0 Subject: Is Hockey better than any other sport?

I've never been too much of a hockey fan but one of my friends has enlisted me to play the Basic Hockey Season 2 game. As such, I'm starting to learn some of the basics of this sport and some of the players too.

For you die-hard hockey fanatics, my question is this: In the USA, since hockey has always been considered as the step-child of the four major sports, is it really better than any of the other three sports?

This country absolutely loves its football, baseball and basketball. With all due respect, hockey, seemingly, is just there. But is that a fair and accurate assessment? Or would it be fair to say that hockey is basically just a cold weather sport? Can hockey ever be as great as the other three sports? What is it about hockey that makes it a great sport?

The thing I don't like about hockey is that if you're down by 3 goals going into the 3rd period the game is pretty much over. Down by 10 points in hoops with 5 minutes left, hey you've got a shot. Down by 14 points in football heading to the 4th quarter and you still have a shot. Down by 3 runs in the bottom of the ninth you still have a chance to win - just ask any Red Sox fan. That and the fact that the regular season doesn't really mean anything unless you have a fantasy team. My personal ranking would be 1. Baseball 2. Football 3. Hoops 4. Hockey

Well, except for ukula, it's going to be difficult to find folks on a hockey board who will not rank hockey highly. We like 'cause it's fast, physical, and intense. Not as many slow spots as the other 3 sports (foul shooting, baseball by definition is slow, and football's huddles and timeouts are infuriating).

Otherwise, hockey is good.

Up by three runs in the ninth and you still have a chance to lose.

I've actually played all 4 sports, and I can tell you that hockey is just more fun. Faster paced, cool plays (setting up a nice one-timer is a thing of beauty) and, well, just more fun. Not sure why, but I just think so.

Ukula, I'd say that down by 3 goals going into the 3rd is just as isurmoutable as a big lead in football, or a big lead in b-ball. Hell, the league-leading Sens just coughed up a 3 goal lead last night to the lowly Panthers.

A blowout hockey game is just as boring as a blowout football game imho. (The superbowl was BORING. That game was over going into halftime.)

Play the game. You will find out soon.

And by game, i mean pick up a hockey stick and shoot around with some friends.

C2C,
I think hockey fans are biased toward their sport. A good portion of fans that rank another sport as their favorite don't like hockey. "I can't follow the puck", or "There are too many rules" are the arguments I usually hear. Fox tried a few years ago to cancel out one of those arguments, but(back me on this hockey fans) Fox Trax was a joke. The little fireball thing? I mean really....
True hockey fans seem to find every other sport boring. Hockey may not have as high a score as the other sports, but IMO has the potential for much more exciting play. Once you figure out the basics(offsides, icing, two-line pass) for play stoppage, the game makes a lot more sense.
You'll be addicted in no time.
Most of the American public needs to be spoon-fed, so we don't want to take the time to learn anything complicated, and that's why it'll never be big down here south of the border.

Watch the game in the playoffs, you'll be hooked,

Hockey is cool, but the game itself is quite similar to soccer except for the hired goons.

I like baseball more than other sports myself because I enjoy the strategy aspect of the game.

What does 3 goals have to do with anything? The average game right now is totaling just over 5 goals scored. So 3 goals? That's 60% of the expected scoring of the entire game.

On the other hand, baseball games see about 10 runs per game, so 3 runs is just 30%, or half that of hockey, of the expected scoring for the entire game. A 3 goal lead going into the 3rd in hockey is already a blowout. A 6 run lead going into the 7th (last 1/3 of the game) in baseball is a blowout. Apples to apples, not apples to oranges.

And don't even get me started on Basketball. Is there ANY team in the NBA that can win on the road? WOW! Now that's some excitement. Going to the arena knowing that only 5 teams in the entire league have a winning record on the road. No team currently worst than just second in their division has a winning road record. The Atlantic Division has nobody with a winning road record, but 6 of 7 have a winning home record. Talk about predictable. Going into the 4th quarter, my money is on the home team, regardless of how many points they're up or down by. As a matter of fact, in Basketball Pick'ems, I've picked just over 2/3 of my games correctly and have selected the away team just 126 out of 777 picks. Now THAT's some excitement. At least I actually have to think about my hockey picks before I make them.

Personally, I LOVE hockey. I used to be a huge baseball fan, but it's playing 2nd fiddle now. I don't like the whining of the baseball players who have an ingrown toenail and act like what they do is so physically straining. C'mon, you spend most of the time standing around out in the field. Will it hurt when you have to move? Yes. Do you have to move all that often? No. Deal with it. Deal with it like a hockey player.

Hockey players are notoriously gritty. They play through pain and put it all out there every night. Hockey players can lose as much as 5-8 pounds EACH GAME! Now THAT is physically taxing. Working up a sweat running to CF isn't all that physically taxing.

But one of my big reasons for liking hockey is the ice. The other big 3 are played on surfaces where your feet are more or less firmly planted. Not the same in hockey. Sure, you can get some grip, but you're just as likely to go flying into the boards. And, on the subject of boards, I love them! Give me Arena Football any day over the NFL guys running out of bounds.

My personal rank (thinking as if I had the choice to go to a live game, all expenses paid) is: Hockey, Arena Football, Football, Baseball, Basketball.

Basketball is an exciting game. But in hockey there is no inherent advantage in giantism, or any other form of genetic freakery. People with disparate talents (from tiny finesse players to goons) can contribute. And the game itself, as a game, is as exciting as any.

My main problem with football is that you have like 50 players on each team and each team plays 16 games. It's impossible to learn every player. But for the other sports, each team plays far more games so that even with big teams like baseball, the players still get enough exposure so that I know their names.

I like hockey the most because I think that it's the hardest to master. The other three sports involve mainly throw and catch, but hockey involves skating, and not every adult can do that. It's just that much harder a sport, and therefore whenever a nice play comes up, I really appreciate it.

I'd rank baseball second. A lot of people don't like the slow pace, but I find the slow pace the most compelling, as opposed to the fast pace hockey. When a game is close, every pitch can change the result of the game. It makes you look forward to the next pitch.
