I know there are few people here from the pacific northwest and i was going to be passing through Seattle and Vancouver and i was wondering if there are any places you would recommend visiting interesting places to eat. if you only had few hours of free time in each city? Also is there anything late night worth doing in either city? thanks for any suggestions.

I can piggyback on this one... per my note in the Diners, Drive-In's thread, I have 2 days in each city at the start of my honeymoon (pre Alaska cruise).

Let me know what I should be doing :)

If you only have several hours in Seattle, go to Pike Place Market. In addition to the original Starbucks, you can see all sort of shops and markets, plus it's right on Puget Sound.

If you have more time, I'm a big fan of Experience Music Project. Especially if you can see a concert there at night.

If you like pool (or even if not), check out Belltown Billiards, especially at night. That's where I met The Rock.

I will definitely be doing Experience Music Project. That sounds fun.

In addition to the market, I'm told dinner in the Space Needle is pretty crazy too. Expensive, but being on honeymoon and all, probably worth it.

True, I did the Space Needle dinner my first month in Seattle, followed by a Pearl Jam concert in Key Arena. Did not suck.

If you get a warm day, Seattle Center (the area at the base of the Space Needle) can be very interesting. In the summer, they have festivals, but it's generally interesting a lot of other times as well.

To be a little clearer i will probably have an afternoon in one city and evening and night in the other on each end of a trip to Whistler. I have been to too all 3 places several times and i feel like i have seen the most common spots, so i guess i was looking for suggestions on what is next or the places/parts that people miss even when they have been there....Places to eat are always bonus. It is so hard to tell what makes a place special with out either living in place or visiting there often.

For me it will be May 5th/6th in Vancouver, 7th/8th in Seattle. Tentatively.

I'd love to go to Whistler! that place looks awesome... but I guess thats going to be its own trip someday.

Depends on what you like. I like beer. Good. Bitter. Hoppy. Strong. Beer.

There are several good breweries in Seattle that will cure what ails you. My favorite that would be close to the Cruise Ship piers would be the Elysian Fields. The food is only okay (though you wouldn't know it based on what they charge), but the beer is very good.

A good bar downtown that has a tasty burger and a good beer selection is Two Bells, on 4th an Bell.

If this is the sort of thing you like and can give you more ideas. Or lunch places. Or whatever.

An the snazzier side, Seattle is obviously known for Fish. Ettas, just north of Pike Place Market, is a really good, higher-end fish place I would recomend. There's also a bunch along the water with better views and decent fish.

We also have great Tai food. Lots of good ones. A place that does both (Asian Fusion) that is also quite good (though some say a bit overrated) is Wild Ginger.

Anyway, I'm not sure which direction either of you want to go, but that's a couple of pubby places and a couple of more ritzy ones.

If you want out of downtown, there are a bunch more options, and nightlife.

I've always been a fan of the alder-smoked salmon at Ivars Salmon House on Lake Union.

The Wild Ginger is a little foo-foo and overpriced in my opinion (but good food), and is typically full of pretty people. I'm pretty sure it's been named the most likely place in Seattle to see a famous person (I've only seen pro athletes).

If it's cloudy or foggy, don't waste your time at the Space Needle. For a honeymoon dinner, it will be special and romantic. But you will likely be disappointed with the food, and if there isn't a view ... it's just another dinner. But catching a nice sunset over the Olympics is a winner.

I agree with both Bili and Tosh, especially regarding the Space Needle diner. If it is cloudy, eat somewhere else. It is really expensive and only average, if that.

Pick up a copy of The Stranger or The Seattle Weekly, both free weekly newspapers you can find all over town. They both have great lists of things going on around town at night. After reading the list of songs you want to play at your wedding, I don't know that I can help you in choosing the appropriate bar/music venue :) The newspapers can help.

The Experience Music Project is cool, it's at the base of the Space Needle. If you want a great view of everything but don't want to pay $16 for the observation deck of the Needle, there is an observation level on the 77th floor of the Bank of America tower, the huge, black one downtown. Much better views, much cheaper.

The Juke Box at the Pacific Inn has a lot of good alternative music. Great dive-bar, but not particularly honey-moonie. Also not downtown.

Anyone got a hotel tip for downtown Seattle? I'm struggling there.

