Unbelievable how one ignorant individual can throw a cloud over a whole sport.

How does the actions of one ignorant individual throw a cloud over the whole sport?
There are ignorant individuals in any group of people.
Lets not get overly dramatic and make it a bigger issue than it is.

It is far better to bring this out and call this person out rather than try to sweep it under the rug. After all, if there is one thing we should do when faced with overt racism, it is to avoid being "overly dramatic," isn't it?

There is nothing to be gained by poo pooing this. Truth be told, hockey has a dearth of black players, and yet each of those players tells stories of having their race be used against them by fans and players. The truth is a lot more dramatic than anything we could manufacture. Crap like that needs to be called out, loudly and publicly. Bullies step in and gain confidence the more people decide to hush up about their actions.

Speaking from personal experience there, weykool? Way to stand up for the racist idiot, yeah, let's not get all dramatic, racism is not a big issue...

Only the truly ignorant would read into my post that I was standing up for the ignorant individual.
I have no problem with it being brought to light and exposed.
My problem is the attempt to broad brush all hockey fans with the same ignorant comments that you are trying to condemn.

Yeah, I didn't read Weykool's comment to be standing up for the racist idiot at all.

I agree, it was one stupid fan who went out of his way to make an ass of himself. It happens in all sports from time to time, and I wouldn't say it throws a black cloud over all of hockey because of it.

On the other hand, the developing story that the same player, Simmonds, may have thrown out a homophobic slur to Avery is much more blackening for me.

I categorically object to barliko6 weighting one as more objectionable than the other. That's short-sighted to weigh the "blackening" (couldn't you have used a different term here) of the two incidents. Both incidents are offensive to me and anyone else color blind and that disreguard choice of sexual partners material.

btw..Isn't Avery the player dumped by the Stars/suspended by league for referring to another NHL player dating his ex-girl friend with a "sloppy seconds" comment. Seems pretty clear a homophobic slur against Avery is unfounded, other than an(inappropriate) response to Avery's style of play (ultimate grinder). Just as clear, Simmonds is black. If I had to (gun at the back of my head) rate offensiveness, homophobic slur aimed at Avery is distant second given the circumstances.

Whether or not either remark (racial or homophobic) throws cloud over sport of hockey is irrelevant. All statements or acts using such terms/meanings need to be held prominently in the day light as examples of unacceptable speach in any setting, anywhere..anytime. Can only be accomplished if we do so. Kudos to PD for the post and ALL who posted in this thread.

Avery is a dick who excels in getting people to lash out at him. It is part of his game. Simmons is black.

Not even close.

RE: 6

I think for an idiot fan out of the crowd to do what he did is less objectional than a player in this instance doing what he did. It has nothing to do with which slur might be more or less objectional, and more so who was using the slur.

As an employer, if one of my employees utters a inappropriate slur, I would definitely consider it more of an issue than if one of my customers came in and did the same.

I share your misfortune as being an employer.

I do see your point about my employee verses a customer. However, for me, I've drawn a line in the dirt. No matter if slur emanates from employee or customer, I would readily fire/terminate either. Guess I'm too old to be economically bribed to ignore blatant racial/homophobic/offensive comments and/or actions. And that makes me at least conflicted, if not stupid, as I am a loud mouthed proponent of the broadest interpretation of 1st amendment freedom of speach.
