I was looking at last years standings and although it's the same old game, things seem to be much different this year.

12/20/02

First of all RV's are absoutely soaring ths year. I really can't pinpoint the difference as the formula is probably the same. Maybe people just know what they're doing a little more this year, not sure. It seems so easy to make money right now. I've been making money at a clip of about 400K per day for a couple of weeks now, and I just don't see it stopping.....back to the standings.

Total TSNP is down this year, that may be attributed to no Mario as he was lights out the first half of last year. RV is way up though. Only a hanful of teams were even above 60 at this point and te top RV was about 64.5. Dr. Doom and Rogue have already eclipsed 70, and there are just generally more non-rotoguru teams that have very good RVs if you look at the current top franchise vlaues list.

But, the 1 thing that just jumps out at me is manager stats. We are roughly 30-35 man games into the season and closing in on the halfway mark and a little behind last years pace (again Mario effect)....but look at the point totals. he top guy had 119 goals and 194 assists.... while it's 124 and 146 this year.

Maybe meaningless stats, but if there are about 50 man games left, where do the next 330 or so assists come from?

I mean, it is literaly 2 different games. What we have just done is the first game and the next 50 or so games is the other game with RV. I tallied 314 assists from 12/20 until the end of the season last year while only having 169 up until that point. The difference there blew my mind away when I was looking at it last night with Rogue.

This effect may only be magnified this year as players are more expensive and the haves (RV speaking) compared to the have nots continues to grow by day. So all I'm saying is get on your horses and gain RV with every trade or you will just be left behind.

Maybe it was just a tough week, but looking at the 'RV-last 5 days' column the difference is staggering. The TOP team over the 5-day period in the entire game made 850K. Thats just 170K a day. This year, only 170K a day by my teams would be a huge dissapointment. 300K a day is easily reached, and with a little judicious trading 400K a day isn't too hard either.

Money is definitely easier to come by this year. Last year the top RV at the end of the year 79 million, with only 6 teams over 75 million. We're already at 70 million with just 35 games done. I bet we reach 80 million by the end of January.

I don't recall a lot from last year, but I can think of one reason for this years RV explosion:

There have been several players that were money trains that had long term fantastic schedules so there was no need to trade the trains, thereby conserving trades for other short term money making trains. Last year, I don't think there were a lot of long term money trains..

A few examples from this year: Illya (early), Savard, Datsyuk, Hull, Recchi and Roenick. These guys were all guys that were held for more than 2 weeks and some of them at the same time...

Just a thought

Could the higher RVs be attributed to more active teams this year than last? More trades being made means more price changes for more players. So basically more lemmings to drive up prices. Who are these people that trade for Trent Hunter today when they could have got him yesterday? Doug Weight gets suspended and his price goes up. Mike Comrie gets traded and some owners trade for him.

Things aren't that much different in the free game. I entered three teams both seasons, and I am up about $7M in total, but that can be attributed to the fact that I had a west-only team last season which limited my points. In points, I'm actually trailing by 300 points, but that's not significant at all.

What I felt is that it is a lot easier for a player to go up more than $150k this season. Perhaps they are doing that because the player prices seem to be higher this season.

Nice one smallwhirled, you picked the day that you passed me in the standings;-)
I'm doing better this year in the standings, but maybe it's because there are fewer managers, then again I'm 1100 TSNP behind smallwhirled, so I may be doing worse;-)
The difference between success and disaster this year has been the pick of goalies, it's a bigger part of the game than I thought it was.
