ESPN link

The dirt - Kovalev was sent to New York with center Dan Lacouture and defensemen Janne Laukkanen and Mike Wilson for wingers Rico Fata and Mikael Samuelsson, defensemen Joel Bouchard and Richard Lintner and cash

as a Rangers fan, I dont know, I dont think they gave up any potential superstars. Bouchard has played really well, Samuelsson has been solid, especially lately, Fata, I dont really know much about besides he's fast, Lintner is a body. Who knows how much cash.

Actually I bet they gave up Samuelsson had to go because Kovalev had to be #27 :)

I guess as long as they resign Kovalev, I'd say its a good deal for the Rangers. Still aint making the playoffs though :(

Yes, good deal for our rangers. We did NOT give up Lundmark!

Except the rangers will curse Kovalev again. Hopefully, he skates with Nedved and Dvorak. Speed, speed, and more speed.

Now I won't need to worry about finding enough roster value to pair up Lemieux and Kovalev. Will Kovalev be as productive without Lemieux and will Lemieux be as productive without Kovalev?

Actually, Walk, what would you think about the possibility now of turning around and trading Kovalev in a few weeks?

When they finally realize they ain't making the playoffs, the demand may get higher, teams won't have to give up cash, the Rangers can actually get some talent back as opposed to Pittsburgh who traded more for cash purposes.

Richard as for Kovalev, I'll try my best to quote Walk, who I spoke to a few minutes ago....

"Kovalev with Mario or Kovalev with Nedved... From a fantasy perspective who would you rather him paired with"

I'd have to guess his production will go down slightly.. He is a great goal scorer and has the bonus of being on a new team. (it almost always seems like players traded to new teams in midseason start off strong.. Just a theory of mine)

That said, I'm taking wait and see attitude on this one...

Hey J. You are right in that they will not make the playoffs, but Sather will not admit he made a mistake. He will dump Leetch and maybe another older veteran instead. A shame. I love Leetch.

Kovalev is still young. He actually has a ring with the rangers, too. Our only cup in the last 50 years.

I watched MANY a ranger game when young Alex was with the rangers circa early 90s. Loaded with talent, strong, and fast, but he stickhandled too much. The coaching staff tried to do "tough love" with him benching him many times and that only made things worse. They traded him for Nedved ironically(another dude that they had traded to the penguins only to flourish there, 47 goals, but not here in NY) and Kovalev proceeded to grow and grow and grow in Pittsburgh, away from the stifling media and coaching scrutiny of NYC.

I do not fear he will succumb to this pressure the second time around, and I long to see a powerplay with Bure, Kovalev and Nedved/Lindros, but unfortunately, the rangers are too weak on the wings and too weak at defense to turn things around. Kovalev is a start, and if Leetch comes back even better, but we need 2 big and strong defensemen who guard the net, not rush the puck, to round things out.

J.. that is an interesting scenario.. Surely the Rangers won't make the playoffs.. If they realize this before the trade deadline, they could get some young talent and maybe some draft picks... which would affectively make the trade... No name talent and cash for some real up and comers and draft picks.. Now that sounds like a better trade to me...

Also, Richard, regarding Mario's fantasy value downgrade. I believe he kicked major buttocks this year thus far with and without Kovalev. Mario on the powerplay with Straka, Tarnstrom, me and my 2 year old boy would still offer some serious merit.

I forgot - Insane Trade by both Teams

Rangers get expensive Winger in Kovalev and well some depth players
penguins get some cheap or younger guys, well and Lintner who is said to be signed a contract in Germany for next 2 years (maybe he has a clause for the NHL)

Imho the Financial Situation for the Pens is much worse than reported, since they could have gotten more for Kovalev alone, if they wait til the deadline. Anyway a strange trade !

Any new news on Straka's injury? I was planning on putting Mario on all my teams this week but if Pens lose Straka as well, I'll have to rethink my plan.

Kovalev had a pretty decent season (32 goals and 76 points in just 67 games) last season when Mario played just 25 games.
I think Kovalev is a good enough player on his own.

It's a salary dump. It's not that you can't afford the 4.6 million, but it's the 8-9 mil after arbitration. We couldn't let him go like Robert Lang for nothing.

LaCuoutre wasn't getting much time and the other 2 are up and down from the minors I think. At least we got some NHL ready players instead of the scrubs we got for Jagr.

If the Pens get hot (I doubt it) they can still make a deal to get a cheap scoring threat at the deadline, if Mario thinks they have a shot. But in reality, they don't...and we're waiting for the lockout.

Penguins Report (02/11):

LW Martin Straka (hamstring) and G Jean-Sebastien Aubin (hand) were the only players to sit out the Penguins' 55-minute workout at Mellon Arena yesterday. Coach Rick Kehoe said he expects both players to participate in practice today, but that he plans to hold Straka out of the Penguins' game against Ottawa tomorrow so that his injury, sustained during the first period of the Penguins' 5-2 victory in Boston Saturday, will have time to heal.

