Peter Forsberg (C) COL 1/17/2004
Forsberg was a late scratch for the Avalanche's game against San Jose on Saturday because of a groin injury, the Associated Press reports. Forsberg had been on fire of late, scoring five goals and 11 assists in his previous eight games. We'll give you more on his status as we know it, but for now, consider Forsberg day-to-day.

Denver Post  (01/18)

Forsberg skated in the warm-up Saturday, but couldn't go. The issue is whether that was a sign that the groin and stomach muscle problems that earlier kept him out of 22 games in a 24-game stretch will be reoccurring the rest of the season, and perhaps affect the Avalanche's playoff fate. After the game, Colorado coach Tony Granato said he didn't know how long Forsberg will be out of the lineup this time. The Avs open a four-game, six- night road trip Monday at Tampa Bay. "Peter tweaked his groin a little bit in the last game (Thursday against Dallas), and we didn't think it was anything major," Granato said. Forsberg, who wasn't made available to the media at the game, didn't practice Friday. But neither did some other veterans, so that was considered more "maintenance" than a possible sign for concern. "He went in warm-ups, felt a little uncomfortable with it, came off, told the trainer about it, and like we do with any groin injury with any guy, there's so sense taking a chance," Granato said. Of course, groin muscle injuries are common plagues in this sport, almost as common as the official injury reports would have one believe. So it's not automatic that Forsberg's latest problem is either serious or a sign of long-range issues.

Monday update:

Forsberg with team, but return up in air

When the Avalanche left Denver on Sunday afternoon, Peter Forsberg was aboard the chartered flight. That doesn't mean he will be available tonight when Colorado opens its four-game road trip against the Tampa Bay Lightning. In fact, it seems unlikely ... "We'll play it day by day and see where he's at," Avalanche coach Tony Granato said Sunday morning at the South Suburban Family Sports Center in Centennial. "So I don't know whether it's going to be just a one-game thing or something that's going to be a little bit longer. It's the same thing we went through last time. Until he's feeling that he's 100 percent and ready to go and until the doctors say there's no problem, we're not going to force anything."
