Thanks Guru, for pointing me toward the most addictive game I've seen in awhile. lol
Anyone who remembers the ORIGINAL Sid Meiers Civilization, this game is very similar, except it isnt the computer you're playing against, it's roughly 25,000 other people. Browser based, free to play though if you want to spend ridiculous amounts of RL $$ for in game currency you can. |

combat mechanics as it relates to castle taking:
When you 'lay seige' to someone elses city, assuming you are victorious, you will be able to plunder their resource fields. (or they plunder yours if you are defending.) Each successful attack (seige) reduces your populations loyalty and increase the Public Grievance. As Grievance climbs, population declines. Once Loyalty falls to 15, it no longer falls with ea attack, but now it declines 1 point every 6 minutes *IF*:
Public Grievance + Tax Rate => 100
Once loyalty falls to 5, your city garrison runs out into the battlefield.
Once loyalty falls to zero; the population has left and the attackers can simply enter and take the castle.
So setting the Tax Rate at 50% and leaving it there, can pose some serious risk down the line once you are out of beginners protection.
I generally set mine at 10% while offline, and then 100% when I come back on. Leaving it there, until loyalty has fallen to 60, and then trimming the rate so loyalty climbs back up again, where upon I set taxes at 100% again.

This is about the best thread I've found so far: http://bbs.evony.com/showthread.php?t=5504
Links to lots of info that really helps. For instance, when I built my 2nd city, I was going to focus on resources and soldiers only with that city, but learned that research carries over to all of your cities as long as your academy is raised to the appropriate level for each city.

TB and dpr what are your screen names?
Sarge: I have 1 more day of beginner protection. My prestige is 27K but my ranking is #3442. Looks like I have a long way to go to get to where you and dpr are.
I joined an alliance a few days ago but I have had no contact with them. Am I a sitting duck if I dont find a good alliance? and how do I find a good alliance?
Any projection as to where I should be in terms of defense of my cities?

For what it's worth, lots of the guys in my alliance are fairly worthless, but we are really just trying to get the quest rewards first and then will build around the core group of active folks we have. My alliance is GsUs and I met these guys in game. Our alliance channel is usually pretty active and we shoot the breeze, but yeah we'd get stomped if a bigger alliance wanted to beat on us.

handle in Evony is same as here. :)
I have accts on both servers 4 and 6. I started on 4, which suffers from an extreme amount of downtime, and started one on 6 while waiting for 4 to come back up.
The rankings, as in most games, are really meaningless. What they truly show is one of two things:
1) Who spent the most real money and/or 2) Who managed to use the most exploits
I dont concern myself with them.
As for where your defenses/troop counts need to be at any given stage...it really depends on what surrounds you, what your objectives are, where you are vs where you are going, etc. No firm, concrete numbers that would be universally "true". At least, thats my opinion on it. For ex; I'm aggressive. You're not in an alliance and I'm our of protection? I'm attacking you for the plunder if for no other reason. Maybe even, just for XPs for my Hero(s). Play like that, and yu best have a respectable garrison sitting in your castle, while your plunder forces are out and about.
A 'good' Alliance? Obviously, I like the one I'm in. Bunch of the same guys from our Alliance on server 4. Yes, we are aggressive, we work as a team, we gang up and beat the tar out of others who arent willing/able to do the same. But in all honesty, we try hard NOT to start a war. We attack those with no alliance affiliation and those who have declared war on us or initiated war by attacking one of us. What many dont understand, is attack one of us, and you just attacked ALL of us, and ALL of us...will reply in force. :)
If you want to explore joining an aggressive Alliance out to control the realm (State of Saxony FTR), contact jeepfreak re Shogun2 on server 6.

