i am contemplating moving into a new apartment that is slightly out of my budget. the simply remedy is dropping cable TV.

i rarely watch TV anyway, but there are certain shows i like and record them for when i actually do have time. and i've realized over the last few weeks i rarely watch cable - i mostly just use the DVR.

so, DVRs - can you buy them on their own? if so, are there any brands that are better than others? etc etc

Networks make their latest shows available online for a month or two immediately after they air. Before we had our DVR that's how we caught up on shows we missed.

Of course, you could go to an antiques store and get a device called a "Video Cassette Recorder" that people used before all these fancy-pantsy electro-doodads you young punks like so much these days.

That was back when nickels had bees on them. "Give me five bees for a quarter," you'd say. Anyway, when I bought my first video cassette recorder I had an onion on my belt because that was the style back then. But it was a white onion- because of the war you couldn't get red onions.

What was the question?

Hulu Plus might be worth looking into. I think it has entire seasons of most shows for streaming and is like 8 bucks a month.

So while you wouldn't have regular cable, you could watch various seasons of shows at your leisure.

I'd agree with those suggestions.

If you want to save tons of money just kill your cable all together and get Hulu, Netflix, or an invite to a torrent site that provides all those shows. Then you can just stream them straight to your TV.

Besides the network sites, hulu is a really good option.

For the record... i own a vhs..... and a belt with onions...

As to networks making their shows available, unfortunately, it's not true for all.... such as cbs..

We've watched Survivor the next day from the CBS site. Maybe they don't put ALL their shows out there.

thanks for the input everyone. i am definitely dropping cable.

i already have netflix, and will look into hulu plus.

the primary reason for the DVR is the same reason we all had/have VHS - i want to record stuff when i'm not home, and watch it at a later date.

i just don't want to have to pay for 600 channels i don't watch just for that honor.
