0 Subject: Yahoo DL Spots

Remember, I am new to this whole Roto Hockey thing.

I have Kovalev who is out for a month. Why is he still listed as DTD? Shouldn't I be able to put him in the injured or DL spot or whatever it is?

Is Yahoo just slow in updating (a week slow?!) or do players only get the injured spot for more lengthy injuries?

Does your league have a DL slot? Look under League Settings to be sure. If you don't have a DL slot the player would not be listed as DL even if he's on the DL in real life.

Yeah I still have Alexei Zhamnov in there and want to switch them out so I don't have to drop anyone.

I believe that the NHL team has to put the player on the Injury Reserve list before Yahoo changes his status from DTD to IR.

That makes sense. It just baffles me that his team doesn't feel the need the put someone else in his spot for the next month.

Is that typically how hockey works? The injury reserve list isn't for the whole season like the NFL, right? Its more like the DL in baseball was my understanding.

From the Tampa Bay Lightning's web-site (my emphasis):

Injured Reserve List:
In the event that a player is injured and a Club wishes to place him on the Injured Reserve List, the Club must follow these procedures.

1. A Club may place a player on the injured reserve list if such player is injured, disabled or ill and unable to perform his duties as a hockey player after having passed the Club’s initial physical examination in that season.

2. A player who has an injury that renders him physically unable to play for a minimum of seven days after that date of the injury can be placed on the Club’s Injured Reserve List. Once a player is placed on the injured reserve, the Club may replace said player on its NHL roster with another player. All determinations that a player has suffered an injury warranting injured reserve status must be made by the Club’s medical staff and in accordance with the Club’s medical standards.

3. A player placed on Injured Reserve is ineligible to compete in NHL games for a period of not less than seven days from the date of injury.

4. Players on Injured Reserve may attend Club meetings and meals, travel with the Club and participate in practice sessions.

5. Players on Injured Reserve are prohibited from appearing in games, participating in pre-game warm-ups with their Clubs, or dressing in game uniforms on game days.

Awesome... so its kind of like the Disabled List in baseball. So why the heck are they just letting Kovalev take up a roster spot if the the initial diagnosis was about a month out? This is killing me.

I think it's because of the seven day period after he's placed on the list. Sometimes it's not clear that a guy will be out if an injury lingers. Hell, I'd put him on as soon as possible myself.

Teams have a maximum roster of 23 players, but only dress 20 players for each game. If the team already has 22 or 23 players on their roster they already have 2-3 players on the roster that are not playing So, if the team does not plan to call anyone up from the minors to replace the injured player, then it does not hurt to keep the injured player on the active roster. That way, the player is just one of the players on the roster that does not dress.

If the player is expected to be out for a month, I would have expected the team to put him on the "long-term IR" and get relief from the salary cap. Then again, I don't think that Montreal is that worried about the cap.

Great One,

Maybe you should send an e-mail to the Canadiens and let them know that you want Kovalev placed on the IR to help your Yahoo team.

No kidding. I am going to call someone up in the Montreal organization and straighten this mess out. :)

This is maddening... Kovalev is out a month and will be DTD - Gonchar out 3 games and he lands on the IR.