I went ahead and upgraded my town halls to level 5 and started my attacking today. Started with a NPC level 1 and was able to plunder 100K food, 20K lumber, 20K stone, 20K iron, and 55k gold.
I lost: 51 of 300 workers 48 of 4000 warriors 115 of 900 archers (wish I didnt send any) 0 of 25 transporters
I killed all of the enemy, which wasn't much: 400 traps, 15 warrior, 12 pikemen, 9 swordsmen, and 3 archers.
I wish excerise allowed you to compute in traps because I wasn't sure if I should have sent just warriors first wave and then a different force for a second wave. I scouted them again afterwords and they rebuilt pretty quickly so I switched to a real player target and changed up my strategy. I wasn't sure if gates were open or closed, but he didnt have a lot of troops and only 104 traps.
Troops I lost: 33 of 454 workers 29 of 4456 warriors 1 of 1 pikemen 0 of 50 transporters
I killed all 104 traps and looks like gates were closed because he still has workers, warriors, and pikemen.
I plundered 131079 of each resource and 25244 gold. Then I did follow-up attacks (sending out multiple parties at a time) to plunder the rest of his resources and gold which came out to about 50k more of each resource and 45k more gold.
Still have lots of buildings and stuff to upgrade but so far so good.

I'm with you on that, but whenever I do the math in the rally spot/excercise beforehand it sometimes shows heavy archer loss (not sure if my archery research is equated into that) so i fiddle around with the numbers until I get minimal losses and then send. I've been doing a lot of attacks and having a bit of fun. I think I was cussed at in Italian too. I used babel fish, but it didn't help me understand it (some was filtered).

So I am finally out of the witness protection program. So far I have not been attacked and have launched several successful attacks myself. So far my best plunder is: Food 246K Lumber 101K Stone 119K Iron 125K Gold 24K No troops lost.
My prestige is up to 56K.
Ugg. In post #27 I was asking how I finish quest #5 with a 50K population. The #5 ended up being the number of quest notices I had received. The 50K population was the only quest without the green check mark. It ended up that I had 25-30 finished quests that I had not claimed. Would have been nice to have all that stuff a few days earlier. Also didnt find out about the 5 min free speed ups until yesterday.

Yeah, I just read about the five minute free speed ups and thought that would have been nice to know right away. I still don't have 50K population in any one city (I do total but quest is for one city) but I suppose I could if I focused on upgrading cottages. I'll probably put some more time into the game when I can sit at my comp for a bit. I have had quite a few successful plunders and then a couple dumb blunders.

OK unless the Devs nerf it, there is an easy money/resource farming routine however it isnt available to you early on.
Lvl 1 barbarian villages:
25 ballista + 25 transporters + 1 Hero = 55k gold/lmbr/stone/iron/food with no losses
Lvl 2 village:
35 ballista + 35 transporters + 1 Hero = 65k ea
Villages regen over a 1 hr time period, so a village 30 minutes away from you, allows you to run a constant rotation with the appropriate nr of ballista/transporters and yields full plunder.
As the barb lvl increases, so too does the nr of balista required, though it is not a linear progression.
Ballista are SLOW to build and require a lvl 9 barracks among other prerequisites. ie Metal casting and Archery

Was talking to DPR in game and was thinking we should think about forming a Rotoguru sub alliance. As soon as I find 6 more Rose medals I will be able to create a 3rd city and could locate it in the general area of the other Roto players. Anyone else up for it?

I've gotten pretty close with some of the guys in my current alliance and would hate to bail on them.
Sarge, I saw your posts in that thread at the evony forum. It is a lame loophole that beta testers figured out and people are exploiting. The one thing I hate about games like this is no matter what you do, you will always be behind the top guys. I play cybernations which is a nation building game and have worked myself up near the top after two years of playing, but am still competing against guys who have a year head start. We just had a massive war so i dropped down a bit, but so did some other long time players. Still, I will never be the top guy.
I finally got enough rose medals to make Baronet and even Colonel. Level 1-3 lakes and grasslands seem to be the best places I've found them. Forests as well until a couple days ago. Now I need Lion medals for the next promotion.
I have 30 ballistas (takes 3 hours per barracks to make ten of them, so yes a long time) so maybe will try the level one NPC village when I have about 50 of them just to be safe. My luck, they will change it to not work right before I try.

I went ahead and tried it and beat a level one NPC town with 40 ballista and 40 transports with zero losses. Level 6 archery and level 6 Military tradition. Hero has a 66 attack.
The town is 23 minutes away, so I am guessing that when I am online I can continue to send the same set-up 15 minutes after it gets back. There is a closer level 3 NPC city that I can try when I get more Ballista. How many do you suggest for level 3?

