Given Toronto's position financially and future growth I'd say no.
Alan Mcauley wasn't doing much for TO.
Brad Boyes hasn't played in a TO uniform and it takes at least 3-4yrs of NHL experience to develop into a solid blueliner. There are exceptions.
A 1st rnd pick late in the draft has been a historical crapshoot for the Leafs.

Draft picks are overrated if you are not in the top 5.
Teams can compensate lost draft picks with free agent signings.

If Toronto didn't get Nolan some other team would hav picked him up.

Toronto has Nolan, be happy, it's a good fit, but who'll get Selanne? that'd be better!

Boyes is not a defenseman...3-4 years to develop into a top 2 Centreman which is what the Leaf's were expecting out of him.

this years draft is deep so a 1st round draft will be significant even if it is at #20 or whenever. Boyes is clearly a centre. i agree that Nolan is an upgrade from McCauley.

a bird in hand is better than two in the bush.
the question is, will back problems affect this bird?

Toronto usually solves their off-season holes threw FA/trades anyway. They haven't been a Ottawa/NJ type of team that builds big threw the draft.
