0 Subject: Thank you Thibault -- Recap of a Disastrous Season

Posted by: The Left Wings
- [760719] Mon, Apr 15, 2002, 04:03

After finishing 50th in my rookie season, and then 48th in my sophomore season, I have had a rough third season in the SW hockey pool. I have basically wasted the first 2 months of the season, of which I bottomed out on Nov 25 when I ranked 20535th. Missing the Parrish train hurt.

Thanks to three 380+ SWP nights in the next 5 days, I began December ranking 9152nd. With some hard work (and procrastinating studying for exams), I climbed within 5000th by Christmas, and finished inside top 4000 on New Year's Eve.

But I started 2002 on the wrong foot by scoring only 500 SWP in the first week of the new year, and subsequently dropped all the way back to the 5000s, which is where I was all the way up to the Olympic Break.

However, things turned around big time after Team Canada won the gold medal. First day after the break, I ranked 5472nd. Perhaps because of the tighter schedule, I scored fewer than 100SWP in only 6 of the days. I went down in the standings on only 10 of the 48 days. On April 1, my team scored a season high 644SWP, two days after breaking my previous high by scoring 579SWP. I had the most SWP amongst all gurupies during those 5 days. Of course, finishing up the season by scoring more than 200 SWP 12 straight days helped a lot.

I broke 5000th on Feb 28, then broke 4000th on Mar 5, 3000th on Mar 14, 2000th on Mar 30 (the day with 579SWP), and finally, on the last day of the season, I broke top 1000, by finishing 933rd, thanks to the shutout by Thibault and the heroics of Numminen. And of course, Roger Neilson almost screwed me out of it by starting Hurme on his first game and Lalime on the second game.

Now, if only I can have a run like that earlier in the season... Ah well, at least I didn't finish in the 4-digits.

Best move of the season: Lalime->Thibault

PS: It's ok if you don't care. I just have this hobby of writing recaps for a lot of things that I do.

Nice come back in the end...

I finished 2080th (after cracking the top 2000 only 3 days ago). Note: I ran out of trades on 04/13, thus leaving me with a crappy last day of action . My first full season of Hockey, in the books.

I had a season high 11th place on Dec 22nd. But my january was awful, dropped from 32WWR to 270WWR from january 1st til the All Star-break. But after the Olympics I started climbing back and for the last month I've been in the top-100.

Don't be sad. It's not like you're missing out too much. Those stinking plastic water bottles and beer bottle cap openers... sheesh. The best I ever got from SW was a copy of NHL2000 along with an SW t-shirt and a SW cap in my rookie season. After that, they went into financial ruins and all those prizes from NBA and MLB pools were the same.

And when I said "stinking plastic water bottles", I meant it literally. You know that kind of plastic rubber smell? That's what's the inside of the bottles smell like.

I had two teams this year:

Team A finished 26th (and top's on the Philliephan standings & the Aussie Rules Division).

Team B finished 734 (and top's in an autodivision; big whoop).

I have finished in the top 100 a few times in hockey before, but never in the top 50. I am most enthused. My best finish was in baseball two years ago at 20th, so I have not bested my best, but I have to be quite pleased with this result.

I thought the game, as usual, was the best smallworld offers, and smallworld ran it much smoother this year than in prior years.

Had mucho fun, and will miss smallworld hockey, but I surely do love smallworld baseball. I will also miss the banter on these boards, but here's hoping that many of you are also participating in baseball...!

Hmmm...No need to complain. This was my best season: 62th in world rank and 1st in my division. Last year finished 500th and 2nd in division. (The players of the division have remained same)
My season high was near Christmas when I was 2nd. I remained in top ten quite a long time, but then by the awful performances from the end of January to the middle of February, I dropped somewhere near to 150th. Latest month was however good, and so on I succeeded to climb up to the 62th.
Nice game, but needs much time and concentration.

My final WWR last season was 1500. Managed to get up to 1691 (with a LOT of help from Numminen's 111 last night!) to finish the season after a horrible 2002. From January on, I just seemed to find every bad move to make. Oh well, there's always next season!

Well, I have to say that I now enjoy the game of hockey. For years, I would ignore the sport, saying it was boring and had no redeeming value. I can't wait for the playoffs. As for my TSN team, my rookie season went well.

Congratulations Walk my man! Nice finish. I think it was the wake up call I gave you when I was within 1,000 points of you after making up 1,000 in a short period of time. You proceeded to put on the after-burners from there and left me in the dust!

I am pleased with my finish this year in hockey. I didn't participate much at the beginning while football was still going, but I tried to make a run when 2002 started. I went from 22nd in the Rotoguru Aussie Rules division (over 20,000 WWR) and made it as high as fifth a few days ago. I finished at 6th in the division, and 1,598 WWR. Final stats:

Team: Willix Wingers

WWR: 1,598

See everyone over on the baseball boards!

Willix my man! Finishing 6th in our highly competitive division, while living in quasi-hockey town FLA is quite a feat.

Thanks. 4th year playing smallworld hockey. I love the fantasy hockey game, but have never quite had the streak I had over the last two months of the season. It'll happen again at about the same time they say that asteroid is supposed to come crashing into earth...

;-)

Speak to ya on the baseball boards.

Don't know if it's because of last minute trades or what but looking at peoples' cash left at the end it seems to confirm that this year money wasn't so important as last year. I've had 9+ million TSND extra cash for almost the last 30 days, due to bad trades or cheap players..?

After an piss-poor draft I managed to scratch and claw my way up to a WR of 1450. If only the season ended two weeks ago. I had a great time, learned a lot about the game, and improved my ranking quite considerably as compared to last year. Congrats to WALK for winning our division, and thanks to all for an exciting season. Wait till next year.......

Interesting side note: last year I finished the year ranked 5179th with 31,613 points. This year I finished ranked 2636th with 31,643 points. For those who are not mathmatically inclined, 30 additional points this year led to an additional 2543 World Ranking points. Who said scoring is down in the NHL :-)

Dude, scoring IS down, and so fewer people score more than you. That's why you are higher in ranking for virtually the same amount of points.

well.. it was a very successful year for me, and i think i'm gonna have to anoint todd bertuzzi as my team's mvp. although, the fearsome foursome of vacisek, o'neill, kapanen, and francis proved very potent early in the season. having pronger for his stretch of great games really helped too. overall, i feel i played the game well, but made some poor trade decisions. i played the statistics a bit too heavily and would trade out of strong players for weaker players who happened to play a couple of extra games. not necassarily flawed logic, perhaps.. but i didn't compensate for the value of the trade.

i actually think i could have played better were i to re-do this season. i was able to climb to #1 in the ultimate game the day after the olympic break (which really made me mad at first, because had i hit it the game-day beforehand, i would have been $2500 richer. But i can't complain..) i didn't let go of that #1 for the rest of the way. All of this without ever owning iginla, or theodore.

well.. i look forward to next season, and i'll be trying my luck during the playoffs to see just how much of a fluke this season really was for me.
