$1.95M for a guy who put up 78 points just 2 years ago isn't that bad. He took a dip in points last year because of playing for ANA. I wouldn't be surprised to see him surpass last years point total (45) even with fewer games.

Actually he was injured last year. Even when he played, it probably still bothered him.

Umm, his teammates in Anaheim last year were better than the Oilers this year. At least he had Paul Kariya and Petr Sykora. What does he have now? Ryan Smyth and Ales Hemsky? I'll take Anaheim from last season any time.

TLW, Kariya, Oates, and Sykora didn't start skating together until about halfway through the season, so it's not like he had a full season of play with them. Further, Smyth and Sykora are a wash as far as point potential and Hemsky is young and easily has 60-point potential (he already has 11 points in 16 games without Oates). If Smyth and Hemsky can put up 60+ points on the season, I think Oates should be able to do better than 45 with the remaining games. No matter what, I think this is a good signing for EDM. Veteran leadership from a class act guy who is still able to contribute on the ice and show the young guys a thing or two about playing in the NHL.

I know we didn't get screwed by him getting $1.95. Infact, I believe it's quite reasonable, but, unlike most teams, Edmonton can't just throw around money, we are extremely tight for budget. Heck, if Smyth got over 4 mil in compensation this year I guaruntee he'd be traded. 2 mil in Edmonton's case is about equivalent to 5 mil in most American cities.
I guess not paying Comrie helps.

Edmonton also plays more wide open but Oates is a year older so I feel it's a wash. I'm expecting similar or lower numbers than last year seeing as how he's missed so many games already and will probably take a while to adjust fully.

Ira, for just his offensive skills, I agree that $1.95M would be a bit hit for EDM. However, they get much more than that in a player like Oates, so even by EDM standards I think they got a bargain.

Board_Wiper, the main reasons we signed him was for leadership (we're 2nd youngest in the league), and faceoffs (ranked 27th, and our top faceoff man, Reasoner, is injured for 1 month +). His offence is just a bonus.
KKB, I agree Edmonton is getting their money's worth, even at their budget. I guess I'm just not used to seeing this type of signing in Edmonton.
