FYI. In case you have Weight he might sit a game according to Coach Quenneville.

St. Louis improved to 4-0-2 in its last six games and won despite losing top playmaker Doug Weight, who did not return after being cut below the nose when he was struck by a puck with eight minutes left in the second period.

Following the game, coach Joel Quenneville said Weight will be re-evaluated when the team returns to St. Louis, but probably won't play in the Blues' next game against Philadelphia on Thursday.

Weight, who appeared woozy when helped off the ice, was hurt when he leaped in an attempt to bat down Biron's clearing shot. He was playing his second game after missing two after he hurt his ankle in last week's NHL All-Star game

From ESPN.COM

DALLAS -- Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco was listed as week-to-week Wednesday, a day after he injured his ankle against Carolina.

"He will be re-evaluated next week to where he is at,'' said Stars spokeman Rob Schichili.

Could just be semantics, but this sounds worse than "day to day". More like he could be out for a while. Sprains are tricky injuries. They often feel better before they are fully healed.

Well, while that sucks for the Dallas Stars, thats good news for us TSN owners. We already have a good option in Giguere, and when Turco comes back he should be back around 3.5 mil.

FROM THURSDAY'S DALLAS MORNING STAR

Stars' Turco to miss at least one week
02/12/2003

By MIKE HEIKA / The Dallas Morning News

The Stars have faced injuries to key forwards and defensemen this season and responded well. But their depth could now receive its greatest test of the year as goalie Marty Turco is out for at least a week and is being listed as "week to week" after sustaining an ankle injury Tuesday in a 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

As is the tradition in hockey, the team was somewhat hush-hush on specifics of the injury Wednesday, choosing not to release the location of the bone or ligament damaged and also choosing to stay away from a strict schedule of recovery. GM Doug Armstrong said the team had a day off Wednesday and would give more specifics Thursday.

What is known is that the team plans to recall Corey Hirsch from its American Hockey League affiliate in Utah and plans to go with backup Ron Tugnutt as the No. 1 goalie for the near future.

"I'm not excited about Marty being injured, but I'm ready for the opportunity," Tugnutt said. "Part of my job has been preparing myself for something like this."

Tugnutt was acquired in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets during the summer as an insurance policy for Turco, who is in his first season as a No. 1 goalie. Tugnutt, 35, has played no fewer than 42 games in any of the past five seasons and understands the pressure of being a No. 1 goalie.

"He's an experienced player who has served this role in the past, so this is really nothing new to him," Armstrong said.

Turco said he caught a skate blade in a rut in the ice when he was playing the puck behind the net midway through the second period. He played the remaining 10 minutes, but did not return after the intermission.

Coach Dave Tippett said the team was simply being "cautious" with Turco's injury.

Tugnutt took over with the Stars down, 1-0, made six saves in the third period and overtime and won the game to go 8-3-2 for the season. He has a 2.29 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage.

Turco leads the NHL in GAA and also has the top save percentage among No. 1 goalies. In his first season as a No. 1, Turco's 1.77 GAA, .931 save percentage and 25-9-10 record have him as one of the top three favorites to contend for the Vezina Trophy as the best goalie in the league.

He is also on a 14-game unbeaten streak, which ties Don Beaupre (1985-86) for the franchise record.

While the Stars did not seem panicked Wednesday, ankle injuries can be a problem for goalies. The Blues' Brent Johnson and the Coyotes' Sean Burke each have missed more than two months with ankle injuries this season.

"Olaf Kolzig left last night's game with only 1:25 left, due to a neck and shoulder injury, reports the Washington Post.
He was run over in the crease by Tampa's Ben Clymer on the Lightning's 3rd goal, and had to leave the game. Kolzig, who we are quite certain has no medical degree, does not believe there are concussion issues with respect to the injury. Consider him day-to-day for now."

Kubina has a baaad headache (TBO.com, Feb. 20)

TAMPA - Pavel Kubina was a surprise scratch Wednesday after complaining of headaches and fatigue two days after he was run into the boards by Washington's Peter Bondra.

Though the team is not calling it a concussion, Kubina said he has been told to keep his activities to a minimum and will be evaluated today before the team leaves for Carolina.

"I started sweating [Wednesday] afternoon for no reason," Kubina said. "I'm just sore in my neck and I just feel tired."

To combat one less defenseman, RW Ben Clymer, a converted defenseman, took some shifts on the blue line and handled some of Kubina's duties as one of the point men on the power play.

Hejduk left last night's game in Pittsburgh with an abdominal injury. RotoTimes said it is not serious, but the Denver Post said he had a similar injury last year that led to mucho time off.

From Today's Denver Post:

Injury all too familiar for Hejduk
By Adrian Dater
Denver Post Sports Writer

Friday, February 21, 2003 - PITTSBURGH - Just like last season at around this time, Milan Hejduk was knocked out of the lineup Thursday night with what the Colorado Avalanche said is a minor rib injury. The injury is in a bad area for the red-hot Avs winger.

Hejduk missed most of the final third of the regular season last year with what turned out to be a torn abdominal muscle. He returned in the playoffs, but was ineffective.

