Avalanche sign Kariya and Selanne

07/03/2003

The Colorado Avalanche have broken the bank, signing superstars Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya.

The move re-unites Selanne and Kariya, who were linemates with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim before Selanne was traded to the San Jose Sharks.

The Avalanche will make the official announcement at 4pm et.

They didn't break the bank so much....

An NHL source said that Kariya agreed to a $1.2 million contract, though it's not known yet why the star wing accepted such a small salary. Reuniting the dynamic duo from Anaheim now frees up the Avalanche to trade Alex Tanguay, perhaps for a goalie to replace the retired Patrick Roy. Colorado has to be considered a very, very strong Stanley Cup contender for 2003-04, even if other major clubs follow with big moves.

Selanne, who declined his option at $6.5 million with the San Jose Sharks, agreed to a $5.8 million, one-year contract with Colorado. The Avalanche are being aggressive in their attempt to return to the Stanley Cup Finals. This is a strong first step in that direction, but now the team must upgrade its goaltending due to Patrick Roy's retirement and re-sign their free agent defensemen.

This is a league where goaltending is key. David Aebischer is a nothing of a goaltender compared to the big guns out there. As much as the talent looks good for the Avs, if they don't get either CuJo or Burke they will struggle to win it all. Look for the to try to get CuJu from the wings for some of their offensive young talent. They still have Reinprecht, Tanguay, and Battaglia! They need to do something with them. Reinprecht and Battaglia are better then 3rd line players and with the first two lines being so strong, there won't be as much ice time for the 3rd line. They fix up a nice defensive checking line and run with those 3 lines and who cares what you have on the third line. With the wings getting old, they might consider a move of Cujo for Reinprecht and Battaglia! One things for sure, Roy needs to come out of retirement which will never happen or they need to land Burke or CuJo. The great one should be prepared to move Burke for some of the young talent that the Avs can offer!

Why would they need to replace Aesbischer? Look at those 2 lines. 5-7 goals a night should be no surprise.

LOL Ira. You can't win in these playoffs without a goaltender. maybe Aebischer pulls off a Turco and does well but when you spend a lot of money on skaters, you better have the confidence in your tender to help you when you are on an off night!

$7M for two (ex-)top stars aren't really that much money. Pierre Lacroix pulled a miracle. With Patrick Roy's salary ($10M?) gone, the Avs probably have even more to spend.

I saw the interview with Kariya and his price tag is just below the league minimum which allows him to be an unrestricted free agent after this year (1.2 mil) Can anyone fill me in on this? I wasn't aware that you needed to be in a specific pay bracket to be unrestricted. So is Selanne a restricted freee agent because he was paid almost 6 mil?

If you have played for ten years and your current salary is below the league average your status changes to a group IV free agent. Same as Prospal I beleive.

And Selanne is over 31 years old, so he'll be an unrestricted free agent like he just was.

Aebischer is a COL draft pick ('97) and COL has a pretty good history of picking good/decent netminders:
'95 Denis
'95 B. Johnson
'93 Thibault
'92 Passmore
'92 M.Fernandez
'88 Fiset
'87 Snow
'86 Tugnutt

Considering Aebischer will have a good D in front of him and has a career 2.19 GAA and .917 Sv% in 69 games, I don't think they're going to have the problems that most people expect with Roy's retirement. All he'll need to do is maintain a 2-2.5 GAA and his offense should be able to do the rest.

Personally, I'll be giving him a very close look in my Yahoo leagues.

Kariya and Selanne actually decided on playing in Colorado. They wanted to play together, and thought Colorado would be a good place to play. LaCroix doesn't usually make off-season deals with free agents. It's too expensive. But when Kariya and Selanne's agent called LaCroix and pitched the offer, Pierre couldn't do anything but accept. Especially since he's got $9 million to play with since Patty retired.

Yep, and apparently Anaheim offered them about 9-11 million between the two of them to play for the Ducks..
