0 Subject: OT: Buying Clubs

Alright, I'm in the market for some clubs. This will be a beginner set for me as I've never owned any clubs. I pretty well suck at golf but I need to take it up for a variety of reasons(entertainment and networking being the 2 main reasons). Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm 6'5 and will probably need to get a custom set. Should I just go to a local golf shop and have them hook me up? Any help is appreciated.

I would suggest finding a place with a driving range or getting some demo clubs and trying them out. I've heard that mid rivers in St. Pters has a shop where you can try the clubs on a driving range. A pro could help you find the right ones.

You might even consider getting some used clubs to begin with as they can get very expensive fast. You'll want to get some decent clubs if your 'networking'.

I'd second the idea of checking out used clubs if there's somewhere nearby that has a decent selection. That said, I bought extended length new clubs (also 6'5") a few years ago because I couldn't find used ones that I liked.

One other thing to consider (maybe more detailed than matters if you're brand new to golf) is grip size - I found "oversized" grips to be more comfortable.

Ditto what BJ said about oversized grips.
First change I always make to a new set / individual club.

Love my Taylor Made Driver with the Oversized grip.

Also agree with what STL said about demoing the clubs and getting a feel.

If your not looking to spend a ton of money i would sugest pinemeadow.com
. They do knock offs at a very reasonable price. Also give you instructions for measurement will custom fit no charge. I bought a set of their nike slingshot irons (Knock off) and am very pleased. I also bought their knock RX 7 driver, can hit it almost 300 yds, not bad for an old man. Your order comes in a week and no shipping charge over 150.

I add my agreement to the used clubs idea. I got my current set over 10 years ago used. They were a demo set for a local store that I got when the new ones came in. New set of irons was about $1000, I got the used ones for $250. They had been hit on a plastic mat, but a little cleaning and they looked brand new. I used to play 3-5 rounds a week, and while they are now a little worn, they still work fine.

I'm 6'3", so I got the grips extened by an inch. See if the place that you buy the clubs form will regrip the clubs (huge difference) and when they do they can add an extension for you.

I wouldn't pay huge money for a set of "custom" clubs when you can get the same result for much less money.

If you want new irons, you should start looking now. Usually by midsummer all the serious golfers have made their yearly purchases so there should be some deals out there.

If you have never golfed before try getting a set of used clubs (Cavity Backs, maybe offset from the shaft, do not get blades). Demo sets are usually a good idea (get them regripped as soon as possible).

Keep a lookout in the local buy&sell newspaper/webpage for a good set of used clubs.

Ebay.com is another spot.
golfsmith.com, golfwarehouse.com are places you can browse on the net and get a feel for what is out there.

I have been to a lot of garage sales and it's almost impossible to pick up a decent set of clubs from the sales.

Here's my ULTIMATE recommendation.
If you can afford it, get yourself a rescue club. Shelve the 3i and 4i. Too tough to hit for a beginner.
I picked up a Cleveland Halo 3i rescue club. It's freaking unbelievable.

Thanks guys. I went to Sports Authority over the weekend and picked up a set of Wilsons(yeah I'm sure they suck but I'm not too picky and I was sick of looking). It had a driver, 3 and 5 wood, putter, 5-P irons, and a hybrid club, it also came with a bag. They retailed at $350 but were on sale for $200.

Went to the driving range last nite and I sucked. I hit a few that looked real pretty but the majority were duck snorts. I'm headed to a 4 man scrabble in about 15 minutes. I'll follow with a trip report tonight if I get a chance.

My suggestion, is you don't visit thegolfwarehouse.com

If you do, expect to be broke for the rest of your life :) lol

Grrrr, I can't resist that damn place... (glances at Visa bill) Oh hummm..

Anyways, nice place to shop for clubs... Good prices, good sales, refurbished clubs, new clubs, etc...

I'm loving my Cleveland Halo 3i rescue club. 3/4 swing and I just let in drop without too much effort and the ball flight is straight and long (about 210yds).

In Canada the Golf shops/Pro Shops list this club at about $190. But it can be had on ebay for about $110. I use the golf shops to test out the clubs and now I'll buy online or in warehouses.
Halo
