0 Subject: The All-star voting system is fine.

Why vote at all if there is only a short list of players who are "allowed" to play in that game?

Rory Fitzpatrick's little campaign was fun. It was everything about why the voting system is there. Who are you to deny who the fans want to see in the all-star game? It was disgusting to see all these hockey "insiders", from all the commentators on TV, to Wayne Gretzky to Don Cherry, who condemn the fans who participated in voting for Fitzpatrick.

It would have been cool to have a journeyman in the all-star game as a tribute to all those unheralded heroes who made it possible for the other all-stars to be the stars they are today. Without the cheap players, which team can afford the expensive stars? So really, all of the management people should appreciate the "lesser" players instead of treating them like dirt.

It is also disgusting to see all these sports channels who ask the audience to vote on who they think should have started in place of whoever got voted. The primary target is, of course, Ryan Miller, who got voted as the starter in place of Martin Brodeur, and Jonathan Cheechoo, who is looking really like a one-season wonder right now. This is a blatant disrespect to Miller and Cheechoo, the Buffalo Sabres and San Jose Sharks, as well as the NHL fans.

The voting system is in place for the sole reason of letting the fans vote in whoever wouldn't be in the game simply based on their stats.

Of course, the people have spoken, as it can be seen that there were these anti-Rory votes near the end of the campaign that caused him to lose the starting spot.

Rory Fitzpatrick might be a victim in the whole situation, but I really would like to see how things would have gone if he beat Niklas Lidstrom. We all know that Lidstrom would be part of the all-star team anyways. It would be interesting to see how Fitzpatrick would do in the all-star game.

Why vote for who you know will be chosen to fill up the rest of the team? It is obvious by the existence of the voting system that we're supposed to choose whoever wouldn't be in the game unless the people voted for them. I'm really tired of the media circulating the same names year after year, feeding us on who should or shouldn't be part of the all-star festivities. For example, they should be focusing on how Miller has led the Sabres to their awesome standings this season, instead of focusing on how Broduer got ripped off, as well as how Cheechoo's monster season last year should at least warrant one all-star appearance instead of how much he sucks right now.

Conflict and controversy sell. It makes for more interesting TV if they pit two players against each other than if they just praise both of them. Unfair to the guys like Miller and Cheechoo who deserve the respect, of course, but that's just the way entertainment works.

And yeah, I agree that Cheechoo's performance last year earned him a spot on the all star team this year, even if he's been a slow starter this year.

Agreed. I voted for Rory. Twice.

I think I found out the problem with the commentators. It's the fact that we're voting for the "starters", as if they really would get the most ice time. Sure, some of these players are there cuz they are more popular than those who have better stats. The media are now all over them for not deserving to be "starters". If we're just voting for a roster spot, which isn't any different from being a so-called starter, there may be less of an argument the media can make.

But then again, the NHL obviously wants the fans to feel more important and that they can make a difference. Now that the fans really do try to make a difference, we have all sorts of crying from the management and "insiders". They will be surprised to see how many non-fans have heard about the "Vote for Rory" campaign and how much publicity its website has created. They should be happy that Rory would get in, instead of condemning him.

"Rory Fitzpatrick does not belong in the All-star Game." That is one of the most repeated sentence on TV for the last few weeks.

In fact, the all-star game can be viewed like a VIP room in a Las Vegas casino. Which one of us ordinary people wouldn't want to see an ordinary guy to get a chance to get in there? Maybe we're just doing this to spite the rich people, but all this crying from them is making me think that we're doing the right thing.

So do they want the fans or not?

meh. I'm not sure why this has ruffled so many feathers on either side. Who really cares about the all star game, anyways?

Nobody did until the "Vote for Rory" campaign got its publicity. I wouldn't have voted if not for Rory.

You are not supposed to vote for the best players into the all star game. You are supposed to vote for the players you most want to see in the game. Though often there is a high correlation between the skilled players and who you want to see.
