Adam Oates goes to the Ducks. Paul Kariya might finally have a decent center after all these years. Problem is, he needs a right winger now, and Jeff Friesen is a left winger.

Yesterday, Berezin was traded from the Habs to the Hawks for a 4th round pick. You'd think the Habs could get more than that.

Guerin signs with the Stars for 5 yrs 45 million. After seeing Leaf mgmt talking about deals they have on the go and that Kasp and Holik had other issues (ie. new york). I think it is hard to get american born players to play for a Canadian team, especially the buds (ie. guerin).

Guerin would of done well in Toronto, may he break his leg in the first game for dallas.

Guerin to the Stars for $9 mill/season.

The guy had 66 points last year. 32nd overall in scoring in a year that was the lowest for individual scoring in a long time.

I know 41 goals is a fair number but still - that is a career year for him. Is the madness ever going to end?

even taking a look at the mid-level teams that are losing these free agents and you can see the affect of the NHL's fiscal state on the game... where will Boston be without Guerin and Dafoe? Pittsburgh without Lang? Vancouver without Cassels and Lachance? (there are a ton more examples to be sure) the distance is sure spreading between the have and have-not teams

Yes, salary cap is needed. Hopefully it becomes a reality and hopefully it is an effective one - not one that has a limit that most teams won't reach anyways.

And it also has to be as air tight as possible, without the loopholes that exist today (an example being the trades of Richter and Joseph for draft picks in lieu of compensation).

Trouble is, I don't think the league will be able to easily implement a cap. The union sounds like it will never go for it.

thats the unions job -- but, on the other hand, its Bettman's to make this league interesting for all of the cities involved, not just those with huge budgets. Its a huge clash and I dont think Bettman can afford to blink on this one -- No more hockey without a cap.

Well that's what I mean though. Of course it is the union's job to not go for a cap and keep the doors to limitations for the players closed.

But even if Bettman doesn't blink, the union may not either.

I hope that something is worked out and a sensible cap will be implemented. Although I think there are other things that would need to be done besides a cap. That's only part of the solution.

Richter goes back to the Rangers. So the Rangers are supposed to give the Oilers something. I wonder what the "future considerations" were when they traded him to the Oilers?

Dallas gets Scott Young, reuniting him with Pierre Turgeon, who helped him scored 40 goals a couple of seasons ago. So, Dallas just bought 40 goals.

Well, Dallas bought a potential 40 goals. Maybe they only bought 19 like last year ;)

In all likelyhood Dallas will rebound though - they won't miss the playoffs.

And, as much as I hate to say it, the Rangers have to make the playoffs this year with all the players they have - don't they? (Although I would have thought they would have the last 3 years)

Canucks are done this year...with Cassels gone, all the oppositions checkers will focus on Naslund and Bertuzzi...leaving who exactly to score goals? The Sedins? Linden? yea right. Defence is weak with LaChance gone. Goaltending average. Prediction: unless they sign someone better than Moss - 9th-10th spot.

they'll stick Young with Turgeon to start for a second-line resembling St.Louis' first 2 years ago.

not hard to pick apart Vancouver's roster... the defense pairings look quite sad

jovanovski, ohlund, sopel, helmer, baron... the rest are minor leaguers (not that the last three aren't)

I think in the end Iginla will stay in Calgary, and Dafoe may be headed for Philly.....but who really knows.

On Amonte, I hope the Leafs do sign him instead of again being close to signing a big name....Personally, I think the Leafs made a mistake by signing Belfour instead of Dafoe.

Yea the Leafs messed up. I think Belfour is decent but too old. They could have had Dafoe for much less and for longer. I don't think Amonte will sign in Toronto because the top players don't seem to like coming to Canada for various fiscal reasons.

New Jersey and Anaheim pull of a huge deal

Sykora, Commodore, J-F Damphousse and a prospect to Anaheim for Friesen and Tverdovsky

Anaheim gives up a lot in two hugely gifted players

Looks like a pretty good deal for the Ducks. They finally have one decent line for the first time in franchise history.
Kariya-Rucchin-Selanne? Rucchin's a joke. If they had somebody semi-decent, that season when Selanne and Kariya finished 2-3 in scoring would have been different with them finishing 1-2.

Kariya-Oates-Sykora could be deadly.
However, they'll still be a one-line team.
Perhaps they'll split them up in two lines.
But Kariya MUST play with Oates... He desperately needs him.

They may be gifted but they are under-achieving up to this point. Especially Tverdovski. Maybe Friesen hasn't had enough time to prove himself but Tverdovski sure has. Besides, at least Anaheim is finally attempting to do something to get their team on the right track. It was obvious that the personel they had wasn't working so why sit on that knowing it won't...?

I dunno about you but a Kariya/Oates/Sykora line looks pretty scary.

The Canucks added Nolan Baumgartner today too. You know, the famous draft pick that was involved in both the Sundin-Clark deal and the 6-for-1 Lindros deal. It got traded one more time to the Caps before they finally used it.

