I was just wondering, being the cheap guy that I am.... What is the best way to get music these days? It seems i've tried them all... but none of these programs work consistently. What do you guys use... and why?

I use WinMX....because Twarpy told me to :)

It seems like the easiest to use of the ones I tried (ie-kazaa)

I use Audiogalaxy. And when that doesn't work, Kazaa Lite.

MP3s suck! Too much "swooshing" due to unreliability of compression.

Check out Makisupa's excellent coments on this thread regarding media! The man knows his stuff!!

WOW, I'm making my monthly lurk-through, and find a nice compliment from Greenbelt. Awww, shucks! Thanks! If you want some shows sometime, drop me a line you hippie.

While MP3's most certainly do suck, there is no other way to liberate copyrighted material than to deal with MP3 compression. The audio format I utilize (Shorten) is a 'lossless' scheme that is pretty much reserved for uptight hippies to trade live recordings with.

Anyhow, to answer your question, Kazaa seems to have a big following, but its a devil program. You'll need to clean your PC with Adaware, or a comparable program. This is probably a good thing anyhow if you are a regular websurfer. Kazaa installs spyware, and utilizes pop-up ad slamming. Nothing is worse than being at a website you know doesn't have pop-ups and still getting hit with a X10 camera ad.

Hope this helps.

TNX Maki, but you indirectly helped me out on some of those links! ;-}
( ...and I think I might just take you up on that offer, bro! )

As far as clean-up, that adaware is great, but also DL the Disk Cleaner. You can choose what you want cleaned-up after a sesh! ( and it puts a funny "oil funnel" icon in yer tool tray! )

...and speaking of *hippies* ;-} , a freak named Michael K. Weise, built a very creative program called The mkw Audio Compression Tool that Maki and I use that---among many other wonderful things---converts MP3s to SHN files! ( in a round-about way, first decoding to WAV format, then SHN ) It's free, but in the good ol' hippie way just asks for an occasional "donation" to keep the lights burning.

Ahh yes, I forgot that mkwACT decodes MP3 as well. That program is superior to using WinAmp or the like to do conversions. (Have you ever seen the sketch of Michael?? H-i-p-s-t-e-r!)

Glad you found out about etree Greenbelt, its a lot of fun (for me anyhow). I've configured a small FTP server, so if you want a login sometime, let me know. You can find my list of SHNs here.

If anyone in RotoGuru-land knows if its possible to defeat my 45k/s bandwidth cap, you'd be my hero for life. I'm currently wailing on my ISP's AUP, but I really want to bend it over a chair!

Kazaa Lite and WinMX are definitely the way to go right now. Plus, Kazaa Lite also has some links to cutting down on popups in general, and in particular a wonderful program called eDexter that actually replaces ads with generic graphics. Ads on the Net may not be dead, but I'm trying to kill them, as I'd rather do micropayments any day.

Kazaa Lite has no spyware either.

JayTDawg, you should get rid of all of it, except if you get rid of the Cydoor entries Kazaa wont work anymore and you'll have to re-install it. I recommend Kazaa Lite. Adaware finds one file in the Kazaa Lite directory, do NOT delete it. Its a dummy file, that tricks Kazaa into thinking that the Cydoor spyware is installed.
