Subject: Popup Killer Download

I just installed this free program, and it works like a charm. No more sweepstakes, hobby rats, etc.
Popup Killer
The default settings are that the program doesn't delete any popups unless you specifically tell it to. I ended up just telling it to close the three popups that always come up in Smallworld. I'm sure the program is much smarter than that if you fiddle around with it. |

Oh yeah...ignore the comments on the download page. I can tell you it took me 1 minute to install, 1 minute to reboot, and 30 seconds to figure out how it works.

Great idea! Too bad it'll only work for me at home, on my windows 98 operating system. I use NT at work...

FWIW, I looked at the Popup Killer publisher (xFX JumpStart) and found out:
1) There is a "minor" upgrade to the version on CNET (dated yesterday)
2) It works with NT (also 2000 and ME versions of Windows), but no MAC (sorry KKB)

Ph-Ph, it says it works with NT on the CNET site, but once I downloaded it and looked into the HELP feature, it said it would only kill pop-up ads in systems using 95/98 and something else that was not NT. Perhaps the download you found (which has the same exact filename as the one I previously downloaded thanks to this now famous thread), is indeed different. I will try again. This is really something I want to have!!
I did a search on these products and found "adsoffNT," specifically for NT users. It kills all advertisements, not just pop-up's, or so it claims. No success for me. I may have a myriad of firewall problems though.

Nope. Same version of pop-up killer (1.8.11) which in the HELP section says it'll only work with 95/98 and OSR2.
And the adsoff thang does not work for me. I am on a quest to find one of these products that works on my work-PC. What a challenge!

Fick, now I know why "Adsoff" does not work. Their help section says it's "incompatible with proxy servers." Who would be running NT without proxy servers?
The quest continues!

Jayzus! There are many of these pop-up ad killers. I have found at least 8 on CNET. And pop-up killer has a version for NT. Downloaded. Fingers-crossed. Installed. Rebooting...

Try disabling javascript (not java itself, just javascript) in your browser. The SW site doesn't look quite as "pretty," yet seems to be just as functional ... and I wasn't hit with a single pop-up. In Netscape: Edit, Preferences, Advanced, deselect the "Enable JavaScript" box. You can always go back and restore the setting after leaving Small World.

Looks like Mario is right. It worked. But it sure is ugly. Mario this seems to work in lieu of using the pop-up killer software...right?

walk: Perhaps a solution for those who prefer not to, or are unable to, use a pop-up killer. I'd be interested in knowing if this provides some "Mac" relief.

IE5 users who cannot take advantage of a pop-up killer: Select Tools, Internet Options, Security, Custom Level. Scroll down to "Scripting" (it's near the bottom of the menu). Click the radio button to Disable each of the following: • Active scripting • Allow paste operations via script • Scripting of Java applets No pop-ups. You will not be able to use some of the frilly functions (e.g., Message Boards) but still should be able to log in, view rosters, buy and sell players, etc., and can restore your security settings when you leave Small World.

Mac users,
Try as I may for the past hour (and my search skills are formidable), I could not find a popup killer for the Mac. Google, Alta Vista, Ask Jeeves, Macworld, ZDnet, Cnet, and a host of smaller Apple oriented sites all yielded nothing. Sorry :(

OK, I have found an improvement to Mario's solution of disabling javascript. You can make smallworld.com a restricted site in IE5. Then you can just disable the scripting just for the restricted sites. Here is what to do:
Select Tools, Internet Options, Security, click on Restricted Sites icon. Click on "sites" button then add http://*.smallworld.com to the list. The default for restricted sites is to disable all the scripting functions, but it also disables cookies, you will need to enable "allow per-session cookies (not stored)", otherwise SW won't know you are logged on, but the rest of the defaults work OK, and no pop-ups! And every other site that have javascript will work just fine (of course you may want to try this on other sites also...)
(Of course if you have restricted other sites or have played with the settings for restricted sites, you may have to do other things also.)

VERY NICE workaround pp.
I wonder how pissed off SW would get if you posted it at their message boards? I took a look over there the other day and noticed there were some messages about this topic there also. Looks like SW is making a lot of fans mad. Not good...

BUTT
I used to have this program but it is not on download.com anymore. This program was the best one I have ever used but since I bought a new computer, stupid pop-ups have come up numerous times.
Does anyone have the setup file to this program anymore? It would be GREATLY appreciated if someone could send it to me.\