We've got a discounted rate for Fairmont Waterfront in Vancouver, so thats pretty sweet especially with the exchange rate. Looking for something a bit cheaper in Seattle (low 100's per night?) but still be able to walk to Pike's etc.

I was leaning towards Pan-Pacific Seattle I think its called for 160 per night... but this W is pretty nice too and location closer to where I want to be.

Slightly more as well of course..

This is where Guy Fieri went when Diners, Drive-In's and Dives was in the area. Any of these I should go out of my way for? this is more interesting to us than the fancier stuff overall... list of locations

The W is *exactly* where you want to be. Pike Place Market is walkable from pretty much anywhere downtown, but this W is about as nice as it gets.

It has been argued that Seattle is not a good location for Diners, Drive-in's and Dives and I have to agree. The list provided in your link is not really that exceptional. I agree with Beth's Cafe as Seattle's greatest dive, it's really great after 2am. The place is filled with Rockers, Punks, Rockabilly dudes, in short, Seattle's finest. A great place to stumble to after drinking Aussie beer all night next door at the Kangaroo & Kiwi.

Dixie's BBQ is probably the only place worth leaving Seattle proper. It's over on the soulless Eastside, but does serve outstanding BBQ and "The Man" sauce is not to be trifled with.

As for downtown, if you are in town on a weekday, I urge you to go to Salumi, they will serve you the best Italian cured meat sandwich you've ever had. Get there by 11am, the line gets ridiculous.

If you are in town on a weekend morning, if you have never done dim sum you ought to try it. I've only had drinks at The Jade Garden mentioned on your link, I don't know their food. I can't remember the name of the dim sum place I like. I'm sure The Jade Garden would be fine, it's a fun way to eat and even my daughter, who was maybe seven or eight years old the first time I took her, found plenty of things to enjoy.

It does sound like The Jade Garden would be interesting experience... definitely doing Beth's Cafe late night our main night we are there (Thursday May 7th) cause the next night needs to be earlier to get on a cruise early Saturday.

I'm all for the BBQ and some good cured meat at lunch would be fine with me... even if we just split a sandwich to get a taste.

Should get to hit at least 2-3 of these places. Will probably without a car too, so that will impact things.

Trying to figure how to get from airport to the hotel without getting killed by cab fare.

Take the bus 194 from the airport to Downtown. Less than $3 each.

Without a car, I can't imagine getting over lake to Dixie's.

I'm cool with that, my only worry is carrying two weeks of luggage (this is pre-cruise) onto the bus. But it will be like 2 in the afternoon on a Thursday...

I think the Experience Music Project (and Sciene Fiction place) has free admission on the first Thursday of each month 5-8PM... which works perfectly since I am there that day.

Anyone done one of these? is it really free for unlimited access?

I've been looking more into it and it looks like thats the case. Thats cool if its a free night and a concert too.

Now just gotta pick somewhere for dinner that night. And then to hang out after dinner... and then going to Beth's Cafe late night Thursday.

The EMP is great, and concerts there are really great. It's right next to the Space Needle, and while it's definitely a tourist trap, it's worth doing once; I would splurge and do it if I were you.

Who is in concert?

Performances by local band Slow Skate at 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm in Sky Church.

Part indie rock, part avant folk, part dirty lounge, Seattle band Slow Skate is the musical collaboration of Caitlin Sherman and Jason Goessl. Layers of toy piano, vintage keyboards, upright bass, brushed junk drums and swooning guitar lines illustrate a sort of musical noir. Their performances have an intense dynamic range of whispers and yowls with Caitlin's eclectic and earnest songs as a centerpiece. Check out Slow Skate online

2010 version...

My wife and I are heading that way (Vancouver/Seattle/Portland) for about 10 days in the last half of June. I've been to Seattle twice but that was almost 10 years ago. Vancouver and Portland are new to both of us.

We gravitate towards historic sites, nice scenery, restaurants with great food and/or out of the ordinary, and the offbeat in general. She's not a baseball fan so dragging her to an M's game is probably not in the cards (but never say never, right?) Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated and of course, first beer's on me if anyone wants to meet up and we can get together.

Throwing Portland in the mix as well as Voodoo Doughnut is on our itinerary.
