I literally have a tear in my eye :(

Thrashers' trade Dany Heatley

He asked to be traded so that he could have a fresh start

The Thrashers are in the process of finalizing a trade that would send star right wing Dany Heatley to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for right wing Marian Hossa, 26, and a defenseman whose identity is still be haggled out, either Greg de Vries or Chris Phillips, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations.

It appears that Heatley, 24, the former NHL rookie of the year, who received three years probation in February for pleading guilty to misdemanor vehicular homicide in the death of teammate Dan Snyder, had asked to be traded so that he could have a fresh start somewhere new.

Reached at her home in Calgary, Heatley's mother Karin said she did not want to comment. It seems the trade came together today when Hossa avoided arbitration by signing a three-year $18 million contract. He will make $5 million this season.

Under the league's new salary cap, Ottawa could not - or was not willing - to retain Hossa at that price. The trade likely allows them to keep defenseman Wade Redden, about whom trade rumors have swirled, also for financial reasons.

Over the last four seasons, Hossa has averaged 36 goals and has been one of the leading scorers for the Senators, who have been among the best teams in the NHL.

Questions have surfaced as to whether Heatley, drafted second overall in 2000, can regain the form that allowed him to score 41 goals and total 89 assists in 2002-03, the year he won MVP of the All-Star Game.

During the lockout, he suffered a serious eye injury, for which he must wear a visor for the remainder of his career, and his production slipped for Team Canada at the 2004 World Cup and 2005 World Championships.

That is a big trade. Hossa should help the Thrashers alot too.

It works a bit for Ottawa too. They aren't too impressed with Hossa right now, and would love to dump Greg deVries' NY Ranger salary, and this allows them to do both and still save face.

That being said, considering that Heatley has demanded a trade, Atlanta sure is getting fair value back, which isn't something we often see on these gun to the head deals.

Good for both, IF Heatley can go back to his form. After the crash and his injury.

I cant tell you as a Thrasher fan how dissapointed I am in Heatley. This town totally accepted and forgave him for his accident. I was at the game when he came back in late 2004. Never was I involved in a longer or more impressive standing ovation. And now he wants out when the team is just on the verge of a breakthrough. The Thrashers may be a better team with Hossa and de Vries, but Heatley was the face of this team, to just walk away after everything, thats just a slap in the face, IMO.

I'm not completely sold on this trade, being in Ottawa, I can see Heatley bringing something Hossa could never brought to us... A true Canadian who wants to win the cup.... But the down side of this one is Heatley's knee, I really hope he can get back to his first 2 years of performance...

No way is it a slap in Atlanta's face. Heatly needed a change, imagine how hard it was for him. Not condoning him at all but still put yourself in his position. Thrasher fans were awesome with him but a change is good all around and in getting our best offensive weapon you did well for yourselves. With that said oh baby am I ever happy. We needed more grit and baby does Heatly ever give that. I think that regular season wise we are weaker. Marion will outproduce Dany but we'll still be solid and come playoff time, we'll be much stronger. I mean with the rule changes who knows, maybe Hossa is given tons of space and becomes sick but grit has to still count even with the changes and Dany gives you tons more the Marion ever did and ever will! Great trades both sides but huge thumbs up as a sens fan! No worries about his knee Tuques, he'll fight it off like a true Canadian!!

I agree. I don't see this as a slap in the face to ATL. I don't know that many of us know the emotions involved when a teammate and friend was killed because of your driving. I can't even begin to imagine the emotions surrounding Heatley when he was in the city, much less in the arena. A change in environment would certainly seem to be a good thing, if nothing else than to keep him from constantly thinking about Snyder.

I once knew an elderly woman whose husband passed away. They had lived in a house for quite some time together. When her husband died, the woman sold her house and moved to another place. Her reasoning was that at every turn in the house, there was something to remind her of her husband and it was too much to bear. She didn't mind reminiscing, but she didn't want the constant reminders all day and night.

I can only imagine that Heatley feels/felt similar emotions.
