Wow! Wasn't expecting this one.

Was traded for Brad Stuart, Marco Sturm, and Wayne Primeau.

Yep, Boston got owned.

Crap, this can't be good for my Oilers..

It's also not good for my smallworld team, just lost a game..

I'd veto this trade if I was in this league, but the entry fee was a bit too steep.

Seriously, though, I'm mystified why Boston makes this deal. The B's should have moved one of their goalies instead for some help. They got decent players back, but how often do you get a shot at someone like Joey T?

I'm sure if they had let in be known that Super Joe was available they could've landed more.

Sturm and Primeau are nothing special. Stuart is a great pickup, but not getting even a prospect or something tossed in is inexplicable. As if SJ would bat an eyelash at having to add a prospect in... Getting Joe would be worth an extra 2 prospects even.

One thing is for sure though, Joe's time in Boston was up. Reports were he had lost the dressing room and that there was no veteran presence on the team. Probably because none of the vets wanted to step on Joe's toes, seeing as how he was captain... but he's really not suited to being a captain. On team Canada he was far happier being just one of the guys.

Now that the NHL has a salary cap, a player with a $6.6M price tag is worth a lot less than what they would have been worth without a salary cap. Remember, not many teams have the cap room for Joe Thornton, less teams would need a player like him and even less teams would give up much for him. The Bruins really don't have any leverage here. Such a trade is most likely the best they can ever do.

My main concern is how many people simply look at the talent on paper without considering the salary cap issues, and whatever happens in the locker room. It's not that simple. I was watching my local sports channel and saw a poll that said that 76% of the voters thought that the Bruins got ripped off. To me, it's pretty fair. The Bruins do get about $1.5M of cap room to spend on some other players, or acquire some other big name player through another trade. Besides, the players that they got back aren't really that bad at all.

Very good point Left Wings, in todays Salary Cap world this is a huge issue. I was dissapointed that the Leafs didn't buy out both Sundin and Belfour for the very same reasons.

I think this can only help Boston in both short term and long term. I know most of you will argue with me, but today a team needs as much flexiblity on salary as they can get. 7m salary ties a teams hands.

I think Ottawa trading Hossa/Devries for Heatley was brilliant. Trading away 9.5m for 3.5m enables the Sens to sign future contracts. Teams have to do more of this.

Some good point have been brought up.

The main shocker to me was the supposeded non-auction of Thornton. You can't say they couldn't get a better deal elsewhere, if there was no attempt at trying.

As a Sharks fan, obviously I'm thrilled.

Rarely does the team trading the superstar end up with enough value - most often the team getting the stud wins out.

Good points about the cap and the effect on Thornton's value. I was berating the Sharks for not doing a damn thing while established snipers were signing for what seemed to be cheap.....but I'll forgive them now.

1 game in, and suddenly the trade looks a lot better.

Sturm with his first BOS goal about 20 seconds into his first shift, and his first BOS assist just 8 minutes later, with Stuart also picking up his first assist. This against arguably the hottest goalie in the league right now in Hasek.

And even more impressively... the team completely shuts down the most potent offence in the NHL... likely in part due to the work of defensive specialist Primeau.

I didn't see the game, but wow, I wouldn't have expected anything like this in the first game after the trade. Unbelievable.

I traded for Hasek today, so obviously this was fate kicking me in the Spezza.

I don't blame them for not auctioning Thornton. Words will get out, and the GM would be blasted by the media non-stop, which will also cause an uproar from the Bruins fans. If these things happen, it will only decrease Thornton's trade value.
