0 Subject: Goalies down the stretch

I think from here on in, picking goaltenders for fantasy teams will be very tough. Teams that have locked up playoff berths will be looking to rest their #1 goalies and give their backups some work to get ready for the playoffs. Teams that are well out of the playoff race may want to give some stress-free NHL experience to their promising goalies-of-tomorrow.

From the Daily Camera (link) :

Roy's win-loss-tie record this season, despite the Colorado Avalanche's shaky start, is 30-14-12. That adds up to 56 games played, which means he would prefer to play in only five or six of the team's final eight regular-season contests.

David Aebischer, who gave Roy a rest during the third period of the Avs' 8-1 laugher over Chicago Saturday, will get the start on Monday at Buffalo. Roy will face Ottawa on Tuesday.

"I think it's good for Abby," said Roy, who believes between 60 and 63 regular season starts is the most he can have and still be energized for the playoffs. "It's an important game for us. We're in pursuit of Vancouver and then I'll have Ottawa the next night. It's a good challenge for us. We'll have to play well."

I've heard that Belfour said something similar, although that's second hand and I don't have a source. I imagine Joseph won't get all of Detroit's starts either.

So who are the good goalies to pick right now? I'm tending to think that the best choices are ones from teams which are still either fighting for a playoff spot, or at least for home ice advantage.

I picked up Kolzig, despite his back to backs, but I would have picked up Khabibulin if I'd known he would be available for yesterday's game.

Dunham might have been a good pick except for his sparse schedule and Blackburn's surprise start last night. Snow seems like a good pick.

I wish I hadn't dropped Vokoun.

Thoughts?

Blackburn did not start last night; he came out after the first period with a tight hamstring. He is listed as day to day.

How about Marty Turco?! He'll be back tonight...Needs to get some games to get back in shape.

I think it's easier to pick goalies this year than the last few years, because most playoff teams are still fighting to position.

Normally Brodeur and Cechmanek would be resting, but not this season cuz they are fighting for their division. Same thing goes with Roy and Cloutier, Joseph and Osgood, Khabibulin and Kolzig, and Giguere. Turco, as pointed out, needs to play the games to get back in game shape. The only three I can see who might get some rest is Lalime, Belfour and Salo.

I've got Roy/Brodeur, and might move Roy for Turco if I think Roy will sit often. Only problem with Turco is that he has to go the last 4 days of the season... Dallas only has 1 game during that time.

I am less concerned about stud goalie playing time (unless it's on a game by game basis; i.e. day trading) as I am about the likelihood of winning or shutting out a given opponent. I like Roy's schedule A LOT even though he does not play as often as Brodeur. I also like Brodeur as he plays a lot and wins a lot.

Giguere is hot again and back playing most of the Ducks' games.

I also like CUJO a lot as the wings have primarily non-playoff teams down the stretch.

Finally, Khabibulin is also playing well as is the rest of his team.

One key will making day trades during the last week of the season (a la baseball for a given pitcher).

Aebischer might be sitting the rest of the way
Backup goalie might not see much more action this season

Although he started in goal for the Colorado Avalanche on Monday night, the Swiss goalie figures to be only slightly more active than a hibernating grizzly bear in the coming weeks.

Thibault's concussion does not appear to be improving:

Excerpt from Thibault's tough times (Chicago Tribune):
Thibault is recovering from post-concussion symptoms from a blow he received in the third period of a March 9 game against Boston, and he doesn't seem to be getting any better.

"I feel worse than [Sunday]," Thibault said.

He has had a constant headache since the original blow, he said, and has also experienced dizziness and nausea.

Doesn't sound good. You realize how good he is when you see how Chicago's been playing since he's been out, with an 8-1 loss to the Avs on Sat and a 9-2 loss to the Isles last night. A good time to be owning players on teams playing Chicago!

Good point about owning Chicago opponents, except they're playing Nashville, Minnesota and Edmonton next, not exactly offensive powerhouses. Wish I owned Yashin last night...Did get lots of points from the Avs victory.

Surely you aren't suggesting that the Islanders are an offensive powerhouse.

I would kindly like to know from any wings fans tonight or tomorrow if they have any information about whether CUJO starts tomorrow in San Jose. If not, I move him to Roy. If so, I keep.

Once the Oilers clinch, Salo probably won't start for the rest of the season

Thanks Ira,

Although Salo's GAA is pretty crappy lately, IIRC.

I'm going with Khabi. Unfortunately I was short by $0.01M (Don't you *hate* it when that happens?) so I had to make another trade to free up the cash.

Hope the effort pays off!

i'm going with cujo and turco. These teams are battling for first place in the conference and have a remote chance of finishing 1st overall.

After last night's game, I am trading OUT of Cujo and into Roy (I have Roy on my other team; whew!). Detroit's coach said he wants to get Legace into 1 or 2 games down the stretch, while a published report posted elsewhere on this site indicates that Roy is going to start all of the Avalanche's remaining games. Theretoforehence, I like Roy.

Of course, I expected Cujo and the wings to dominate San Jose last night, but some unknown goalie from the Sharks shut out the Wings instead. Detroit's next game is IN St.L while Colorado hosts Phoenix.

Cujo --> Roy
