0 Subject: DVD Zones - Zone Free DVD Player

I wanted to solicit some collective board knowledge.

I like a European band that is very popular overseas and not so well-known in America. They just released a 2-disc DVD anthology of their greatest hits, videos, concert footage, and junk, but it only came out in Europe. So if I order it, it won't play on a Zone 1 DVD player, which are what mostly everyone in America has. It's what I have.

I was searching the web today and discovered a company that sells modified DVD players that can view discs from any of the 8 zones. They take standard DVD players and play with the hardware and then sell them at market prices (the cheapest one was $150--that's a little steep for me). I also found a website that offers an e-mail with instructions on how to use the DVD remote to "de-program" the feature that blocks Zones 2-8. It's $10 and you can pay through PayPal. I am thinking of trying that one, as my potential loss is limited to $10. I honestly believe that it should work, though, assuming the engineers created backdoors to the Zone free performance. This seems likely to me.

So, does anyone have any experience with this matter? Specifically, I'm interested in hearing opinions from anyone who may have purchased DVD Unlocker. Maybe I should take a clue fromt he website, which states, "Almost Banned!!!" That's usually a bad sign, but...

I also have heard people say they purchased a Zone Free DVD player from Best Buy. This seems unlikely, but I checked the website anyway. i didn't find anything that met the description, but I will call my local store to ask.

For anyone not familiar with the Zones and what this is all about, here's a good link talking about regions, but also RCE, which is the newest Hollywood attempt at stopping Zone free activity. Gotta love the entertainment industry.

A lot of the DVD recorders/players that come with computers these days can read all zones or you can download firmware to make the player zone free.

You can then use the mulitude of DVD copying software to remove the zone protection and burn a copy you can play on any DVD.

I have heard a program DVD Genie can be used to remove/change regions on a DVD...but you can only modify the region like 5 times...

there is a chinese company named Apex that sells region-free DVD players, extremely cheaply.

i know circuit city used to carry them, so you might look there.

the reason they are so cheap (i got a 6 disc changer for 99 bucks about 2 years ago) is because they are pretty shoddy in workmanship. you have to treat the player gently, and the remote control only works when aimed EXACTLY at the player.

but it is region free. :o)

Tree, have you ever heard about the "secret" way to unlock the Zone Free capability of normal DVD players, though? I am thinking that my be the easiest way to do it.

I'm not buying any crappy Chinese DVD player. Haha. I may call around to Circuit City and Best Buy and ask them what they have.
