Wiggs, don't know the answer to your question, but I am considering one of these for my wife for christmas. Why did you choose it over the ipad?

Because it has everything I need and it was much cheaper. It was 199 as opposed to about 750.

The fire offers
Movies, Music, Games, web access with wifi, pretty much everything the ipad has, except 3g

IF you have any more questions feel free to ask.
I love the fire.

Amazon has a good comparison page here, which is surely non-biased.

Cool, thanks. Have you used an Ipad? I definitely love the price difference. I just know my wife uses her laptop a lot and fills it up with tons of data, so the space on the fire worries me.
Are all the apps on the Fire pretty much the same as on an android phone? Or are there more?

I had a Kindle 3 and got the Fire as soon as it came out. My wife has an iPad. I love the kindle. The iPad seems heavy and cumbersome when I hold it now. I don't really need 3G, so I'm happy with the wifi.

From what I've seen, you can stream from the fire to the TV with an android app if you have a media server (I don't so I haven't tried it).

The space is limited, that is for sure, but they have a feature called the cloud where you can save things and transfer them on when you want them. For example, you watch a movie, or read a book you put it in the cloud and save it for later.

The apps, I am not totally sure about, everything I have looked for I have found. anything you are interested in let me know and I will look for it.

Renting many good books for free from Amazon is pretty cool.

I guess it's not really the apps, though I did read that the Fire does not have access to the Android Marketplace as I would have thought. My wife multitasks a lot and that is the main concern for me.

I keep reading that the Fire is great for watching movies, reading books, listening to music, but for being a true tablet, it is very lacking, which I know would be a turnoff for my wife. So confused right now, brain hurts.. LOL

The Fire is an e-reader that has some tablet abilities. Unless you can root your Fire, it was initially very simple, you don't have access to the Android market.

The iPad is a tablet that can server as an e-reader. The iPad isn't as nice to read on IMO. The iPad is also heavier, but my 5 year-old doesn't have any problems carrying it and using it.

If you want an e-reader, get a simple Kindle. If you want a tablet get an iPad or a true Android Tablet, like a Galaxy Tab. If you want a little bit of both get the Fire.

I've heard rumors that the iPad is going to get Microsoft Office support. That could be useful, but I can't imagine doing any real work on the iPad. It is great for banging out quick responses to e-mail, but writing a lot would get tedious.
