0 Subject: ESPN's Hockey Playoff Challenge Strategy/Discusion

It seems that this year will be more challenging than last for drafting a team for this Game.

The Major significant difference will be that there will be daily repricing with what seems to be limitless trades.
Having this, along with option of renogotiating value of players will give higher roster value.
This make the game this year a little more like TSN's game.

Allthough an interesting SPIN that ESPN put on it is that it seems that player value will fluctuate due to performance not a buy/trades allgorithm.

I personally am going to take some time to study the matchups a bit before finallizing my team.

Feel free to post your Ideas suggestions.

Just a bit of clarification:
  • There will not be daily "repricing" in ESPN's FHLPC; individual player values will change weekly, each Monday throughout the playoffs.
  • You may change your line-up as often as you wish; however, your roster must be set and under the 50-point player value limit by 11:59PM PT to be considered valid and earn points for the following day's games.
  • The 50-point player value limit for each team does not increase ... think of it as a hard salary cap.
  • If you want to be competitive in this game, don't "finalize" a team now ... play the daily match-ups, especially during the first week of competition (before the player values increase).

I have a question.

Can the total "RV" of your team increase just like in smallworld? Or are we hard capped at the 50.0 throughout the season?

They say that every monday the player values will change according to playoff performances, etc. So let's say the total ammount of points my players now occupy after monday has risen to 65.0 due the changes. If i choose to sell those players the next day (in favor of new players who are playing vs. the old ones that don't), will my limit be set back to 50.0? Or will i now have a limit of 65.0 to work with?

If you have a player that does well and increases from say 5.1 to 5.7 on Monday you get to keep him on your roster for 5.1. If you sell him after the price change you will have to buy him back at 5.7.

The Dienasty:

The 50M player value limit is the same as a "hard cap" for your team. The Locked Value column on your roster page indicates the price at which you signed each player. Your team will not earn any points if the total Locked Value exceeds 50M.

The Market Value represents each player's current price if you want to acquire (or reacquire) him; it is the Market Value that will change each Monday. Your team's total Market Value can be higher than 50M.

After the weekly player value updates take place, check your roster for any athletes whose Market Value is below your team's Locked Value. Clicking on the "Renegotiate Value" link, under Options, will re-sign any such players on your roster at the new, lower Market Value price. (For example, if you have Patrick Roy "locked" at 6.0M and his "market" price dips to 5.9, you'll recover 0.1M toward your locked value/salary cap limit by renegotiating.)

Yep ... another infamous ESPN screw-up, locking the rosters six hours ahead of the deadline. Maybe, maybe one of the programmers is sober (on a Friday night?) and working on the problem. Maybe not. Nevertheless, it stinks.

Puckprophet: I tried going through our Gurupie "ESPN insider" first, but no response. So, I telephoned ESPN and talked with a gentleman named Scott who said he'd alert the web crew to the technical problem with FHLPC. He was optimistic that the roster glitch could be resolved before the deadline for Saturday's games.

Of course, if he lets us down ... I'll post his last name and the telephone number to ESPN on the FHLPC message board. (Nah ... not really ... but I'll be very disappointed if I have to settle for doughnuts instead of points.)

Not sure what you're asking, Puckprophet. Detroit doesn't play on Monday and if they don't get their act together, the Red Wings may not be around after Tuesday. The weekly player value updates force you to make a decision: keep someone at his current (locked) value on your team even though his team may be idle, or try to maximize the opportunity to collect points and have to downgrade at some positions. It's a no-brainer, for example, that the price for many Colorado players (especially Forsberg) will increase, based on production to date and the fact that the Avs have back-to-back games Monday/Tuesday.

Anyone you want to have on your team to "beat" Monday's price value update should be added to your roster by 11:59 PT Sunday night.

hasek was a bad example..., do you think force-berg would go up a mil or max out at 6.6 , audette is another to get a raise if he can do some more today...or johnson...

This is the first time ESPN is offering FHLPC as a free "daily roster" game (last year, picks locked for the first round, then at the beginning of the second round for the remainder of the playoffs). If we use similar daily roster games as barometers, Baseball Challenge price changes have been a maximum of +0.3/–0.3; for Gridiron Challenge (football), I believe it was +0.4/–0.4; in Virtual GM (basketball), the price swing has been +0.5/–0.5. Guess we'll all find out on Monday what to expect for FHLPC.

I purposely held on to a couple guys that didn't play today to keep them locked at their lower value. Turns out I could've played someone else (Allison)in their place. :(

More about the player value changes:

This is what has appeared on the front (home) page of FHLPC since game one of the playoffs:
New to this year's game is daily roster moves. Like Baseball Challenge and Virtual GM you are allowed to change your roster everyday throughout the NHL Postseason. Player values will update each Monday.

And this is what you'll now find on the "How to Play" page (scroll down to 3. ROSTER):
Unlike last year's game, you can change your roster for each gameday throughout the NHL postseason. The listed values will change following each round of the playoffs and are based on a combination of the players' season-to-date and projected playoff statistics according to the scoring system. (Until today, this page also indicated the player values would update each Monday.)

EIV (ESPN Internet Ventures) reserves the right to change these Official Rules at any time, in its sole discretion. That they do with great regularity ... and often without notice.

For those of you who can't update tomorrow's line-up after tonight's games, what are you planning?

Hope Montreal win and Pick only ISL/TOR players

or

Hope Boston win and pick from ISL/TOR/BOS/MTL
