Please post if you feel the Memoriam thread should stay at the top of these boards for the rest of the year as a dedication to Paul our fallen comrade

I think some kind of tribute to philliephan would be most appropriate. Whether it be keeping the thread at the top or some kind of banner or something I am all for it.

Word up, I am definitely D with it, anything and everything to keep him in mind for at least the rest of the season is the least we, the gurupie community, can do to show our condolensces to his family.

How about a logo that sits at the top of all rotoguru pages (that shouldn't be too hard to do). It could have something to do with Philly sports or something that he felt strongly about. Maybe it could turn into a link to a memorial with many of his contributions, some photos, and the memoriam thread. Just an idea. He should be honoured on the boards somehow, IMO.

I like the idea of a banner dedicated to Paul. I am also in favor of some sort of special notation on his entry in the Gurupie Hall of Fame. A new wing in the HoF, Mario, would be appropriate as well.

I agree that something nice would be nice. I imagine Dave was one of Paul's closest internet/email buddies, and would likely guess that Dave would be the first in line to petition this, and make it happen.

Good thoughts,

I will definitly think of some way to honor him with the standings each day.

I think they will now be known as the "Philliephan Standings". (I hope that will fit) I dont know, maybe I'll think of something else.

I really like the idea of the banner at the top.

What about this: Use KKB's post #118 (in the other thread) picture at the top of the hockey forum, I see a good spot right in between "Rotoguru Hockey Forum" and the dropdown boxes. And we can also put a picture of him next to that.

Definitely a tribute of some kind, If we were an actual team, we would where his number on our jerseys.... Along those lines i think something with a banner or icon at the top of all pages would be appropriate.

I don't think he played sports although I know he officiated at swim meets. But if I was to wear a number on a black armband, it would have to be either 99 or 3. Ninety-nine because he was a "great one" or three, because in my first year of playing, I was chasing him all year in our division. I finished a distant second to his team which was WWR 3.
Still awaiting word of arrangements . . .
I should have a picture or two by later today or tomorrow. I might need some help posting it.

The banner is quite nice, but I think it's a little large to plaster at the top of the forum.

KKB: Think you could either shrink it, or perhaps create a slimmed down version? (We could still use the larger one inside a thread.)

I could use it as an image link to the thread with the philliephan testimonials, although it might be more appropos to create a new "Tribute" thread in which we all shared a philliephan anecdote or remembrance. The current "In memoriam" thread is mostly a thread of grief and condolences to the family - which may not be the best long-term tribute, although it could be referenced (and linked) in the "Tribute" thread.

Before we start such a thread, though, let's continue to share ideas here. Once we have a plan, we can initiate the necessary activities.

Great work, KKB.

To be sure, and I'm just making sure we do not do something that someone else, who has supreme veto power, would not want us to do in public... I think we should ask (maybe jumpball can do this) Paul's wife & kids (in time) if she/they would like the family picture posted (or not). Maybe this has already been done (if so, nevermind). Since it's for public consumption (even though we know it's a very small community that visits these sites, compared to say Amazon.com), I think we need their "okay" before posting pictures.

Just my "human resources"/psychologist side coming to bear. Chances are, this "okay" has already been gotten (and then I'll self-edit this post!).

thanks,

We do not have permission to use the pictures yet. And probably won't until I get a chance to talk with the family on Friday evening (at the earliest) and show them the banners.

I'd suggest using the generic version with only Paul's picture (KKB did one -- hope he still has it) for a while and then changing it to use the family picture if they give their approval.

We seem to be searching within ourselves for appropriate ways to preserve the memory of Paul Scheirer, and there have been several very thoughtful ideas proposed throughout this forum. Without a doubt, hockey was philliephan's game, yet the sport at times seems like the proverbial red-headed stepchild of the Small World family. Once the regular season is over, it's over ... no post-season contest ... nothing.

Maybe we can change that, if Guru Dave will at long last forgive the Whalers and create a playoff game for us. (Rule #1: Everyone is eligible, including residents of Florida and Quebec.) The grand prize: the philliephan cup and induction into the RotoGuru Hall of Fame. Voluntary donations or a nominal entry fee might be solicited for the privilege of competing for this honor, with the net proceeds going into a fund for the benefit of Paul's children, either now or to be set aside for their college years.

My fantasy league motto always has been, "If it ain't free, it ain't for me," but I certainly would make an exception in this case ... and would do my best to give Harkonnon a run for his deutschemarks.

Mario- This is a wonderful idea... I'm already saving for my voluntary donation.

P.S. This could also possibly be a yearly event... With the proceeds always going to the fund..

I agree with you Mario the idea of a post season with a entrance fee which will go 100% to a fund for Pauls children for coll. or whatever is needed. Hopefully Dave will agree to do so.

Great idea in #50 Ms LeMoose, but the game would likely have to one that does not require too much of Dave's time. Rmember, Dave only has so much of it!. IMO, this is actually an difficult request, and kinda puts Dave in a very awkward position. If Guru says: "sorry, but I really can't manage the time," no matter how diplomatically (and he's quite good at that), it'll feel odd, and the guilt could send him over the edge.

;-)

Our thoughts and feelings and efforts should come first, and then, if we want some kinda game, we might need to take the initiative ourselves to hire a contractor. Guru's input would be great, but I think I recall a number of different posts from him over the years that indicate that he just does not have the time, nor the inclination to use whatever little time he has during a very busy sports time of year (hoops and baseball start) to devote to hockey.

I do not want to sound like a party pooper, and I am sure I do sound just like one now, but I also want us to respect Guru's time. To be a workaholic at one's "hobby" defeats the essence of retiring to play a hobby!

Actually I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure it takes a good deal of effort to assemble a playoff game. Maybe smallworld will do a playoff hockey game this year. They did in baseball, which surprised us. I know philliephan was playing the pick 'ems game. Maybe something along those lines could be done. A Gurupie initiated game.

(See the gift thread for information regarding the trust fund.)

When I talked to Paul's wife this afternoon, she looked very touched by the sample banner that I showed her with the picture of Paul and their two kids. She indicated that it would be ok to use that banner if a there was to be a tribute.

However, I believe that we should wait a while.
Let's use the banner without the pictures for a while. When her head is a little clearer, I'll bring up the subject again and discuss it.

These have somewhat been kicked around, but i was thinkng you know how they have all those names for trophies like the Calder Award and Vezinia (or whatever). I think winning the top spot in hockey should be officially known as winning the 'Paul Scheirer Cup' and perhaps at the end of the year vote on the 'Philliephan Award' for the person who has added most to the hockey boards. (Kind of like a guru jr for the year award).

I like the idea of naming the Rotoguru Hockey HOF "Paul Scheirer Hockey Hall of Fame".

The idea of a playoff game to honor philliephan is cool, but probably not practical, but how about a playoff pick'ems? Guru is a pick'ems mastermind.