150 ball + 160 trans = lvl 3 barb
Not sure how much "cushion" that provides, but it worked for me. Prolly overkill; but they take so long to build that I didnt want to send 100 and find myself 2 short. :)
200 Ball + 240 trans for lvl 4

all depends on whether or not the other guys Info is higher than yours.
Which reminds me:
keep a garrison of scouts at all times. Think of them as your local 'security patrols'. If you get scouted, your scouts will fight theirs. And if you kill theirs, they get no info outside the battle report.

Only if your gates are open.
I have my gates open and 2100 scouts. You will know for sure if someone scouts you when your gates are open becase there will be a battle of scouts. You might not know who attacked you, but you will know you were scouted.
I scouted a guy and sent 1500 scouts. He had 53 scouts and his gates open so it killed his 53 scouts and I got honor for it. I've found it's a good way to tell if a guys gates are open (if his report shows he has scouts and there is no battle report, gates are closed).

kept inside the city at the rally point. The number, sort of depends on your circumstances. If you're at war, and engaging with 10k, 20k, 30k, 50k+ troops at a time; your garrison needs to be larger than if you're not.

I've been one of those screaming for the nerf, so I'm not gonna say I'm sorry to see it go. And in reality, it hasnt truly gone. Farming a lvl 5+ barb village yields a per centage chance of a Michaelangelo Script a a drop. You MUST have one of these for each building/structure you want to build to lvl 10; so the incentive is clearly still there to hunt them.

Which made some guys insanely strong and they are still insanely strong. I have a dozen level 1-3 NPC cities within 15 miles of me so I am trying to hit them all once a day until I get enough firepower to move up to level 5-6 NPC cities, which there aren't many near me.

I did it twice today and it is the same level as the flat you took over. Took over two level 4 flats and now have two NPC level 4 cities right next to me that I can plunder daily. I'll hold off on a couple others and build some level 5 and 6 when those flats change to those levels.
I also like that it sets up a nice defensive perimeter around my main city. Surrounded by valleys and NPC's.

re 50....your gates can be closed. I have mine closed most of the time, and scouts in garrison still engage enemy scouts. I also have Informatics 10 though, so no one has higher than I do since lvl 10 is the max.
Unfortunately, it looks like the Devs have gone off the deep end with this latest patch. Intended to nerf the fact that 50k archer groups and 3k ballista groups were unstoppable; the Devs have now changed ranged combat. Your ranged element fires when it gets within range, AND THEN ADVANCES! Now I ask, if I can range my opponent and they can not range me...WTF would make me move closer? Rather than figure a RoF (Rate of Fire) formula and a Rate of Advance to create an algorithm for computing battle results, they now (because its much easier) have your ranged elements close into melee combat range. BAD move on their part.

I've created a 5 mile and expanding buffer around my main city with NPC cities. It's almost comical at this point, but it's fun for me to make all these NPC cities so i keep doing it. I not only get a 50% discount, because I make a rally point (speed up option too) and then send back the 250 workers, 5k gold and roughly 4k of every other resource) but then I plunder them and get way more back then I invested. I have seen it change from an instant plunder to having to wait until they build up, but really it's a great investment.

So how about this for a nice plunder? (In Thousands) Food 3,011 Lumber 3,974 Stone 2,936 Iron 3,030 Gold 2,255 15,206
Some guy without an alliance had a couple of cities with minimal protection and went to sleep with his pants down. I took all of that with about 10K in warriors and 5K in archers.
Im really struggling in trying to put together a big army and not show food in the negative. Is the key just to keep plundering to feed the beast?
I had some guy teleport to my area and attack me with 35K warriors and 55K archers. I lost all of my defenses and half my army because I forgot to close the gate but he basically go nothing because I was able to shift everything to the next city. After the 2nd attack I used my truce and he decided to leave.

a large army, sitting still; is a MASSIVE drain. You gotta keep them moving, which means you have to keep plundering.

I dont think there is a difference in food drain on armies moving or sitting. When your armies are moving they take their food requirements with them.

wasnt saying there is. But to build a large army, and not use it; is unsustainable. They'll eat you out of house and home. You HAVE to use it; that means it HAS to move. Since it takes food on the move or eats food sitting still; it HAS to keep plundering.
