0 Subject: Where to Move II

a couple years back I believe I posed a question about where I should randomly move. I wound up in Jersey near NYC due to a job offer and didn't get to really choose.

Now I am bored with the job and want to start fresh in a new place altogether (out west preferably as I have already lived in the northeast and south - NJ and SC)...

I took some surveys, did some research, talked with some people etc and came up with suburbs of Seattle/Vancouver, maybe Portland, or Vegas and Phoenix as my ideal places to live. (I don't think I would like Cali, and yeah I know San Diego would be perfect but its way too expensive). Blue Hen lived up in the Northwest and mentioned the White Rock suburbs of Vancover as being an good place to look.

So some of the main characteristics I am looking for are... temperate weather (or just warm like a Phoenix/Vegas - I hate the bitter cold and to a lesser extent too hot/high humidity), good companies to work for since I will be needing a job as I am quitting Merrill Lynch - and any company would be fine, I want out of finance (I have also been looking into to becoming a realtor so I guess that could be anywhere frankly)... I would prefer to be in a suburb just outside of the city so I have quiet but the option to go in if I choose. Pro sports teams would be nice... great night life, things to do, hot women! great bars! etc etc..

Also - if I do consider Vancouver, as anyone here moved from the US to Canada and can shed light on what it takes to complete that move and to live and work in Canada? I am worried about how difficult that just may be...

anyway, I have to go to work now where I can't post of course but can read all of this - so if you have any reccomendations of a random town to move to and start a new life... let me know!

thanks everyone! GO

Seattle.

Greatest summer on the continent, thought it doesn't really start until July 4th. Rarely gets below 30 degrees in the winter. You can live in the city limits and still get "quiet" - and avoid traffic.

Plenty of places to work. Perhaps the greatest night life of a city our size, a product of a very liberal, young, urban mindset. Loads of hot babes of every type and one of the most educated group of young people in the country. If you like country music, move to Phoenix.

Vancouver is beautiful, vibrant and even more cosmopolitan than Seattle, but I know nothing about emigrating there.

You are welcome to crash at my place if you want to explore the Emerald City. Cheers.

Seattle is a great city, but be prepared to wear a jacket on July 4th. And don't expect to see too many women wearing short shorts.

I don't know 'bout that. Today seems to be the official opening day to "Sun Dress Season" in Seattle. Everybody is underdressed right now.

I went to Seattle for the Seahawks/Falcons game in early Jan. Stayed in Whiterock, which is just an awesome suburb of Vancouver. Seattle has the best scenery I have ever seen...just beautiful buildings, great waterfront...everything.

Whiterock gives you a 2 hour drive to Seattle, about a half an hour into Vancouver, and about 2 minutes to the beach/ocean.

If you can figure out how to get up here and get a green card, make the trip.

I am thinking I might be best off going to Seattle first because it will just be easier... and then eventually sliding across the border to Canada afterwards once I get a bit more organized in a few years.

I have enough to worry about moving that far and starting over - thinking that adding another country to the mix may be a bit much all at once.

Thanks for comments thus far... keep 'em coming!

now the job hunt begins first of all! and I gotta figure out an ideal place to live. I am thinking a cheap condo or studio apt in the city - any reccomendations as far as living arrangements? Is their mass transit that would enable me to live outside where its perhaps more inexpensive and commute in?

Is there a major college around there where I could look for apts nearby? thats usually a sneaky way to get a deal on a decent apt and is what I did when I moved here. I used Princeton's off campus housing flyers lol... first thing I came across online was Malloy Apts. near University of Washington., Welch Plaza and something called Balfour Place which has a studio apt for 500 which would be just fine.

Whats the deal with no state income tax? That sounds too good to be true - Is that really true and do they bite you back in other area's like sales tax to even it out?

these are things I will start looking up... but its always better to hear from someone who has been there and done it.

Thanks again everyone.

The apartments around UW are generally bad deals - college kids are tough on rentals and you get less for what you are paying for.

I recommend checking out Craig's list.

Or the Seattle P-I website.

I live in Fremont, which isn't far from the UW campus.

If you work downtown, then our bus system is very efficient for a traditional hour job from anywhere in the area. Living in Seattle without a car, I would suggest the U District, (yeah, I know i just advised against it) Capital Hill/Pine-Pike Corriodor, a small part of Ballard, and Belltown.

Drop me an e-mail whenever with whatever questions you might have.

BTW, I saw many, many hotties today wearing next to nothing. It reached 90 degrees, had to be a record.

Find Your Spot might be just what you're looking for, for those out-of-the-way places you'd never have thought of. Or, heck, it's just sorta fun.
