Sure he's the best hockey player ever, but does that translate to coaching ability? I'm not so sure about this decision... |

He was always a leader on the ice, which usually translates well to coaching.

But how successful have some of the greatest players ever been at coaching in ANY sport? While their drive and love for the game is bound to rub off, their annoyance for their players' lack of similar skill as they can often lead to great frustration. Larry Bird is one example.
Ought to be interesting.

Could this be a marketing/publicity move? It's certainly very big news in the North American sporting world, and that's certainly going to get the Coyotes quite a few more season ticket sales.

Anything that Gretzky has touched pretty much has turned to gold...case in point, returning a slumping Canadian Hockey program back to being a major success.
I think Barry Smith and Tochett/Bowness will do a lot of the grunt work while Gretzky serves as an insipirational leader and coach.
I see this working out well...hopefully.
