Why are you pissed? It's obvious that they had not an ounce of team chemistry. The team was a list of all-stars that just never gelled and seemed to always underperform.

Personally, I don't see that completely as the coaches fault. The Rangers have been that way for a while now. They need to stop focusing on getting big name players and start working on building a TEAM.

Poor Jagr. Out of the basement and into a playoff race... for two weeks.

If Rangers are dumping salary, why did they take Jagr to start with?

Rangers are doing what they should be doing. Unloading underacheivers and re-arming with draft picks. This is a good move for a team in disarray. It's back to the basics.

I can't say that Toronto's offence really needed a Leetch. I would have preferred to see and stay at home d-man under the age of 35. Although Chelios (his age) has proven us soooo wrong.

Boston has basically rented Gonchar. Offensive d-man but younger than Leetch, and rumor has it that he didn't have the flu but actually had a minor concussion. He's a free agent at the end of the season and I don't think that Boston is willing to throw the type of money at him when he becomes eligible for free agency.

I think Boston got the better short-term deal.

Barring a collapse we will probably going to see a Boston-Ottawa, Ottawa-Toronto, Toronto-Boston first round series. So it should be very intense opening series.

In the end, I think that's what will cost Sather his job. When he aquired Jagr I don't think he really knew what the team needed. His team (and ego I bet) were reeling, so he went out and aquired someone to help. He didn't really look at the team's problems though, nor did he plan long-term. Everyone that has been shipped out had affordable contracts, but Jagr they're going to have to live with for a long time.

If Rangers are dumping salary, why did they take Jagr to start with?

It was a last stand as GM/Coach. For some unknown reason, he thought his team could still make the playoffs. Granted, they weren't completely eliminated, but this is the Rangers we're talking about here. They're not what they once were. He basically tried to show that he could get the big name (the GM side) and then take the team to the playoffs as a result (the Coach side). None of that worked out and he's no longer coach. It's only a matter of time until he's no longer GM, IMHO.

And now that the entire experiment has blown up, he's dumping salary, particularly going into what could be the end of the NHL for a while.

Jagr wasn't that bad of a move, because Washington is covering half of his salery. Also, Carter really wasn't showing up for the Blue Shirts. I saw him play, and it was no were near the intensity level he played with in Edmonton.

Also, Lindros might be sticking around for a while in NY, because his base salery isn't that much.

Kovalev, Leetch, and Nedved are all really exiting players to watch though. That's my biggest grief.

Not that I think, that the Rangers' aren't doing the right thing. Obviously, they need to rebuild. Thankfully, they kept Lundmark in the organization, so they might have a future to build around.

KKB is right. Also, Lindros, if he returns this Sunday as potentially he might, is also on the block. The Rangers are 6 years overdue for something like this...

Some more detail from a local and long-time (25 years) ranger fan:

1. Sather realizes, ableit way too many years too late, that the only way for the rangers to succeed is to build a nucleus of young, talent.

2. Sather likely figures he has little to lose in changing the philosopy/strategy of the rangers. He must have also gotten Dolan's endorsement to rid the rangers of "star power" ("hey, we can easily lose without spending all those $, too").

3. NY Times speculates that, contrary to what was suggested above in a different post, Sather is likely NOT going to be fired, but rather was given a chance to turn the team around in a way that makes the most hockey sense (see #1 above), and which has been proven successful elsewhere (e.g. NJ, TB, Boston, etc.).

4. So far, except for Leetch, the players the rangers have sold off are not beholden to the city nor to the fans. Kovalev and Nedved are big underachievers and are boo'ed constantly. Leetch is near and dear to all ranger fans, and will be missed.

5. These moves, and more to come, make total hockey sense. I do wish, however, that a younger, more Brian Cashman/Theo Epstein-like GM, would be hired to replace Sather to run the organization next year. Perhaps this will happen. I really dunno.

Listen, All I'm saying is, with the group of guys that Sather put together over the past few years, you got to make it work, or move on.

Would it have been that crazy to go for Keenan as Coach again?
I'm just saying if you've liquidated young talent like (Brendl, York, K.Johnson, Havlac[we got back], Dvorak, R.Murray, Zidlicky, & tons of Draft Picks),why not try to mix things up mid season by getting a "Good" experience coach? Not Sather, who hasn't had a winning season behind the bench in how many years? (12 I think)

Anyways, I do think that at this point in time, they are doing what they have too. Just too bad the management let it slip for so long.

I refuse to root for anyone else though.

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

Good for you I_AM_CANADIAN. I, too, am a rangers fan, and am a U.S. person to boot! ;-)

Hey, I don't want Sather here either, nor do the fans who chant: "Fi-Re" Sa-ther" each game. However, your thread should then be entitled:

"I am pissed at JAMES DOLAN." Now THERE is your culprit sir. Dolan should:

. step down himself and/or
. fire Sather with himself

Dolan is your root cause -- as long as he in charge, then the rangers will either have the wrong GM/Coach, and/or will pressure that GM/Coach to make the wrong decisions to win quickly.
