As a kid growing up, there was one thing I cared about, and that was the Edmonton Oilers. And even more than Wayne Gretzky, there was one guy I admired, and idolized, and that was Mark Messier.

With his retirement today, it has been bittersweet to watch all his old highlights.

The guy has to go down as one of the best ever to lace them up, and one of, if not, the best leaders/champions ever, in any sport. Considering he not only won a 5th cup in Edmonton without Gretz, he then went on to NYC to bring them back to greatness- how can't he be seen as one of the greatest ever?

He did so much- he made the game 6 garuntee before making garuntee's became cliche- and not only did his garuntee come true, he scored a hat trick in that game.

So, goodbye Moose- if I ever subject my kids to the crap they now call hockey, I will remind them of how you played the game- how when I was their age, I watched the greatest hockey ever played, by you, and the rest of the Edmonton Oilers of the mid 80's

A great player--one of the best ever, certainly. It was once said of him, during his earlier Ranger years, "He has the smoothest passes to no one in particular..."