Hejduk, who scored Colorado's second goal in its 5-2 victory over the Penguins, left in the second period. The Avs first said Hejduk would return in the third period, but revised the prognosis a short time later.

The loss of Hejduk could be a serious blow to the Avs. His goal against the Penguins was his 33rd of the season, third-highest in the NHL. Dean McAmmond replaced Hejduk on the first line with Peter Forsberg and Alex Tanguay and responded with two goals.

From Today's Rocky Mountain News:
Win equates to loss
McAmmond fills in for injured Hejduk by scoring 2 goals

By Rick Sadowski, Rocky Mountain News
February 21, 2003

"I don't think it's too bad," Avalanche coach Tony Granato said. "I think it's a pulled muscle somewhere in the rib area. Sure, we would have liked to have played him through there. If it was a playoff game, we probably would keep him on the bench. But it was sore enough that we thought the best thing was to play it on the safe side and send him in. He went and got treatment, and we'll see what he's like in the morning."

Turco Update from today's Dallas Star Telegraph:

Injury update

Coach Dave Tippett said that injured goalie Marty Turco and wing Brenden Morrow will not accompany the team on the road trip, but that he expects both to begin practicing when the Stars return Saturday.

Tippett did not say when they would rejoin the lineup.

Tippett also said that defenseman Darryl Sydor, who sat out Friday's 2-2 tie with Phoenix because of a sprained shoulder, will be able to play tonight.

That would give the Stars seven defensemen. Tippett said he "will try to keep everybody involved" and dole out playing time according to matchups.

I guess I won't pick him up quite yet.

Blues call up Sanford

The Blues made their much-anticipated move to shake up their goaltending on Tuesday and the team's new goalie is ... Curtis Sanford.

Sanford, who has spent most of the season with the Blues' Worcester farm team, joined the team in practice Tuesday and coach Joel Quenneville said it was "more than likely'' that Sanford would start in the Blues' next game, against Edmonton on Thursday.

"We felt we wanted to shake things up,'' Quenneville said. "We wanted to make a change.''

The decision to call up Sanford from Worcester became prescient about 20 minutes into practice when goalie Brent Johnson left the ice with a groin strain. Johnson went to the training room to have it looked at and then left to see a doctor.

For the immediate future, the Blues will carry three goalies on their roster, and how long Sanford stays will depend on how well he plays. The Blues were pleased with how Sanford played earlier in the season during three emergency appearances and liked how he had been doing in Worcester.

Peter Forsberg hurt his left calf muscle in last night's game and will not practice today, reports the Denver Post.
The injury was as a result of a slash by the Oilers' Steve Staios, and makes Forsberg questionable for tomorrow's game against the Thrashers.

Joe Sakic returned to action and registered an assist in last night's victory over Edmonton.
He played over 16 minutes and reported no problems with his right foot (previously broken). If Peter Forsberg does not play tomorrow due to a calf bruise, Sakic may center his old linemates Milan Hejduk and Alex Tanguay for the game against the Thrashers.

... The early indications appeared positive for (Todd) Bertuzzi, who left 4:20 into the second period after he was hit flush near the left eye by the tip of Nabokov's stick. But it was less clear for (Mattias) Ohlund, who had to be helped off the ice less than 12 minutes later with a left knee injury.

Stars lose Guerin for a month

Dallas right wing Bill Guerin was reevaluated Saturday for the thigh contusion he suffered Thursday night in Ottawa. The team then learned that Guerin, who is third on the Stars with 25 goals, will be out at least a month, with an April 1 projected return date.

Goaltender Marty Turco, out since Feb. 11 with an ankle injury, is still week to week -- but Coach Dave Tippett said he would be "surprised if he (Turco) plays in the next two weeks."

A little bit more on the Stars from DallasNews.com (registration is required to view the article, so I won't post a link):

Brenden Morrow (chest contusion) should return to the lineup Sunday, and goalie Ron Tugnutt is scheduled to start in goal. Tippett said the team will ponder more significant lineup changes Monday – including a possible forward call-up from the Utah Grizzlies and sending backup goalie Corey Hirsch to Utah to get in a couple of games before putting him into NHL action. Hirsch played 20 minutes for Washington in 2000-01 (his last NHL appearance) and played 20 games for Vancouver in 1998-99. Tippett said the management group could also discuss the possibility of bringing up 20-year-old goalie prospect Jason Bacashihua.

Update on Guerin's condition from DallasNews.com:

Stars power forward Bill Guerin could miss the start of the playoffs after undergoing emergency surgery late Saturday night for a thigh contusion in his right leg.

Guerin was suffering from "compartment syndrome," a condition where the bleeding becomes so severe that it cuts off circulation to the thigh muscle. The pressure must be relieved through surgery.

Team physician Dr. Dan Cooper performed the operation at Baylor Medical Center. He and general manager Doug Armstrong were scheduled to hold a news conference at 6 p.m. before the Stars hosted Pittsburgh tonight.

The team said that Guerin will be sidelined a minimum of four to six weeks. The playoffs are scheduled to begin April 9, in about five weeks.

