0 Subject: The 2008 Season

Posted by: Theodore Wanberg - [4011132010] Thu, Dec 20, 2007, 11:13

Guru, when will the 2008 season get underway? I have been away from best ball for too long.

I haven't set final plans yet, but in the past, I've usually gotten the site up for a couple of preseason tournaments by the end of January, with the official opening two weeks later.

If that pattern holds, then preseason action will start with the FBR Open on Jan 31, with the official launch on Feb 14 with the Northern Trust Open. That is not set in stone, however.

If I really get moving, I could possibly accelerate that schedule by a week. We'll see how next week goes.

For the 2008 PGA tour, in addition to "made cut" or "did not make cut", get used to a third category - "MDF". These guys won't play on the weekend.

The PGA tour has new cut rules for 2008...

From ESPN.com Sony Open recap

Regular PGA Tour events, which typically start with fields of 132, 144 or 156 players, have long had a 36-hole cut with the top 70 players and ties advancing to the final two rounds.

But in November, in an effort to keep field sizes smaller, the PGA Tour Policy Board enacted a new rule: The top 70 and ties still make the cut. But if the cut exceeds 78 players, only the number nearest to 70 continues in the tournament.

In the case of the Sony, there were 87 players who finished at even-par 140 or better. The nearest number to 70 was 69 players at 1-under 139 or better. So 18 players were credited with a made cut and paid $9,699.

So that is going to mean less players are playing on the weekend in terms of our final GuruGolf bestball or worstball score, so it won't be the cut line we are necessarily watching but the cut and advance to the weekend line.

How this will impact pricing is Guru's call.

Just looking at some schedule options.

For the March 20-23 tournament, I have a choice of:
1. WGC-CA Championship as Doral
2. Puerto Rican Open

The PR Open is a new event this year, and will have a full field with a cut. The WGC event will be stroke play, but will have only approx 70 golfers and no cut.

In the past, I've tended to go with tournaments that offer a cut when there is a choice, even when that tournament does not attract the leading golfers. I think that's still my preference, although I'll throw that out for comment. Last year, we used this WGC event - but I don't think there was an alternative tournament that week.

For July 31-Aug 3, we have a similar choice between the WGC event (at Firestone) and the Reno-Tahoe Open. I used the Reno Tahoe Open last year - same reasoning.

Finally, I've typically ended the GuruGolf season with the TOUR Championship. However, this year, there are two weeks between the next-to-last Fedex event and the TOUR Champ (with the Ryder Cup squeezed in between). Rather than keeping the game open (but dormant) for those weeks, I think I will simply end the season with the BMW Championship, which is just before the Ryder Cup break.

Does this all seem reasonable?

Going with the full field events with a cut against WGC limited field no cut events is consistent with how GuruGolf has worked in prior seasons when there are multiple events over the same period. So going with the PR Open and Reno/Tahoe seems logical.

I'm up in the air about whether it is better ending with the BMW or the TOUR championship. It seems reasonable if you end it with the BMW since there is a gap before the TOUR championship which is also is a limited field no cut event, and therefore would be tough for anyone to make much movement up the standings. However, if there was no gap then I'd be more for keeping it included as it is the season ending event. So for me, it just comes down to whether the gap in events causes people to lose focus on GuruGolf.

Either way, can't wait!

Even though historically I do poorly at getting guys to make the cut, I think its a crucial element to the game. I'd favor (where a choice exists), usaing the tourney with a cut vs the one w/o. As for when to end the season...thats upto you Guru. With the lag between events, I can certainly see the logic with ending it after the BMW.

I have to vote in favor of cut tournaments, as well. Mixing in players that don't go to WGC events on option weeks is part of the strategy of GuruGolf.

I hate trading good golfers that are going to a WGC event just to pick up scrubs who will likely be dumped the week after WGC when the top 70 guys are back in the field. Late in the season, this can be a six or more trade-burning exercise.

How about this? Guru imposes a Guru-Cut for the last round or two of the WGC tourneys. That way we have a cut, get to use the best available golfers, and can watch them on regular TV. That being said I have no idea what sort of logistical problems this would cause Guru.

Oops. Looks like I inadvertently triggered a "remember to set your weekly lineup" email this afternoon. If you got one, ignore it.

[7] I understand the concern. However, the first event is held early in the season, when most teams lack enough value to load up on many top 70 players. For the August event, that's not so much an issue, but by then, you should have enough trades. If not, buy one.

I think using an artificial cut is fraught with problems. What if someone who misses the notional cut goes on to win the tournament?

I'm not quite sure where WBJ found the commitment list last year, but if someone wants to direct me to them I could put together something similar to last year. I know it helped me out until i quit to focus on football last year. (That was a mistake)

To create a team, you go to the "My Account" page, and enter a team name in the top text box. Then click the button to the right which says "Create this team". You can't simply hit enter. You have to click that button.

Once you do that and your team is created, then you will be able to pick up players on the "Manage Roster" page.

Looking for clarification on the new rule for provisional golfers:
The provisional golfer rule is the only material change from last year. This year, a golfer can only be replaced by a provisional golfer if he fails to complete any holes.

Does this mean any player who completes one hole of the first round cannot be replaced, even if he is later DQ'd during the round. My understanding is a DQ renders the current round invalid meaning, according to the PGA, it's as if he didn't complete any holes.

If I'm interpreting it correctly, pretty much the only golfers that will be replaced will be those who withdraw before teeing off.

You are interpreting it correctly. The original purpose of the provisional golfer rule was to protect against last minute withdrawals, and that is the basis for the current treatment. Thus, a player who completes at least one hole and then is officially DQ'd is not eligible for provisional replacement.

Although a DQ may render the current round irrelevent from the PGA's perspective, completed hole scores have continued to be reported at PGATour.com, and GuruGolf practice has always been to include any and all scores that are reported at PGATour.com. In effect, that becomes the basis for administering provisional golfer eligibility.