$6 million/year. That's lower than I would have thought too. Not that I think he is worth that much or more - just that the Rangers probably offered him alot more money than that.

The Western conference gets that much tougher - Vancouver is in deep trouble this year unless they can do something other than sit around and watch.

The Western Conference is going to be a battle this year.

Detroit, Dallas, Colorado, St.Louis, San Jose, Phoenix are all pretty saound choices to make the playoffs.

Anaheim is much improved - although not neccessarily a playoff team yet, they will be significantly harder to play against.

So that leaves which two teams out of Edmonton, Chicago, LA, Vancouver and on an outside chance Calgary, Anaheim or even Minnesota to make the playoffs?

If I had to chose right now based on current rosters I'd have to pick Edmonton and LA.

Vancouver is a young team and will get better every year. Cloutier can only improve, Bertuzzi looks like one of the best forwards in the league near the end of the season, and if Naslund can stay healthy, it'll make a big difference. Cassells leaving will definetly hurt them, but look for players like the Sedins to step up next season..

Being from Edmonton, I cant really say anything bad about the Oilers.. Dopita will help so much as a 2nd line center, something the Oilers just couldnt find last season, and expect Dopita and York to have chemistry on that second line. Comrie will probably score anywhere from 30-40 goals next year if Ryan Smyth can manage to stay healthy. Expect the top line to get much more points this year and Smyth getting hurt put a big dent in that line for a couple months... That top line had the most points up to where Smyth was injured. Expect Smyth to have his best season next year.

Chicago will definetly not repeat last year's performance, as their top player (Amonte) is gone, and their next best forward (Zhamnov) is injury-prone and was very lucky to play so much last season. Housley, their best D-man is 38 and probably wont do as well as his last 2 seasons with this club. Boris Mironov, their second top d-man is currently injred (Not sure how long), but that might harm the defence. Mark Bell and Kyle Calder probably wont get as much points as last season as they faded slowly last season and were unnoticed the last few months. Berezin, Nylander & Sullivan are my bets to be the top 3 point producers on this team next season.

Colorado will have no problem rising to the top next season, as Forsberg, possibly their best player, is back from injury. Him, Drury & Reinprecht will no doubt be the league's top second line next season as Drury always kicks ass when he plays with Forsberg. Hejduk & Tanguay will likely improve next season as their experience in the NHL grows, and Patrick Roy will have another outstanding season.

Dallas may be the most improved Western conference team next season with thier addition of Billy Guerin. Modano and him may be one of the best 1-2 punches since Kariya-Selanne. With Lehtinen and Modano already having good chemistry, there's no telling how much points this top line will score with Guerin. Turco will have his best season this year. Expect Morrow and Young to click on the second line next season.

Phoenix will probably do better next season if Burke stays in his groove. With the addition of Amonte, will wil probably be put on a line with Briere which will kick bum.. If Savage can get his act together and play like he used to, he could easily do some damage. Kolanos, Radivojevic, Vaananen & Briere will all have strong seasons with all the potential they have.

Here are my predictions in the west:

1.Colorado
2.San Jose
3.Detroit
4.Phoenix
5.Dallas
6.Edmonton
7.Vancouver
8.LA
9.St.Louis
10.Chicago

Ira, I agree with the assesment of the Oilers. They will not take a step backwards to say the least. I think York is a super young talent and will only improve.

Dopita is a better addition than most people think. He was playing behind too many players in Philly and will see a huge rise in ice-time.

Their only weakness up front that I can see is right wing, where after Carter it gets fairly thin. But I predict a playoff berth from them.

As far as Vancouver goes, I think the loss of Cassels will hurt more than people think as well. Even though he missed almost 30 games last year, they don't have anyone who can really match his offensive output. Henrik Sedin, imo, is not ready to take on the role of a #2 center. And that makes things very thin down the middle.

Now that Bertuzzi had his breakout year, everyone and their dog will send out their top checking line against him and Naslund/Morrison which will mean secondary scoring will be vital. And even though the Canucks scored the most goals in the NHL last year, the top line did most of the scoring and their secondary scoring was spotty at best and they have subtracted Cassels and not replaced him with anyone.

I think a key to this year doesn't lie with Bertuzzi and Naslund, but how a player like Hlavac can respond to his sub-par performance last year. Earlier he was touted as a possible 30-40 goal man, but it remains to be seen whether or not he can reach that potential. Also, maybe Peter Shaefer is worth trying harder to sign this year - and despite his small stature, he does have good jets and may boost the offence somewhat.

Defence is also a problem. After Jovanovski and Ohlund, the defence is very suspect. Baron isn't terrible but he isn't a #3 defenceman on most teams. Sopel has his moments but again, is at best a 5th-6th defenceman on most other teams. The only hope I see for improvement in their own system is with Bryan Allen. And even he has been wishy-washy so far in his short career.

They have to make some kind of signing here before training camp. Someone like Slegr or Kravchuk - although not great defenceman by any means - would at least be some kind of attempt to shore up the blueline at a minimal cost.
