Subject: philliephan memorial service

The memorial service for philliephan will be held at 3:00PM on Friday.
The main speaker at the service, a long time friend of Paul's has asked for "stories or anecdotes about Paul".
I have the "In Memoriam" thread in both soft and hard format to give to the family. I will be putting the other threads that JeffG linked in a package to give to them at a later date. If there are any other stories that you can remember, please post them here or send to my email address before noon on Friday.
The one I remember the most was a "Leiter Watch" thread from this summer, where someone posted it early in the morning in an attempt to jinx Al. philliephan and J were hilarious talking about Al having problems with his control (he tossed his napkin towards the trash can and missed if I remember correctly) while "watching" his every move that morning. If you have details on this one or any other humorous ones, please pass them along.
And one other thing. I'd like to suggest that the Gurupies observe a few minutes of silence on the message boards starting at 3PM Friday Eastern time in memory of philliephan.

I will impose a 15 minute "moment of silence" from 3:00-3:15pm EST on Friday in memory of Paul.
My earliest memories of Paul were when he started his hockey site. He asked me if I could provide a link from RotoGuru.com, which I was delighted to do. Soon thereafter he shared his sortable stats program with me, which got me started using PERL, the results of which are the significant expansion of capabilities (and an incredible savings in my personal preparation time). He directed me to a couple of free hosting services that I used in the early days - although both eventually booted me off for excessive resource consumption (for which I have the rest of you to blame!) Even his site enjoyed enough traffic of late that he had to pull up stakes and move to another server.
Paul was also a trailblazer with the message forum. He had one at his site before I had one at mine. But when I set up my first forum, he quickly suggested that I include a hockey area that could be integrated with the other sports. He was more interested in promoting the community than he was in preserving his turf.
Paul was the 9th person inducted into the RotoGuru Hall of Fame, for his strong finish in both the Smallworld and CNN/SI baseball games in 1999. He could talk the talk, and walk the walk.
Paul was like me in many ways - an avid sports fan who was technically proficient, intellectually curious, and just as interested in the camaraderie of the game as he was in the competition. We are also approximately the same age, which makes his passing all the more poignant for me.
I wish I had been able to know him better.

Dave, the moment of silence is a great tribute. I'm sure Paul will be smiling down on us knowing that we are all thinking of him.

I will be in the middle of a final exam during this moment of silence, but be certain that I will take the time to think about Paul....

jumpball, just curious, but where is the service being held? Paul moved a year or two ago, from what I recall, so I was just curious.
Paul was a very kind person, who helped me out when I decided to start playing SW hockey 3 seasons ago. I'd not followed the sport since the Cleveland Barons left town, so most of the names were unknown to me. His e-mails and hockey site (and message board!) were a big help to me. He didn't know me from anyone but from the first e-mail he was friendly to the point where I wondered if I already knew him.
Moment of silence. Great idea. I'm watching my 3-year-old and I'll try to get him to agree ;)
Seems to me Paul had some good comments on the last Happy Father's Day thread on the baseball boards.

I can't find the Father's Day thread --- it must have been deleted.

Neither could I. Couldn't find the Blue Hen, Jr. thread on the same board either. Looks like victims of fall cleaning. :(

Yeah, thanks, Guru. Lost to the ether.
Took a look through the old forum but only found a few messages and nothing really of note.
