Hello guys. I've been lurking around this place for awhile now, and decided to get some advice. I'm in a division (Ultimate) with divisionleader "chester" (the same as chestergreat here on the forum??), unlucky for me he's often in top ten total. Anyway, I started out good, led the divison, got as high as 36 at most, and ever since then it's gone downhill. Lately it's been improving and yesterday I had fifth highest score. But I'd like to get some advice as what to do to improve more. I don't hope to win the divison, but at least enter top 100 again. Here's my team "avalanchez":

C
Straka PIT 5500
Nieuwendyk NJ 3740
Blake NYI 890

W
Bertuzzi VAN 9100
Jagr WAS 7840
Elias NJ 4920
Miller WAS 1210

D
Gonchar WAS 5390
MacInnis STL 5370
Ozolinsh ANA 2920

G
Broduer NJ 8760
Hackett BOS 1970

I got 7170 cash left, and 6 trades from today. Total rostervalue is 64820, which is highest in my division and my only advantage. But I have failed to use this advantage so far. What should I do? I plan to get into Turco soon. I'm finally happy with D, I've had lots of cheap ones before, and many has been great like Rachunek, Boyle, Salo etc, but now I have three studs at D. Pricy, but somehow I got to use those money. Miller and Jagr is staying for now obviously. Bertuzzi is my oldest player as I've kept him for about two months now. Every time I'm about to sell him he produce points, but his time may be up. Both NJ players I aquried a few games ago. I've been thinking of selling them as they did little until yesterday, but now I'll give them a few more games. I've had Straka for a long time too, never sold him when Mario went down. Afterall he was one of a few Pens players that actually kept producing, so I don't understand why everybody dropped him. Blake is probably the one I'll sell first. He's good but I should use my money. So, should I upgrade to Mario via selling Blake and Bertuzzi? Or what should I do? Believe me, I've used every little grey cell I got in vain, whether it's bad luck or a mental block (cause I usually do much better then this) things haven't been working.

How about looking at schedules and trading players (even thought they may be producing) when they go on 1 in 4's. That is the strategy I take. AS well you have quite a few of what I would call differiential picks. It is fine to have straka, or joe or blake, but remember..the real studs for center would be thornton, forsberg and lemiuex and lately koivu. just my 2 cents.

Well, you have done well to be within and around the top 100 all season long. Kudos to you. I do not predict you will get a whole bunch of advice here that you have not already considered, but here goes:

1. I would not manage my team to win the division as much as to get the best overall WWR I can. They are likely one and the same though in terms of modus operandi.

2. I like Bertuzzi, too, but that is an awful lot of money to spend on someone who does not score heads and tails above the rest. I think for about the same production, you can go for someone cheaper, say Hejduk or Tkachuk.

3. I think many of the folks on the boards have spent their money on centers, whereas you are spending your money on defense (and wingers, to some degree). I would certainly not advise you moving Gonchar, he's on fire (and I am still in the cheapie defense shop, even though my rosters are $3MM richer than yours), but two stud defensemen seems like a lot of bear for $64MM. Clearly, you will have some more spending power when you start using your $7M in cash and sell Brodeur for Turco.

4. I do not necessarily think that Straka is scoring like a potent center, but I do not have the stats to back it up off hand. I spend some of your money and opt for guys like Thornton and Forsberg (or Lemieux) instead of Straka and Nieuwendyk. Sakic is due back in a week or so, too. You may need some money from MacInnis or Gonchar to make both of these moves.

Otherwise, we all need to keep our eyes on the Hackett situation in Boston. While he is certainly a great value, at this stage of the season, it's more about consistent points from goalies who play a lot and win a lot. I need to see more about how Boston is going to use Hackett and Shields. Brodeur, on the other hand, plays 90% of his games. Guys like Hackett (cheap, good team, good performers) are must have's for the first half of the season, but as we go into the last third, the hottest and winningest goalies pay more dividends. Still, there is some time to wait and see on this...

I imagine you will get some other posts that say something different, and again, you will have to decide what makes the most sense. Clearly, you have done a good job so far.

Good luck avalanchez.

With your cash situation and the fact that you have a few cheapies on your roster, I would suggest the following as advice:

1) Keep the two cheapies that you have for now (Blake and Miller)
2) When schedules are average to good and these players are healthy always have the following: Mario, Thornton, Turco, Jagr, Nasland(if money permits)
3) Keep Broduer for now, like walk says he plays 90% of NJ's games. Get Turco from Hackett on the 8th.
4) I hate making defensive trades, so unless you need money for any of the other trades, I'd hold. If you do trade down consider Hamrlik or Tarnstrum from Gonchar or Big Al.

To reiterate some of what the others have said. Keep your eye on schedules and be sure not to hold through week schedules (Bertuzzi has a big hole coming up on the 8th 3 games in 10 days). Hejduk on the other hand has a great schedule through at least March 2. If you were going to go Bertuzzi -> Hejduk I think I would wait until after Vancouver plays Buffalo on the 7th.

It's hard to add much to the great advice already given. However, one I notice is that you claim to have a great total roster value advantage over your competitors, but you are wasting that advantage by having over 7 million sitting in cash. Use that money to upgrade a player or two. You don't have much money tied up at Center - this might be a good place to start. You won't make points with the dollars left sitting in unused cash. Convert that wasted cash to roster value on the ice. I'd much rather have the likes of Forsberg, Thornton and Modano on my team than Straka, Nieuwendyk and Blake. You can't quite swing three studs at center but you can afford two of the three.

One way to look at cash, is that the stud players are generally priced between 5-6 pts/game/$M so that $7 million dollars sitting in cash could be converted to 35-42 pts/gm. That's the advantage that roster value on the ice gives you. Get that money working for you.

Hey Avalanchez . . . nice night. 622 points ain't whistling Dixie!

Yes . . I'm in your division . . .and since I only got 86 TSNPs last night you can see how standings can change quickly. Your team looks prety solid right now. The only advice I would give is the same as some have already said. The $$$ advantage you have isn't an advantage unless you use it.
I've been away for 8 days while on vacation and haven't had a good look at the schedule (and I've lost some ground while not making any moves the last week and a half . . til today) . . but I think using another $3.5M at Center and $3.5 at wing may give you a little more punch. (How about Straka->Sundin, Elias->Palffy)

Having said that . . I can't really fault any of your current picks.
