Alas my strangers are awful. Holik has it down when he says they cannot win without a "defense first" philosophy. Unfortunately, Trottier could not establish that system.
Unfortunately for Trottier, the problems lie deeper, namely in the formerly illustrious Glen Sather. He will have failed to reach the playoffs for 3 consecutive years, after this season. This will be the same as his predecessor Ron Low, who was fired for his 3-peat. Sather should then also be let go. A team with the highest payroll, yet lacking tough defensemen, capable wingers, and young talent cannot win. This is as much as a fantasy team as we have in our TSN game. Pathetic.
I feel for the likes of Mess, Leetch and some others, but unfortunately Sather could not tackle the very tricky task of "winning now" by assembling a hodge-podge of talent. They have figured this out beautifully in Detroit, but not in NYC. Ugh.
There is a great article about this (much of which I have lifted from) in today's NY Times by a long-standing cover write named Joe Lapointe:
Sather's NY Legacy
You may need to register to read it, but registration is free. I can copy and paste lateron if need be. A very good, but harsh article.
