If Toskala can do what Kipper did in Calgary I'll be very happy with this deal. The acquistion of Bell may indicate that the Leafs have no further interest in Jeff O'Neill.

I think this is a good move. I also think it sets up a deal to move one of their extra defensemen and possibly another forward.

Vokuon was just dealt to Florida for a package of draft picks. Will be interesting to see how this compares.

At least you don't have high expectations or anything! :)
Interesting that these guys are getting moved just for picks. Vokoun to Florida seems like a huge get for the Panthers.

At least the Sharks traded Toskala out of the Conference this time!
Sharks got some top flight talent in Round 1 today though. There are some doubts about Couture but he seems to be a top flight playmaker.......and Petrecki looks like a steal towards the end of Round 1. GO SHARKS!

J....! Great news for my NYR! Two excellent, speedy, heady offensive centers. Much depth there now with Nylander, Drury and Gomez. Sweet.

J, the Hockey transaction maven...thx.
Rangers coach Tom Renney confirmed that they will "turn the page" on Nylander and not sign him. I'll take the two we got, but Nylander was a joy to watch.

Petr Sykora --> PIT (2yrs/No terms disclosed) Darryl Sydor --> PIT (2yrs/5mil) Paul Kariya --> STL (3yrs/18mil) Ryan Smyth --> COL (5yrs/31.25mil) ouch!
Heard that Nylander was signing with the Oilers, but nothing official yet.

It sounds like the Rangers weren't expecting to get both. Not a huge problem, but I'm sure they had Nylander in their sights after signing ONE of the two they got.

I agree on the "ouch" for Ryan Smyth.
Apologies to my Canadian friends, but I just think he's a little overrated...
I'm a little sad to see Ouellet go being a Pens fan.

No Rogue, I read an article that the NYR had a 3 year $11M offer to Nylander on the table since March. He turned it down and never countered (of course, I don't know Nylander's side of the story). Sooo, they figured that Nylander wanted to test the market, and also thought they could get younger if they could get both Drury and Gomez. Still, they also said they were surprised that they got both centers, so I think if they would have only gotten Drury OR Gomez, they would have swallowed a little pride and called Nylander again with a higher offer. All in all, they did well getting two younger players who play more 2-way hockey and who have rings.

I think Ryan Smyth is one of those gritty but scoring type wingers that are hard to find these days. He's also clutch. He doesn't score 40+ goals every year, but he gets around 30-35 and he creates a lof of space for his fellow linemates. Crap like that.

5:36pm et The Chicago Blackhawks signed centre Robert Lang to a two-year contract. Don't know for how much, but, the Blackhawks????
5:13pm et The Montreal Canadiens signed defenceman Roman Hamrlik to a four-year contract worth $12 million. Is Sheldon Souray officially not coming back now? $3mil is actually not too bad for Hamrlik given the other recent d-men contracts (EDIT - I see another site shows the deal is 22mil, that would be NUTS)
4:51pm et The Washington Capitals signed centre Michael Nylander to a four-year contract worth $19.5 million. F'in Craps
12:36pm et The Vancouver Canucks have signed Lukas Krajicek to a two-year contract worth $2.2 milion.
11:57am et Forward Bates Battaglia has signed a two-year deal with Toronto worth $650,000 per season.
11:13am et The Nashville Predators have signed free-agent forward Jed Ortmeyer to a two-year contract worth $1.5-million. 750k per year seems like the first true bargain of the offseason

Yeap, that's nuts Hamrlik deal is 22M/4yr. But compare with all the signings, it looks like the market price.
Souray is not coming back, Habs offers the same money 22M/4yr and he reject it, I can't blame him but I won't miss him.
And I thought before yesterday that 3 or 4M/1Yr would be enought to sign Schneider or Kariya, was I disconnect with reality or what?

7:44pm et The Calgary Flames signed forward Owen Nolan to a one-year contract worth $1.75 million. He's still around???
7:10pm et The Anaheim Ducks have signed forward Todd Bertuzzi to a two-year contract worth $8 million. The best get better
6:08pm et The Nashville Predators have signed forward Radek Bonk and defenceman Greg de Vries to two-year contracts. Wooohoooo, deVries is gone from the Thrashers, he's AWFUL!!!!
Others: The Montreal Canadians have signed centre Bryan Smolinski to a one-year contract worth $2 million.
The Los Angeles Kings have signed Kyle Calder to a two-year contract worth $5.5 million.
The Los Angeles Kings have signed Ladislav Nagy to a one-year contract worth $3.75 million. Trade bait at the all star break, I'm surprised more cellar dweller teams don't do this
The Los Angeles Kings have signed Michal Handzus to a four-year contract worth $16 million.
The Minnesota Wild have signed Steve Kelly to a one-year contract.
The Atlanta Thrashers have signed D Ken Klee to a two-year contract worth $2.5 million.

Well Edmonton gets Penner for 4.5 million. Last year he made $450,000. Ducks get a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick for the young 20 goal scorer. Edmonton doesn't have to show up to next years draft so they'll save a bit a dough by cancelling that trip.
Overheard at the GM meetings. "Kevin Lowe, your table for one is ready".
I'd like to know how an Oiler fan feels about this deal.

Yeah, there is no way the Ducks even come close to this deal in my mind with Getzlaf and Perry coming up soon. They had a hard enough time getting Penner to play last year.
Lowe sure isn't making too many friends with his moves, but if I am Brian Burke, I send Lowe a bottle of wine and some cigars and say thanks for the picks!!!

how are these teams signing all these players to these huge $5million - $8million per year deals ? I thought they put in a salary cap after the last strike/lockout. seems like many of these contracts will be 15% - 20% of their total payroll for one player.
and why they are handing out 6 & 7 year contracts like halloween candy is also beyond me.

The contracts went up because the cap went up. The cap went up because league revenues went up. Thats all there is to it. Of course, just like in baseball, we may have seen the biggest deals we will in a while. There can only be so many 8 mil per year deals out there, in a cap world... But the market will adjust each year based on cap space and players available...

Pretty sure I read the cap barely passed the 50 mil mark. Last years was ~ 43-44 mil, so it rose a fair amount. Teams like Philly will be in rough shape to form their roster 2-3 years from now if the cap declines. Given that we have quite often seen a decline in attendance in all sports a few years after a big surge, it wouldn't be surprising...
In any case, I don't think that a team having 3 big contracts all earning 8.5 mil per year is necessarily a bad thing... IF that team has lots of young talent coming up to fill in the gaps with cheapo entry-level contracts, instead of the veteran who would earn ~ 1.5 mil for the same role. That said, Mr. Lowe has created quite the stir by going after those cheap, young players. How that will affect the GM game next year and the years that follow is anyone's guess.
