In checking out my roster for the St. Jude I have discovered that Jordan Spieth, who finished 3rd with a -13 and he lost 20 points! How can this be? I also note that Graham DeLaet who finished way down the chart increased by 50 points. It does not make sense.

This type of question comes up every season.

All players are first ranked based on the relative difficulty of their pars and under par scores. For example, a birdie on a hole which many players birdied is not worth nearly as much as a birdie on a hold with very few birdies. While net score might be a good high-level indicator of general tournament performance, it does not necessarily reflect a player's value in a best ball format, where a rare birdie is worth much more than a common birdie.

Here is a link to the hole-by-hole results for each player: http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/gallcards.pl?tourney=30

Although Spieth had a good net score, on my proprietary measurement basis, he ranked only 23rd in the total field. Apparently, many of his birdies (better) were on holes where those scores were not as rare.

Next, remember that everything is valued relative to price.

Spieth entered the tournament as highest priced golfer in the field. His slight decline in price reflects the assessment that his performance was more in line with a player priced somewhat lower. So his price moved in that direction.

Meanwhile, DeLaet was ranked #31 on this same measurement basis - but at a price of only $980. His ranking was consistent with a much higher priced golfer, so his price increased a bit, again trending to the higher target.

The results are not always intuitive when looking at tournament standings, but this is the approach I've been using for many years now, and I think it does a pretty good job of moving player prices toward a level that reflects their value in a best ball format.
