The following is excerpted from Dave Perkins's column in this morning's Toronto Star:
"Love wasn't brave enough to tell a handful of Canadian reporters, after he missed the cut at Carnoustie, that he would take a pass (on the Canadian Open). Pretended he hadn't made up his mind by then.
Beyond Love, five golfers hooked rides on the RCGA's charter flight out of Edinburgh, but had no intention of playing here. Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly hitchhiked on the way home to Wisconsin. Carl Pettersson, Ryan Moore and Boo Weekley were added because of weather problems that crippled Heathrow Airport. Both Moore and Weekley had committed to this event, then withdrew. They still had the stones to take the flight home, though."
Between them, these five golfers (other than Love) have earned $8,481,721. Pettersen (54th, $1,137,302) is the lowest ranked and all have earned their card for next year. DL3 (85th, $789,989) was paid some $250,000 to redesign this week's course for the Open. If I were the RCGA, I'd be inclined to send them all an invoice for $1,500 or so for what was no doubt a comfortable, stress free and well-catered flight.
