Typically, I start the GuruGolf season around the beginning of February. Often, the first week is a preseason (exhibition) week, which allows me to shake out any bugs associated with the new season.

This year's tournament calendar brings an added twist. The only tournament scheduled for the week of Feb 20-24 is the WGC match play event. I can't use this tournament, given its match play format. In prior years, there was always a secondary tournament scheduled against it - most recently the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico. But that tournament has moved to the fall, and nothing has taken its place.

If I stuck with the typical schedule, I'd use next week's ATT Pebble Beach tourney as the preseason event, and then start the season with the following week's Northern Trust Open. But that would mean that the opening of the season would be followed by a one week hiatus. Not ideal. The Pebble Beach tourney has the additional complication that three different courses are used. I've solved that issue in the past, but I think it would be the only tournament this year on multiple courses, and that's a programming headache I wouldn't mind avoiding.

So, this is a long winded explanation as to why I'm planning to wait an extra week, and start the preseason with the Northern Trust Open (Feb 14-17). After the one week break, the regular season will start with the Honda Classic, which begins the Eastern part of the Tour schedule.

Are there any rules tweaks that I might consider for 2013?

One thing that I'm considering is the ability to sell a trade in order to raise cash. Currently, there is the ability to buy an extra trade for $100, but no ability to sell a trade.

If I did this, I'd probably price a sold trade at $50, and limit this to no more than 10 sold trades over the course of a season. This would mean that someone who excels at trade conservation would have the ability to add an extra $500 to his team value over the course of a season. That's a useful amount, but not a game changer.

Does that seem like a reasonable idea? It would require a little extra programming - but I think it would be pretty simple to set up. And we could decide after the season whether it's worth continuing into future years.

I was thinking about this last year. What if one team has the best ball score, the worst ball score and also has the tournament winner for a tournamment. They get a 500 dollar bonus added to their team salary. (or more) You can call it the "Guru Triple Eagle" I dont think anyone has ever done it but if someone does they should be compensated for it. Just my 2 cents.

I like the trade selling idea. I don't often find myself in the position to take advantage of it, but I like the idea.

I also like the trade selling idea. Adds a bit of strategy. I can definitely see myself using it for the end of the FedEx Cup if I have trades left. I'm sure I'll be tempted to use it during the regular season too even though I had to buy at least one trade last year.

Selling trades is an added twist. Usually early I conserve trades because there is always that tourney before or after a major that wipes my roster. Then late I usually have a glut but not enough cash to complete a roster for the final event.

If you do allow a limited number of trades to sell perhaps you have to reward teams who have leftovers with their trade cash equivalent after the final event when determining the highest roster value winner.

Or totally change the game and award each team the cash value of two trades after each event and they have to buy every trade they use after their initial allotment is exhausted

Or leave as is, as it is still one of my favorite web fantasy game

I agree with the concept of being able to raise additional RV, be it by selling trades or otherwise.

I found myself ( as did most I suspect ) of entering the last tournament ( at least, can't remember for sure ) with having to fill a roster with as many as three minimum values, non playing golfers to field a team.

Or somehow tweak the pricing mechanism.

+1 on the trade selling idea.

-1 on the albatross bonus.
Teams that pick the right golfers are already rewarded with higher RV to go with their high scores.
Increasing the gap between the have and have nots would be a step backwards.

Just launched GuruGolf 2013 .

Trade selling is the only rule change.

Please let me know if there are any apparent errors or programming glitches.

The only preseason tournament will be the upcoming Northern Trust Open (Feb. 14-17).

I know it is not February yet, but any ETA for when GuruGolf 2014 will be launched?

I'll follow the same schedule as last year, opening with the Honda Classic as the first official tournament. The week before that is the WGC matchplay event, which is not conducive to GuruGolf, and there is no traditional stroke-play tournament running that weekend.

I do hope to have the site up for a preseason drill for the Northern Trust Open, Feb 13-16. But we won't start playing for keeps until Feb 27.
