Subject: Time to remember a friend

It was one year ago today that our friend Philliephan passed away from a heart attack. Paul was always a great contributor to this web site and started the schedule viewer and stats sheets that we still use today.
here are a few threads that we should be reminded of during this time:
the Philliephan trust fund was set up here for his children.
This link will take you to the thread were people shared what they liked and will miss about Paul. Philliephan
For those of you who never had the privelege to meet Paul, I am sorry he was truly a great person to have on these boards. Jumpball told me that they were having a luncheon at his work place today in honor of his memory.
We miss you Paul!! |

Hard to believe it's been a year. It seems like just yesterday that we were all having a good time on the boards. We do miss you Paul!

And also see Guru's blurb today for a link to more of the remembrance threads.
Yes, we had a memorial lunch today. From what i can gather, the family has moved on and the kids are doing very well in school. I am hoping to invite them to another hockey game this year (March 10 is the current target date), mainly to keep in contact with philliephan jr. Who, unfortunately, has seems to have lost his interest in fantasy sports. He played baseball for a month or two and then dropped the team.
Paul, I miss you buddy. Fantasy sports are just not the same without you.

Heartwarming thread...he was a distinct personality on these boards, and a huge contributor to hockeyland. He is missed, but that seems kinda trite given how most of us interact (jumpball notwithstanding). Philliephan was a mainstay here, and clearly still is.

i left smallworld (and this message board as a result) for about a year, and the only guy i remembered other than the guru was philliephan. It was a shock when I came back and discovered he was no longer around.

jumpball, I should have better luck making a game this season now that I can give myself my own vacation time. Let me know if you get any details and want a few pals to join you all.

I never knew the guy, but I read his informative posts. I also appreciated his work on the sched/sorter. I was shocked to learn of this, as he was my age and I'm a father as well. Unfortunatly, recent catastrophic events have overshadowed a no-less tragic passing. My best wishes are extended to his family. I hope you are all doing well. Jumpball, there are 3 local games on 10March '01 ( including 2 matinees )...Atlanta @ Isle, 1:00. Edmonton @ Caps, 3:00. and the night game, Toronto @ Flyers, 7:00. I might get in trouble for posting this ( or maybe not ), but I can---on occasion---get access to a Luxbox @ MCI. I can get in myself ( and the Wife and kid ) anytime. A group would take some work, but it's not out of the question as this is a special event. If interested, fly me a kite ( name hyperlinked. ) and I'll see what strings I can pull. Peaceful journey, Paul! :-}

A year passes so quickly.
A mainstay here (this should be renamed the Philliephan Forum) as well as all the other forums. Just last week I was reading through some old Political Forum threads that he happened to contribute to.
Miss ya, Paul.

jumpball has sent me links to these threads. I wanted to let all of you know how meaningful they have been. Paul was the best person I ever met. One of the nicest things I heard someone say about him at his memorial service was that he was decent. One of the things I liked best about him was that he was always himself. The philliphan you met on these boards was the same person you would have met at the office or in a social situation. If you felt like you knew him from these boards, you did. Thanks again, it really helps to know how many people care.

pfb, unfortunately, it still hasn't been completed. If anyone (jumpball, pfb, mrs., etc.) has a large digital, or scanned, image of Paul, I would appreciate getting a copy so that I can get a more clear picture on the tribute. Also, I'm going to make some changes to the page and actually get it working here in the near future. Thanks for the unintended reminder pfb ;)

KKB and Greenbelt -- I sent you each mail. Let me know if you need anything else.
And for everyone -- There is a potential "gathering of gurupies" on March 10 at the MCI Center in Washington DC for a 3PM game between the Capitals and the Oilers . . . I'll keep you informed!!

Wow. A whole year already? Hard to believe. I, like many others here, never knew Paul, but certainly appreciated the work he did on the boards for all of us. Now that I'm expecting my own first child in a few months, I see even more the impact of this loss. It's tragic to have a father taken away from the family. God bless Paul's family at this holiday season.

An update on the March 10 hockey game . . . First the good news: Greenbelt was successful at getting seats! The bad news: mrs philliephan and philliephan jr will not be able to attend -- philliephan's parents are hosting a recital at their church in Paul's memory that day. And back to more good news . . . There are 2 or 3 seats that are still available! Right now Greenbelt, KKB (and his SO), philflyboy, and myself are there. One other seat has been offered.
The bottom line: if anyone here is interested and able to attend the March 10 game (3PM start) at MCI center, please post a message here and leave your e-mail address.

Gang; Just want to add that these aren't just "seats" but seats in one of the executive suites. Including food, drinks, TV ( it will be tuned to the ACC final! ) and private "can." pfb, I look foward to it as well! Perk ( and anyone else from up north or out of the area ), if any of y'all are thinking about flying in, I'll be more than happy to pick you up ( and drop off ) from BWI ( I can check on airfares for anyone interested ). Also, anyone driving in, can meet at my house and car-pool ( I have a car-pass for the underground parking garage ). Anyone needing to "stayover ( for airfare discounts )" can either crash @ my pad, or I'll book a room at the local Marriott. There's also talk of a brief chat-'n-grub at the "Capital Street Brewery" across the street from MCI after the game. We'll play it by ear. Should be a great game, as both teams are on the playoff bubble. Drop me a line for any needs/ideas.

Greenbelt, do you know if the Metro actually drops you off 0.1 mi from the MCI Center (Gallery Place Metro Station) like their web site claims? Anytime I go to DC I park at the Falls Church (VA) station and ride the Metro in to avoid all the traffic and everything else so I was thinking of doing the same thing for this. Can't beat $3.20 round-trip Metro fare. ;)

KKB;; EXACTLY! Gallery Place station is 2 blocks away from MCI. ( I think it's the blue line, not sure, haven't rode it out there in a while ) And yes, it's very convenient. The walk takes you right up to the main enterence and the will-call window. There's also a "Greenbelt" station coming from the other way. ( The only real advantage to a car-pass, is that I can park just steps away from the elevator! )Oh yeah, drop me an e-line and your phone #. I'm holding all 8 tix and want to make sure everyone gets in ( will-call can sometimes be unreliable, especially for suite tix. ).

Cool! I'll be sending the e-mail shortly. FWIW, Gallery Place is on the Red Line. Red, Blue, Green, Orange, Yellow, Ugh! It get's so confusing! ;) If anyone else is interested in the Metro (if you live close enough), here's the system map and here's the Gallery Place station.