Hark baby! Yeah, it was a salary dump. Plain and simple. However, the rich get poorer here, as my NYR will still not make the playoffs and have to shell out even more $$ for Alexei. Hey, Sather is fighting for his 3 jobs right now. No playoffs, no jobs.

Well the news of this trade has even shocked us down here. Does this mean that Mario will have to play until he's 50 to keep the Pens viable?
At least that would give Walk jr some time to develop his slap shot.

holla what an upbeat crowd !

ehm hello Bookie, hello Christine, hello Walk, hello Frank, hello Gurupies

Humour hard to find these days as we (old Europeans) are quickly graded down to the status of caveman.

Still Walk, if all things fail the NYPD can arrest the evil Senators from despotic Ottawa (known for their mass destruction of NHL opponents) and raid their valuable resources. This would account for a better team and one less opponent to beat out for the playoffs. Isles you're next !

The only thing left for the Rangers to do is to incorporate pinstripes into their uniforms.

The Rangers Front Office wouldn't know what to do with draft picks. Draft Beer maybe...

as much as I like the Rangers and hate the Yankees, the only similarity here is the amount of money being spent. The other NHL teams should be thanking the Rangers. The Rangers take over the hill all stars and pay them tons of money. All this trade does is make it so that Alexei Kovalev will never again be a productive player. While the Yankees actually use their money and win championships! Wow, there's a good idea, maybe the Rangers should just go and buy the actual Stanley Cup! I wonder if that costs more than $80million?

The thinking here is that the Pens had to settle for the guys they got because the Rangers were the only team will to pony up the cash AND absorb the contracts of Laukanen and Wilson. If it had been a straight salary dump of Kovalev then the likely would have gotten a much better package. Essentially it was addition by subtraction with the two defensemen.

The Maple Leafs may have offered better players for Kovalev, but when you add cash and other contracts into the mix it was probably more than the Leafs wanted to absorb.

It will be interesting to see Mario's production the rest of the way. The one thing he hasn't shown in his comeback is the ability to produce his typical numbers without either Jagr or Kovalev on his line. I think he's going to slip quite a bit, maybe to the point of losing the scoring race.

The other worry is will his heart be in it for the rest of the year. He hinted today that he's only taking his playing career on a year to year basis, which is a big step back from when he was saying he'd like to play another 2-3 years earlier this season, when things were clicking well. I think if you don't see typical Lemieux numbers these last 27 games, then he'll likely retire.

I've lost all respect for Mario .

whats next , is he going to pimp himself out to the highest bidder for the playoffs ?

he took the ca$h rather than opting for a few talented youngsters.

Fata and Samuelsson dont add up to Kovalev who is one of the best in the game .

you'd think Lundmark would be a guy Mario would have insisted upon being in this deal .

Lundmark,Dvorak would have been something fans outside of the big apple could have accepted .

Penguins Report 02/12/03 (italics mine):

The Penguins will proceed with plans to distribute Joe Mullen bobblehead dolls when Ottawa visits Mellon Arena tonight, but there is a twist: Team officials, concerned about disgruntled fans using them as projectiles, will hand them out as patrons leave the arena, rather than when they are entering. About 4,000 tickets remain for the game. The Penguins plan to proceed with an Alexei Kovalev bobblehead doll promotion March 6, when Carolina will visit.

From today's NY Post:
Tonight, facing (once-and-future Ranger coach?) Mike Keenan and the Panthers, Kovalev will likely open on the right side with Petr Nedved in the middle and Ronald Petrovicky on the left. At least that's the way they skated yesterday.

I'm thinking Nedved may be a good pickup now...

Are they sure the Kovalev bobbleheads are a good idea? They should ship those to the dump, where the New Jersey Devils 2000-01 Stanley Cup champions, San Francisco Giants 2002 and New York Yankees 2001 World Series champions caps had gone.

Kovalev was switched to Messier and Lundmark midway through the game because Sather didn't like how Messier's line looked. He also played a point on the PP. They interviewed Bure on the pre-game show, he said he doesn't know when he'll be back; they showed how his right knee snapped just skating around in practice.

Well, it's not looking good for Mario and Co, Walk and his son might have to help on the PP after all. Reading the Pit papers it sounds bleak - Mario skated with Samuelsson and McKenna; who's he going to pass to? They said Mario himself didn't look good. Straka is out at least for this weekend; things might improve some when he returns. I'm thinking it's time to sell Mario and Tarnstrom...Maybe wait till after the NYR game tomorrow - then the schedule becomes bad.

So, the 3HM might have to be modified to Forsberg, Thornton, Modano.

Yeah, I was watching the ranger game when the announcers mentioned Bure's right knee buckling during practice. He really needs to rest it until next year with strong rehab in between. Anything else and he risk having surgery #8 sooner rather than later. Since Pavel and moi are currently tied at 7 surgeries each (and he makes just a tad bit more than I do, so I have nothing of which to boast), I say he should know better and call it quits for winter/spring '03. Ranger mgmt wants him back, 'cause no playoffs means Sather is fired.

Mario is going to have to go to Thornton, I believe. He may get some points tomorrow against my NYR, but the Devils will surely stifle the penguins the next night.
