Subject: Any Alternate Sources for SW Price Info?
Posted by: Richard
- [58435323] Thu, Dec 28, 17:39
I've found myself with a bit of spare time to dedicate to my hockey teams, but I'm feeling information starved with the "sortibles" down. In order to work thru my frustrations, I'm trying to find other alternative sources of information on the SW game.
There must be a fairly easy way to download the current prices for SW players since this info is an integral part of the package that make up the "sortibles". Anyone know the URL for current price information or anyone know how that info is accessed thru the SW site?
I'm looking for one file to download as I don't really want to pull that information down one player at a time.

hoops boy - I was wondering how you generate the price info file. Is there a file that you (I) can download from the SW servers or do you run a script that processes information (potentially from the team roster pages) and creates that price info file.
As Teddy suggests, I can loop thru (fairly quickly) the 30 team roster pages and grab the current price for each of the players. In fact while waiting for responses to this post, I created an Excel macro that does just that.
However, if SW has done the work for me and I can grab a single file why should I go thru with the effort to download and parse thru 30 team pages worth of info.

Rangers, The second pull-down menu ("Other Hockey Pages") at the top & bottom of the page, offers links to other sites, including a number of statistical tools for helping analyse SW statistics. There is/was a page which sorts players based upon a number of factors (postition, SWP/Game, price, etc) that seems to be acting up. Much faster and more versitile than the SW tools.

hoops boy, any chance you could team up with Guru to use his server??????? I really like the way his sartibles work, I was never a huge fan of the way Paul did them, but I'm still greatful he did, and you are.
Either way, thanks!

J, unfortunatly all of puals code was written in asp,and (afaik) all of dave's code is written in perl. I am sure dave's server doesn't support asp, as that was talked about once before. I may end up rewriteing the whole thing in perl, but Im going to try to avoid that if I can.

Got a new error (for me) this AM while trying to access Sortables. Error message:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'

Just an FYI, It's probably not new, just to me. ;-)

He may need to be added to the database. I'll send hoops boy an email.

The fine print: "RealFTP.com free service should be used for personal use only. Storing the files at RealFTP.com files and giving link from other sites to your file may cause termination of account."

Richard Unfortunately the server issues have delayed my studying of adding ipo's into the system. I did add mario into the database, but apparently in not enough places (if you go to the player pages, there is one for #66, but he doesn't have any stats associated with him) I'll look into it a little more and see what I have to do complete his entry.
LeMoose I read that differently the first time, thinking that you are not suppose to link to files on this site from other sites, such as people uploading tons of mp3's they link at from other websites. Either way I think this is probably a temporary server at best. I am currently looking into paying for web hosting but need to make sure everything will work with whatever host I go with, and admittedly am trying to keep my out of pocket $$ to a minimum. Hopefully that way we could at least finish off this season on one host.

hoops boy, is there any way we could try to convert it to PHP? If so, I could host it at Gleem at no cost.

Server is up, I did a little reconfigureing that should help things stay more stable, however I am looking to move into a permanent home soon. Also I think Mario is in, but his points/$$ arnt showing up yet. I will wait for the new stats tommorrow AM before hacking into the db again.
KKB, I'd love nothing more than to have this thing running on php, but short of a rewrite it doesnt seem likely. I ran the schedual matrix code through asp2php and it didnt like it, not to mention haveing to convert from access to mysql, and that app is infintely simpler than the rest of the code. If you want to take a crack at it, lmk and I'll hook you up with the source, but otherwise were on asp for now.

I've got a friend at work that knows a heck of a lot more ASP than me, so I'll check with him on TUE and get back with you.

I actually like KKB's idea about Gleem.com. It is usually fast, very user-friendly, and it has a URL which is easy to remember. I dont want to be a burden or cause any extra work for anybody, though, so if this is too much, forget about it.

hoops boy: The domaindlx site actually responded tonight! Is that the server you're referring to in #23, or the new (realftp) one? Player info is, of course, a week behind ... but my favorite tool (the simple little schedule viewer) works just fine.

mario I noticed that the old server started responding again, I think this is probably due in paert because most of the traffic is now going to the new server.

Ah, I see ... so the official new home for stats and schedules is http://ww2.realftp.com/fhs. Thanks, hoops boy. Just an FYI: the "real time" clock at that site seems to be behind by 20 minutes or so.

Mario Yeah... whats up with that? I thought my clock at home was off at first, but I have this atomic clock program I ran to double check. Along those lines I actually have to go back to work tommorrow, which means I'll have less time to devote to the whole thing, but the good news is updates should happen more on schedual (since I cant sleep in till 10:00 o'clock!)

hoops boy: Saw your note about the time difference at the top of the stats site home page ... cute! ;-) I have a little suggestion as you continue to make improvements (keep in mind that my ideas often involve effort on someone else's part): Might it be possible for you to incorporate KKB's philliephan banner between the horizontal rules on that page, update the blurb about Paul, and somehow work in a link to the trust fund thread? (Also, the ***Latest Info*** link at the top of the page leads to one of philliephan's old threads ... don't know how you want to deal with that.)
I'll bet you already have these items on your "to do" list.
Thanks.
