0 Subject: Hockey Strategy (Risky)

I have never played fantasy hockey before, but I am this year and would like to see what people in the know think about this strategy.

I am in a 11-cat Yahoo league (G, A, +/-, PIM, PPP, SOG, W, GA, GAA, SV%, SHO).

We have 3 goalie starting positions. I am considering drafting 1 stud goalie, and using only him for the first few (or possibly only one) games. If he pitches a shutout, I will be first in GA, SV%, and GAA. I can then trade Turco or Brodeur for position players. I would have 32 points out of my goalies (10 team league).

This league is only for fun so I think I might try it. What do you guys think?

only Prob is that you will 32 points out of a of 50 Points thtats like finishing 6th in every catagory. I dont think this is a winning play.

great strategy - not. Think about the game itself and not a way to cheat the system. Be honest and play the game. If you use this strategy I bet you won't be invited back...

In a league with more teams it might be worth a shot, but giving up 18 points out of 110 is at best 92 pts. If you run into any problems with your forwards (which everyone always does) you'll be lucky to finish top 3. In a league with 16 or more teams I can see this being a bit more feasible.

Well thanks for the opinions. Another factor to consider is that I will only have to draft 1 goalie, and thus my non-goalie lineup would be really strong.

I'm going to wait and see how the draft goes, and if I do indeed do it I'll give an update or two.

Thanks again

Another problem is if you try this and your goalie gets blown up on at the start of the season, you may not be able to get to the top of the heap in any of those categories. Then you've basically written off the 18 you were planning on plus another 20 or so and that's just too much ground to make up.

If you want to finish top 5, it would almost certainly work. 1st place? Not likely. Get invited back to the league (assuming it's not a public league)? Almost certainly not.

You're taking a huge gamble. You're assuming that your goalie will do well that first week (or so). If he doesn't, then your strategy is screwed because it could take a large part of the season to get your GAA and Sv% to where you would need them to be. And what if your goalie gets injured after posting a 5.00+ GAA and sub-.800 Sv%? Then you have to hope that the rest of the league hasn't caught on and will actuall feel sympathetic. Personally, if you were in a league with me, I wouldn't trade you squat. I'd let you do what you could with your strategy with no help from me.

IMHO, it's just not worth it, nor does it seem like much fun. You're basing your whole season on a week's worth of luck. If it works out, you're practically guaranteed Top 5. If it doesn't, you're practically guaranteed last place. It's all or nothing and you're going to be pretty well handcuffed to do much about your situation throughout the year. Doesn't sound like the kind of position I'd want to be in going into the season.

And I won't even begin to go into the issue of playing the system instead of the game.