Guerin, who signed a five-year, $45 million deal with the team this summer as a free agent, ranks third on the Stars with 24 goals.

He suffered the original injury when he collided with Ottawa defenseman Chris Phillips in the third period Thursday. Guerin missed the remainder of the contest and did not play in Friday’s game at Buffalo.

excerpt:
With Colorado ahead, 2-1, early in the third period, de Vries unleashed a slap shot from the blue line that struck teammate Peter Forsberg, sending the superstar center to the locker room for medical attention.

As Forsberg doubled over in pain, Tanguay grabbed the loose puck, skated around the net and roofed a shot from the right side over goaltender Roberto Luongo at 6:13 for his second goal in as many games.

"He got hit in the mid-section," Colorado coach Tony Granato said of Forsberg. "So he's fine. It didn't hit a bone. He'll be ready to go Friday."

From the March 10 Washington Post:

Jagr is doubtful with injured wrist

Washington Capitals winger Jaromir Jagr will likely miss tonight's game against Philadelphia with a broken bone fragment in his wrist, sources said, although the injury is not serious. Jagr's injury will not impact the team's stance heading into Tuesday's trade deadline as management continues to explore deals to add a veteran defenseman.

Jagr, the team's leading scorer and the NHL's highest-paid player, was injured when he was slashed late in Saturday's loss to the Boston Bruins. General Manager George McPhee declined to discuss the specifics of Jagr's injury but said, "He might be back [tonight] and our trainers think he will be ready for Friday."

Jagr underwent an MRI exam yesterday morning that revealed no ligament damage and he will be out of a cast by Tuesday, sources said. Washington plays just three games over the next 10 days before beginning a two-week, six-game road trip, allowing ample time for a return.

Killer of an OT loss (from waymoresports.com)

There is a very real chance that Gilmour suffered a serious knee injury last night in the Leafs' 4-3 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames. After colliding with Flames forward Dave Lowry early in the second period, Gilmour left the Pengrowth Saddledome on crutches.

Maple Leafs coach Pat Quinn said he wasn't certain about the extent of Gilmour's injury and it was unsure at that time whether he would stay in Calgary, go back to Toronto to be assessed or get assessed in Vancouver, but Quinn did not sound terribly optimistic.

After logging just eight shifts and 4:51 in ice time, Gilmour collided with Lowry in an accidental away from the puck. One teammate reported that Gilmour said "he didn't feel too bad" when he left the dressing room, but it's almost impossible to diagnose the extent of a knee injury until the swelling goes down after the first 24 hours.

Should Gilmour have torn his anterior cruciate ligament — and that is the Leafs' biggest fear — it would undoubtedly mean that Gilmour's season, and possibly his career would be over.

FROM TODAY'S DENVER POST:

Injury begins Avs' tumble
Forsberg says he expects to return to lineup soon
By Terry Frei
Denver Post Sports Writer

Sunday, March 16, 2003 - DETROIT - After the Colorado Avalanche's 5-3 loss Saturday to Detroit at Joe Louis Arena, Peter Forsberg was walking gingerly, dragging his left leg and wearing a wry expression.

Part of the reason for his bemusement was that he wasn't sure exactly how he sustained a charley horse when checking Detroit's Dmitri Bykov behind the Detroit net early in the second period.

"I was just trying to hit him," Forsberg said. "I don't know what happened, but something hit me on the thigh, obviously. It wasn't like I went in there 200 miles an hour or anything."

Forsberg, arguably the best player in the league the past couple of months while the Avalanche has been hot, said he was virtually certain he wouldn't play today in Washington against the Capitals.

"Hopefully, it won't be too long, though," Forsberg said, adding he was certain it wasn't anything serious.

It's not like the Guerin thing," he said, referring to the buildup of blood in the leg of Dallas winger Bill Guerin that necessitated surgery.

Whether coincidence or otherwise, after Forsberg headed to the bench and then the dressing room, and was done for the day, the Avalanche fell apart for the rest of the second period. That can happen against the Red Wings, the defending Stanley Cup champions who have gone 14-1-0-1 since a loss at Denver on Feb. 8.

Roman Cechmanek will miss at least the next two Flyers' games with a groin injury, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.

He will miss this evening's game against the Penguins, and Saturday afternoon's match against the Rangers, as he recovers from a slight groin pull. The Philly medical staff does not think the injury is serious, but they felt the same way about Simon Gagne's groin pull and look what happened there. Reserve Cechmanek and hope he can play in games next week. Robert Esche should start until Cechamnek returns to action.

The following from calgaryflames.com :

Iginla recovering, could return 'any day'
Jarome Iginla said Wednesday that his shoulder, injured when he was hit into the boards from behind by Washington defenceman Ken Klee, is healing quickly.

"The shoulder has improved. It's a mobility thing. I hope to be back any day. It's like a sprain. I feel fortunate. It could have been worse," said Iginla, who has missed two games.

There is a slim chance that he could play Thursday against the Stars.

Tuesday morning the Flames star hit the ice for the first time since being injured.

An off-day for the team's regulars, Iginla spent an hour on skates, working with Mike Commodore, recently recalled from Saint John of the AHL.
