0 Subject: How long does it take to dissolve NHL?

The owners want a salary cap. The players don't want a salary cap. Neither will budge, and I don't see when either side would cave in.

So, the question is, how long will it take before they dissolve the NHL?

This is the prime time for the WHA to take some players from the NHL.

The fact of the matter is, the players will lose because they will never make as much money as they do now at any place other than the NHL, even with a salary cap. That being said, I'm not sure if they'd compromise at all.

Another thing: I think it's partly the the management's fault for the esculated salaries these days.

Nobody tells the Rangers to offer Sakic a front-loaded contract, and the same goes for the Hurricanes with Fedorov. If the GMs work together and nobody signs Lapointe and Holik to those ridiculous contracts, then we wouldn't have what we have today.

If a player is asking for $6M a year but nobody signs him, then he will have to lower his price before he gets a contract anywhere.

I think its definitely the managements fault for the salaries. Players would have to be crazy to turn down that kinda money. But when you have big market teams that can afford to offer more, they are gonna take advantage to try to land the better players, and then smaller market teams will try to land a couple key names to avoid from becoming basically a farm team so they try to match offers, which just turns into a vicious cycle and ends up sending salaries through the roof. I'm not exactly sure of the details but I don't think managers can work together to keep salaries down by simply not offering, because the union can make a case of it being a form of collusion.

botton line is a handful of rich teams have driven the salaries up as well as some terribly mismanaged teams to boot.

the fools finally smartened up summer of 03

owners have nobody to blame but themselves for getting themselves into the mess

Personnally I would call them together and tell them that from now on (1) No player can earn more than 5 X as much as the President of the United States and (2) that the teams will pass 75% of the salary savings back to the fans as ticket price reductions or be "citified" with ownership transferring to the city in which they presently reside for the present value of the franchise (as resticted).

Then he will also say its collusion on the owners part to.

I'm not so sure the owners had as much choice in what happened. Sure they paid huge salaries, but what about arbitration? I think it was more how free agency and arbitration were structured that made the CBA a failure. That and I agree that the teams that could afford the big name players and pay them the big salaries made it impossible for the smaller market teams to be competitive without deficit spending. It's broke all around.

They could avoid having a salary cap if they just changed the rules for free agency and arbitration. It would at least be a good starting point for negotiations.

Collusion? They'll never have the proof of it if everything is "understood" and nothing is written down.

And what about the team that wants the player? They are just going to lay down and wait for everyone to bid on him?

Find an alternative then. You don't really want to destroy the game so that you can get an overpriced player, do you?

Wait a minute, apparently they do want to do that.

Come to think of it, perhaps restricted free agency is part of the problem that contributes to the jacking up of the players' prices. If a team wants a young free agent, it's got to offer so high that his original team might not want to match the offer. Then other players of similar caliber see that, and they go around asking for a similar high price. When that high price becomes a norm, it'll take an even higher price to ply a player away from another team.

they say deals like jose theodores 5+ mil a season after only making 1.5 ish the previous season is what jacks the salaries up more than anything as well .

he set the bar for js giguere to make similar money after having a stellar playoff run , ducks-njd

I think if players are allowed to take teams to arbitration , then the teams should be allowed to take the players to arbitration as well if they feel the player isnt worth his salary anymore
