!

Yeah, PS3 has wireless Wi-Fi built in so you could get online as long as you have a router in your house.

And let me know what games you buy so we can play some Madden or whatever they play up there in Canada! Is there a CFL game? :)

Is there really a stereotype that Canadians are afraid of the dark or was that just a joke on How I Met Your Mother?

haha...

I love it when Barney makes fun of Canada!!! (Even though that was a Marshall burn)

Yeah, if I ever get one of these things (depends on how large my tax refund is) I will let you know!

Not sure where you are buying, but my friend got that warranty plan from Best Buy for 70 bucks, and its much better than just a manufacturer warranty. If ANYTHING happens, you walk in there and they give you a brand new one. Actually they gave him a brand new (better) one, and then because it was cheaper now, they have him 100 bucks store credit too.

He left it on for like a week straight while away and it overheated. I plan to break mine on purpose this summer!! :)

haha....nice!

I just watched The Stinsons episode. It accidently was aired in the UK, and isn't due to air here until March sometime. Very funny. A spoof on old family comedies. You can see it at a lot of the online TV sites.

Oh boy... I hear you can watch Hulu on your PS3 but I haven't checked it out.

One big advantage XBOX 360 does have is the video on demand via Netflix... but I believe PS3 will be adding something like this in the near future. If I were a betting man, I predict Blockbuster offering something similar and siding with PS3 (vs. XBox/Netflix).

It's a legit stereotype. Ask Twarpy he's scared as hell when the power goes out.

yeah the video on demand for Netflix is great. I almost picked up an xbox for this alone, but I ended up getting a Roku player for $100 instead.

By that standard, Wii wins by a mile.

...and inferred that sales figures correlates to the quality of the gaming system.

Are you prepared to say that Wii is the best gaming system out there?

Hey Senator, it's a video game system. Am I prepared? Hang on I'll get my lawyer.
