0 Subject: Philliephan Memorial Gift(s)

jumpball passed along the following info:

The family has asked that everyone please refrain from sending flowers. Paul's son is terribly allergic to them, and any flowers will have to be left at the church. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution is encouraged to do so with one of the following:

Lancaster Theological Seminary
555 North James Street
Lancaster, PA.

Pennington Presbyterian Church
13 So. Main St.
Pennington, New Jersey 08534

any other worthy charity which you would like to support.

I see several ways to approach this.

1. Let everyone make their own decision to support one of these organizations, or donate to another.

2. Decide on a common charity and ask all Gurupies to individually donate to it.

3. Decide on a common charity and set up a central collection point so that we can forward all of our checks together.

Thought: are there any charities that are identified with any of Paul's favorite teams? For example, the Jimmy Fund is associated with the Boston Red Sox.

Your feedback is appreciated.

I vote for a common charity with a donation made in the name of all Gurupies

I prefer either 1 or 2. If we cummulate our memorial gifts, the total amount given may cloud the number of contributors. I think it is important to convey the number of people Paul befriended. If we make individual donations in his name and with his address, the recepient will mail a thank you to Paul's family informing them of the contribution made in Paul's name. Of course, I will abide by majority wishes.

Guys, Pennington is only about a half-hour from my house here in Jersey. I'd be happy to collect on behalf of anyone if people want to go that route.

Rather than making one large donation, I can go over there in person with a large number of smaller donations (building on Taxman's idea, a personal visit will go even that much further to show the effect of Paul's memory).

I'm not pushing for donations to the Pennington church, just offering my services.

Guru, thanks for passing on the info.

pd, thanks for offering your services. Anyway we do it will be wonderful, but I like Taxman's idea because it might have greater impact. I also think we should take advantage of Perm Dude's offer to help centralize our efforts. That is what you were offering, wasn't it?

Taxman, PD, and philflyboy have a good idea going. What may work best is to allow each Gurupie to choose the chairty (or charities) they want to donate to and then send the check along to PD (for the church) or philflyboy (for the seminary) and then have them personally deliver all the checks to the respective charity. This way each Gurupie can choose their charity and still show how much of an effect Paul had on our community.

There has been some talk here at work about setting up a trust fund for Paul's kids.
If it becomes a reality, I'll be sure to post something.

Additionally, we should keep records of whatever is done since Paul's family wants to be aware of what donations were made.

pd, thanks for starting this effort. I am sending you a small donation in the mail tonight and will trust your judgment and onto which fund to pass it along to in Paul's name.

Also, as stated on Sludge's thread Pickoff & philliephan in the football forum, he and I have both further pledged 10% of any of our pickoff winnings to this collection as well, assuming we are fortunate enough to finish in the money. Currently we are ranked #1 and #2.

Need some help!

I have framed a copy of KKB's tribute to present to the family. I want to put a sticker on the back as a reminder to the family of where it came from. Something like:
"To the Scheirer family, with remembrance of Paul from the Rotoguru.com family"

But since I'm not that great at putting words together, I'm going to ask you for suggestions.
Thanks in advance. I'll post a picture (if I can) later.

Go to the bottom of the RotoGuru Hockey Forum main page, the one that lists: the different thread topics, who started the thread, number of resposes ect.

You will see a box that says "Post a new message".

That"s It

Here's my report from the memorial service (yes, it's different id)
There were between 700 and 800 swollen and damp eyes in the church, and at least 20 cars illegally parked outside. (How many SWP is that?)
His daughter created the cover of the bulletin, which I plan to scan and have posted when I get back to work next week. The "Memorial Reflections" segment of the service included many anecdotes from his work, along with information from the Forum Registry, some of the testimonial from Guru, and an indication of the number of respondents in the "In Memoriam" thread.

For those of you concerned about continuing your participation in the SW games, I must report to you that his son has asked me to help keep Paul's football teams going for the final 2 weeks. (I don't know about the hockey teams, but he wouldn't want my advice there anyway.) What I'd like to do is figure out a way for him to pass me in our division. . . anyone have a crystal ball?

This has been a very difficult week.
I am now officially totaled.
But before I rest, I must post in the other threads.

Paul, I hope you are feeling the love.
My personal wish as a result of this tragic loss is that we all take a lesson from Paul and treat others on this board the way Paul would have treated them -- with a helpful, friendly and jovial message.

Almost forgot.
I talked to the family about contributions. What I learned was mostly that Paul's wife is a very unselfish and giving person. She indicated that if anyone feels the need to make a contribution, they should make it to the charity/organization of their choice in Paul's name, the Seminary or church listed above, or to the children's trust funds (they each have one). In my opinion, the order that I listed is roughly the order of her preference.

The Seminary now has a sholarship fund, and donations should be made to:
Scheirer Scholarship Fund at the
Lancaster Theological Seminary
Attention: Business Office
555 N. James Street
Lancaster, PA 17603

I am willing to be a point man for donations to the trust funds. However, I would appreciate very much if someone will please take the responsibility of coordinating this effort. I need to rest, reflect, and take some time for my family this weekend.

Thanks for the update jumpball. I've been wondering off and on all afternoon about the service.

I know this week has been very hard on you. Without your constant updates, we would have had very little insight to the situation at hand. Thankyou for being Paul's friend and for sharing with us your observations and thoughts throughout this week.

I am willing to be the contact person to consolidate the list of donations made in Paul's honor. Please let me know of any donations made in Paul's memory and I will consolidate the list and then forward the list to his family.

I have known Paul for the past 10 years (and have worked with him for the first 5 of those years). The last time I saw Paul was last Memorial Day, when he and his family were at my house.

And one more thing regarding contributions:
corner is looking into charitable organizations around the Northern Virginia area in an attempt to identify one that combines kids and sports; two of the most important things in Paul's life.
I hope she is sucessful and posts the information.

A trust fund will be set up for Paul's kids. More details to follow soon.

Paul's family was the most important thing to him (followed, of course, a very close second by sports...*wink*). As his wife said in the biography of Paul (included in the bulletin of the service in memory of Paul):

"Paul was my best friend. He was patient and kind and loving. We were married on January, 2, 1982, and from the first day it was like we had always been together. He was an amazing Dad. He came home every day at 4:30pm and was always there to help with homework, drive to practices, or play a game. He shared his love of math and computers with (his children). He coached their teams even when he had to figure out how the game was played. He went to every game he could. He took them bowling every Saturday morning. He liked golf and bowling. Paul was amazingly smart. He was perfect for us."

And, of course, who could miss the fact that the very first thing he listed in his biography here at RotoGuru.com was that he was a father to his two children (now 14 and 12). Humbly, in second place, were his amazing accomplishments here.

If you'd like me to consolidate it on the list of contributions I'm assembling for Paul's family, please email me @ corner@erols.com. It doesn't really matter what (or if) you contribute to, nor how "little" your contribution was. The important thing is that you are thinking of Paul and his family (and that means a lot).
