0 Subject: A little help with some hockey knowledge?

there was a point in my life when i was a big hockey fan. but after years of the Bruins breaking my heart, and then a move to NYC where Bruins coverage was minimal, i slowly lost touch.

to give you an idea of my current knowledge, the last game i remember watching was watching Ray Bourque win the Stanley Cup with Colorado, and yesterday I actually had to look up the reigning MVP, because i had NO idea who he was.

so, what's the deal? i may have a job interview next week that will need some NHL knowledge on my part - stars, championships, etc.

so - anyone got any good sites to go that will drop knowledge on me and so forth?

thanks!

its all about the big young stars right now... with the main two being Sidney Crosby in Pittsburgh, Alex Ovechkin in Washington... Sid is like Lebron.

Here is a summary of 10 MVP candidates for this year with a little bio. Preview

www.hockeydb.com the gospel of hockey stats for anyone who has ever played the game.
Not only NHL but minor leaguers, guys that never got drafted, even street hockey stats.

Click on the Other hockey pages link to get more sites..but these ones are the main sites I go to.

www.nhl.com
www.tsn.ca select the hockey section. Bob Mackenzie, Darren Dreger, James Duthie are very knowlegdeable.
www.sportsnet.ca
www.yahoo.com -- hockey
.nhl.com e.g. http://stars.nhl.com/

ps Mike Modano no longer plays for Dallas...
Good luck with the interview.

Thats all awesome info, but I don't think he's looking for info quite that in depth. More like, who has won the Cup recently, who are the biggest stars... and he wants to make sure he doesn't say he likes a team that has since moved to another city. More broad overview stuff I would think.

TV --- NHL has had a contract with VS network recently (game of the week on NBC). Which has really limited their visibility and hurt ratings vs when it was on ESPN.

Also, there are penalty shootouts so games don't end in ties anymore. I'm pretty sure you get 1 point for getting to OT, then another for winning it. Superfreak would need to confirm.

Following the lead of minor leagues, as of the 2005–06 season, the NHL ends exhibition and regular season games tied after the five minute overtime period by a shootout. Three skaters per team take shots on the opposing goalies, as opposed to the five in international and minor-league competition. The team with the most goals during their three shots is declared the winner. However, if the same number of goals are scored by both teams during the shootout, a sudden death shootout is begun, as in international competition. The teams alternate taking penalty shots, until one team scores and the other does not, thus producing a winner. All skaters (except goalies) on a team's roster must shoot before any player can shoot a second time. As of 2008, the NHL is considering a rules change that would outlaw the slapshot in shootouts, citing danger to goalies.
The shootout is not used in the playoffs for any North American league. Instead, 20 minute overtime periods are used until a single goal is scored.

Some background which might be helpful: The Dallas Stars used to be the Minnesota North Stars and they moved to Dallas in 1993. Previous to that, in 1978 the NHL allowed the North Stars and the old Cleveland Barons to merge (both were just dreadful teams), and in 1980 (or 1981, I forget) they actually got to the Cup finals as a result.
