3 goals in the first period by Calgary. Iginla, Lydman, and Sloan.
Blues are battling back with 2 goals from Tkachuk and one from Demitra. |

Nope, Lindros beat him, on a long shot too. I'd love to see Bure on a line with Kovalev, would be interesting to see what they could do together...I saw somewhere speculation of Bure-Lindros-Kovalev, that'd be something!

got a question for any hockey experts out there.
I'm watching OT of the Ana-NYI game. 8 seconds left, a penalty was just called on the Islanders. The faceoff is in the NYI zone. So, here's the question. Why not pull the goalie? You'd have a 6 on 4 for those final 8 seconds. If the Islanders win the faceoff and shoot all the way down the ice, and score...big deal? You still get your point. The Islanders aren't in your conference, so giving that point to them makes no difference.
But, they didn't do it, the announcers didn't even bring it up, but it seemed like a good idea to me. Maybe I'm missing something. Anyone have a reason for why it'd be a bad idea?

You're right, in OT vs another conference team it really doesn't matter. The one thing about pulling your goalie when on the PP is that the opposition can shoot the puck down the ice with no worries about icing. In this case however, who cares? The extra man is worth the increased chance of a goal, and the downside of giving up a goal is just as negiligible as it was before. (The Anaheim GM might recieve a call from the GM's of the Habs, Bolts and Rangers if a NYI goal was scored, but thats not his concern.)

I remember something about losing your OTL point if you lose with the goalie pulled.

Actually guys, from what I believe is if you pull your goalie in OT and the other team scores, you don't get the extra point. This is one of those bizzare rules of the NHL. Also, another wierd thing in OT is, if one team gets two penalties, it's 5 on 3. Rather then 4 on 2 which would be really crappy for the team with the 2 players..

Really... I didn't know about that rule. I guess its to prevent what I said in #9. One team going all out for a goal, not caring if the other team manages to do it first, when that extra point for the other team could determine a playoff spot or not for other teams.

That's right. You don't get the OTL point if there's no goalie tending the goal. And 8 seconds is more than enough to score an empty netter.
