Just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem? I called sony and they told me it was going to cost 150$ plus shipping and tax to fix it. I told them what I thought of that. |

I had a similar problem a few months ago. If you look online there are videos of how you can open up the playstation and clean the lense with a Q-TIP. This didnt work for me for me but many reported that it does. I was able to buy a new blue-ray lense for like 75(?) I think of of EBAY and that did solve the problem.
Doing this is a risk though as if you mess up when opening the thing up, or what you do doesnt solve the problem, you have voided your warranty which I believe means that even that $150 deal is no more.

I opened it up and cleaned it, didn't work either. The disk doesn't spin, was that your case too?

This is not good at all Electro. dpr is right---as a last resort---the "void any warranty" and open it up aspect is all that's usually left.
Often the disc spins but the lense will not read the data. If it doesn't spin, does it just make noise?
Here is one of many decent links with "solutions" off Google----using "PS3 disc not spinning"
Disc won't spin

Yeah, I am gonna have to go on ebay and get a replacement part. I am not giving Sony the money to fix a faulty machine that they know breaks. I told them I was gonna put it in the trash and buy a Wii.

I am pretty sure that my disk was still spinning and it was just a problem with the lense. I remember that I could get to the start menus of my games but once I started to load the system would freeze and then I would have to restart it or something and get error messages saying it couldnt read the disk.
It seems that our problems are different and you will likely have to replace the whole blu-ray drive instead of just the lense. This probably drives the price closer to SONYs but is also a fairly simple process especially if you have already opened it.

Actually I just looked at Mike Ds link briefly so it seems that maybe it is the same problem so could be replaced just by buying the new lense.

What is so frustating about this whole situation is the attitude of Sony, they couldn't give a rats @ss about it, just send them money. It is a common problem, and they won't own up to it. The problem is that it is the best machine, so they know they have that going for them. Just warn friends to buy the extended warranty, you are gonna pay either way.

How common is the problem? I know for me I left the thing on ALL the time so it was at least in part my fault. It is annoying to have to pay when things don't hold up properly though.

It seems to me when there are tutorials on YouTube telling you how to change it... My buddy told be he know others who have had the same problem, and scanning message boards and stuff also.
