Is it just me, or does this have New York Islanders written all over it? This is way out there...
Rick DiPietro re-signed with the New York Islanders on Tuesday, agreeing to a record 15-year deal that will pay the No. 1 goalie $67.5 million.
The Islanders scheduled an afternoon news conference to officially announce the contract that would keep DiPietro in the fold until 2022, when he would be 40.

Sounds like an ex-NHL Goalie with no idea what he is doing as a GM is taking care of one of his own.
Nuts.

Number 1 goalie on the Islanders depth chart. He's a long way from being the #1 NHL goalie. A fishy deal if you ask me.

Crazy. Maybe DiPietro will turn into a star, and the Islanders will have a relative bargain on their hands at only ~4.5 mil a year. But what a silly risk to take. I guess they wont be drafting goalie prospects for a long while?

One commentator here suggested that this was the Islanders way of circumventing the cap by signing a player to a smaller dollar amount per year contract.
Spreading it out over the span of 15 years, when in actuality all parties realize the relationship won't last that long, helps give the Islanders cap relief at the beginning of the contract at the expense of having it hit the cap on the back end of the contract.
My thoughts? Still...What the heck are the Islanders thinking?!?!

only 8 goalies in the history of the nhl have played more than 18 seasons
huge gamble my my beloved isles
barilko ---the new cba divides the number of years of the contract by the total dollar value --so the isles will be charged 4.5 mil per season throughout entire term

re 8: Exactly. So his thought was instead of the Islanders having to pay him $8 million per year for 7 years or whatever, they lower the dollar amount to 4.5 million per year and extend the amount of years.
That way it counts as only 4.5 million against the cap per year instead of the higher number, but then averaged out for a much longer period of time to "pay DiPietro what he is worth".
He compared it to how the 49er's and Cowboys sacrificed future caproom for present caproom.
Not saying I agree with it, it was just his thoughts on an insane deal that made no other sense to him.

Primeau (6m/2yr) just retires and suddendly the Flyers find money to pay for Gagne.
If DiPietro retires before the end of the contract, I'm not sure his salary will be include in the salary cap.
Anyway the contract is still 14 years too long
