From NHL.Com Red Wings defenseman Derian Hatcher will miss four to six months after tearing a ligament in his right knee during a game.
He was hurt when he got tangled up with Vancouver's Markus Naslund and Bryan Allen early in Detroit's 3-2 victory Thursday.
Hatcher was the runner-up in voting last season for the Norris Trophy, awarded to the NHL's top defenseman.
He signed a five-year, $30 million contract with his hometown team in July after playing the first 12 seasons of his NHL career in the Dallas Stars' organization.
The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Hatcher was being counted on to bring a physical presence on defense that the Red Wings have lacked since Vladimir Konstantinov was injured in a limousine accident in 1997, less than a week after the team won the Stanley Cup.
Detroit has opened this season with three straight victories.

I was watching the game. It didn't really look all that akward or anything. He just tripped over someone's foot and went down. The announcers didn't even realize he was injured until about 10 minutes later. So we still got the Chelios vs. Bertuzzi battle.

I didnt see an injury either... 4 to 6 months... That would put him out till Feb. or April... He turned into being a GREAT investment for the Wings...

As a Stars fan, and definitely not one that ever wishes the Red Wings well, this sucks. Hatcher is a class act, and an absolute team player that has always been accountable and has an excellent memory for ills brought on his team mates (ask Jeremy Roenick after he knocked out Modano with a cheap shot a few years ago). What a tremendous loss for the R Wings. Dallas had already suffered the loss, now Detroit will join Dallas in missing Hatch's presence.
